C. Phillips Published by the Senior June 1957 .-T - ru X’cnpo cnor This year we are saying farewell to three of our old-timers to whom this book is dedicated. They will be missed and very difficult to replace. Mrs. Jackson, who retired last Septennber 30, has been here since 1924. Through the years she has taught algebra, history, and English besides her specialty com¬ mercial subjects. She has seen many changes at Wash¬ ington and made many friends. Mrs. Jackson received her training at Ohio State and studied at the Gregg (Shorthand) School in Chicago. Jacksie” will be missed by her numerous friends. The third teacher to retire this year is our industrial arts man. Bill Mette, who came to Washington High in 1927. He is a product of the San Jose school system, including the State College. He has also done some graduate work at the University of Oregon. Mr. Mette is especially adept at build¬ ing stage scenery for plays and making repairs on almost any type of school equip- V ' ment that breaks down. When he retires, he intends to catch up on his fishing and Vunting and traveling. For_ : xation, he plans to do silver smithing and lapidary Work. It wilMbAn; r without Bill Mette. f fny DEDICATION Mr. Kibby has been a member of the W. U. H. S. faculty since 1920, teaching printing, mechanical drawing, woodshop, and P. E. He received his training at Santa Barbara State. He has coached football, baseball, and track; and will best be remembered by the old-timers for his football teams from 1920 to 1924. With only 15 members on the squad his team crushed such opponents as Piedmont and Hayward. Mr. Kibby has been associated with the Hatchet and Washingtonian for thirty-six years. We will miss him. E. M. GRIMMER. JR. Aj xX 5 : Board of Trustees ml V- ■■ ' m ' J. L. BERCHEM c)cX J. V. GOOLD District Superintendent This 1957 year book is dedicated rightfully to those faculty mem¬ bers who have spent the best years of their lives in the guidance and teaching of the future citizens of this great democracy. They retire with the knowledge that their work will be continued by those of us who because of their friendship and counsel are better equipped to carry on. It is my sincere hope that their retirement will be an enjoyable experience after many years of school work. — POP FACULTY MISS ABBOTT ALAMEDA MR. ARMSTRONG MISS BERNEY MR. BERRY MR. BORUCK MR. CROSS-COUNTRY The cross country teams were very successful this year. The Frosh-Soph team took the SCVAL championship and the Junior Varsity took second place. All of the meets except one took place at the Stanford University Golf Course. The possibility for a strong championship varsity next year looks very good, with a strong experienced group that for the most part has three years of eligibility remaining. Outstanding runners this year were Joe Lucero, Captain of the Frosh-Soph team, Larry Danner, Bill Mickies, Al Espinoza, and Sixto Gonzales. The spark plugs of the J. V. team were Rich Luevano, Captain, and Rich Standal. BOYS ' W CLUB First Row: N. Kurotori, R. Masuda, L. Jenkins, M. Paler, S. Rebello, E. Santos, T. Louie, J. Monte de Rey, L. Tacang, T.
