In this year of 1949 the staff commemorates the one- hundredth anniversary of the gold rush to this golden state of California. One hundred years ago many brave people with the adventurous spirit left their homes to endure the hardships of a hazardous journey across the continent in one of the greatest migrations of all time. It is to these hardy people who endured the cold of winter and heat of summer; these people who crossed high mountains, plains and deserts; these people who en¬ dured untold hardships—it is to these people we dedicate this book. 4

BOARD OF TRUSTEES The students of Washington Union High School want to thank the Board of Trustees for their wonderful work during the past school year. They work unselfishly for all of us, having only our welfare in mind. This year is over, and it is fitting that we extend our thanks to a board that has given so willingly of its time.
