J. V. Goold, District Superintendent DEDICATION To our beloved Pop , to whom we shall always be in¬ debted for these last four wonderful years, we are dedi¬ cating this book. We sincerely hope that this gesture will be tangible evidence of our friendship and esteem. On behalf of the graduating class, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Our Pop . BOARD OF TRUSTEES The picture above shows our Board of Trustees scanning the plans for Washington High ' s new building program. Our rapidly increasing enrollment brought about by a rapidly growing community has necessitated the erection of more classrooms starting this year. This was made possible by the passage last fall of the $1,500,000 bond issue by the voters of the township. Besides classrooms for academic subjects, the plans call for a new art building, ag building, home-making, girls ' gym and swimming pool. Watching over this gigantic project and guiding it to completion will be our respected and vigilant Board of Trustees. In the picture they are (left to right): E. A. Quaresma, S. S. Scott, M. J. State Convention. LeRoy Brown at¬ tended the National Convention in Kansas City, Mo. Jim Coelho and LeRoy Brown made State Farm¬ ers, the highest F. F. A. award in the state. James Murphy won the Sectional Co-operative Quiz. The boys ran a booth at the P. T. A. Carnival. VARSITY FOOTBALL Johnnie Chacon At the start of the 1952 football season the Washington Hus¬ kies were not expected to win many games in league competi¬ tion. However, Washington started its league play by defeat¬ ing the supposed top team, James Lick by seven points. After this, due to injuries, six men were lost from the varsity. They were: Ed King, Allen Oik, Jimmy Bolivia, Frank Murakami, Ernie Delgado and Carl Von Euw. Although Washington came out on the short end of the win¬ ning list, the team, through the leadership of Coach Taylor and Coach Voorhees, and the playing of men like Chacon and rightfully proud. B FOOTBALL As Is usual every year, Coach Hird has had to work wi+h a lot of green material in order to shape up a good team. Washington had a good team this year. It was not a championship team, losing two games, but it was a better than average squad. Much of the success of our Puppies can be attributed to Coach Hird, who has developed a disorganized group of boys into a powerful athletic unit. Elected for the season as co-captains were Ed Fletcher and Russell Hayes. Hayes, Delao, Coach Hird, Fle+cher, Velarde, Coach Oliver Leach, Mendoza, Hayes, Chitwood w. 49.... Our team was the only one to beat the Campbell squad that wound up on top but that honor gave the boys little consolation. Galvan, Rigmaiden, Nieves and Bolivia will be difficult to replace. Rigmaiden was voted captain and most valuable player. Coming up next year will be Santos, Oik, Flatt, Orozco, Meyer, and Dickerson along with some help from the B squad. B BASKETBALL Coach Don Wolfe ' s Puppy basketball ers had an average season win¬ ning 13 and losing 12. In league play they managed to win four out of seven. As in previous years the puppies lost crucial league games by narrow margins, one of them in an overtime. There were no outstanding stars but a well-rounded squad with excel¬ lent team work. Viscarra was high point man for the season, scoring 100 points in league games. Other league leading scorers for the Washington C ' s were Don Martin 40 points, and Willie Galan 45 points. Other players who saw plenty of action were: Ben Lopez, Ed Meneze and John Perez. The past experience of these boys proved to be the deciding factor in all league games. Although our class A cindermen have a handful of individual stars, they haven ' t been able to come through on a team scoring basis. A lack of depth in the team has been its main hindrance this past year. Washington has always been assured of af least three first places through the abilities of their combination hurdler and broad- jumper, Ralph McElroy. Also heavy on scoring is Washington ' s ace high-jumper, An¬ toine Rigmaiden. Two thinclads that added much to Washington ' s score were: Jim Cartwright, pole vaulter and Walter Luiz, in the 440. What little success that Washington did attain this year was partially due to the efforts of our track coach, Judson Taylor, assisted by Mr. Crawford and Mr. Osborne. Cameron, J. Mahusay, T. Rangel, A. Rodriguez. B TRACK The deadline posted for this story makes it impossible to present an overall picture of this year ' s track season; however, the outstanding performers to date have been: Danny Davis in the sprints; Don Cameron in the pole vault; Chuck Bennet in the 440; and Art Anchundo and Albert Rodrigues in the high and low hurdles. Other point winners who have shown a lot of hustle have been: Dave Alexander in the high jump; Ray Ruiz in the high jump and broad jump; and a potential 880 man, Ernest Duarte. Managers: Pineda, Hernandez, Paul, Dawson. Benneff Davis D. Cameron A. Anchundo C TRACK Top Row: K. Ornellas, J. Sanford, H. Esquibel, J. Dias. Fronf Row: R. Willis, P. Moskito, G. Mahusay, J. Gualco, E. Soto. Our C and D boys have nof been too strong in dual competition but ther are some up-and-coming performers who show considerable promise. Those who have done well so far are Dias, Soto and Meneze in the sprints, Sanford in the discus, and Mahusay in the high jump. Soto and Meneze also run the hurdles. In the D” division are four boys who always turn in a good performance. They are John Adams in the discus and shot, Moffat in the hurdles. Arias in the sprints, and Avila in the pole vault. We will hear more from these boys in the future. D TRACK Top Row: J. Adams, D. Banuelos, D. Moffat, D. Arias. Front Row: G. Biddlecome, M. Avia, B. Morales. Leading batters are catcher John Chacon, Dick Arington, who has developed into one of the best in¬ fielders in the league, and Ed Romero, an outfielder who is also used as a pitcher. Other potent hitters include Tony Neives, who most people say is the best first base- man in the league, Ed King, the long ball hitting outfielder, Frank Murakami, the little third baeman with a knack for getting on base, and Bob Lunsford who is also the ace pitcher. Also ready and willing to hurl a good game are Allen Oik, Bob Hird, Ray Ruiz, and Ed Romero. Prospects for next year look fairly good at the present. Don Santos, Allen Oik, Bob Hird, Frank Velarde, Ray Ruiz, LeRoy DeSalles, Gordon Stefans and Dan Rodarte will be back, but it will be hard to fill the gaps left by such stalwarts as Arington, Chacon, King, Nieves, Lunsford, and Murakami, who are graduating. Coach Hird started out the season with almost a full squad of lettermen. Since this book goes to press before the season is over we are unable to give final scores. How¬ ever, it has been a good season and the morale is high. This is Coach Hird ' s final team as he is retiring from coaching to become full-time vice-principal. Good luck, Coach, in your new job. The hitting and pitching were excellent and morale was high. We could boast some of the league ' s top hitters. Coach Wallace was doing well in his first year as baseball mentor and showed promise of having an outstanding season. Some members of this squad will move up to the varsity next year.
