I his book belongs to: The WASHINGTONIAN Published by the Senior Class Washington Union High School Centerville, California June, 1949 I In this year of 1949 the staff commemorates the one- hundredth anniversary of the gold rush to this golden state of California. One hundred years ago many brave people with the adventurous spirit left their homes to endure the hardships of a hazardous journey across the continent in one of the greatest migrations of all time. It is to these hardy people who endured the cold of winter and heat of summer; these people who crossed high mountains, plains and deserts; these people who en¬ dured untold hardships—it is to these people we dedicate this book. 4 CONTENTS Trustees. . . . 6 Mixed Glee. . . . 37 Administration .... . . . 7 Hatchet. . . . 38 Faculty. . . . 8-9 Rally Committee . . . 38 Student Council . . . 10 Senior Play. . . . 39 Senior Officers .... ...II Einstein Club .... . . . 40 Seniors. . . . 12-17 Custodians. . . . 40 Junior Class . . . . . . . . 18-19 Varsity Football . . . , . . . 44-45 Sophomore Class . . . . 20-21 130 Football. . . . 46 Freshman Class .... . . . 22-23 130 Basketball .... . . . 47 C.S.F. ... 11 Varsity Basketball . . . , . . . 48-49 Girls ' League .... ... 11 C and D Basketball . . . 50 Girls ' W . . . . 28 C and D Track . . . . , . . . 51 Boys ' W . . . . 28 Varsity Baseball . . . . . . 52-53 Stage Crew. . . . 29 Varsity Track. . . . 54 Beaker Busters .... . . . 29 1 30 Track. . . . 55 Washingtonian .... . . . 30 Boxing. , . . 56-57 Christmas Pageant . . . 31 Snaps . . . . 58 Vodvil. Coached by Jud Taylor and Clyde Voorhees the squad had an unforgettable season. Two of the never-to-be-forgotten nights were November 12 when we beat unbeaten Santa Clara 14 to 7 and November 19 when we triumphed over Campbell 19 to 0. The same evening Los Gatos was holding Santa Clara to a tie to give Washington the championship. Following the Campbell game many players hung up their cleats for the last time. These included three All-Valley men: Joe Sankene, Fred Duffie and Bernie Day. Others were ends Morris. Orozco. Auchard, Bishop and Evans; tackles Brazil and Lizardo; Guards Bet¬ tencourt, Herring, Gunn and Hashimoto; Center Gaunt, Quarter¬ back Kious, Halfbacks Recend, Durazo, Ayala and Brownlee; Full¬ backs Goularte and Lewis. Returning veterans for the next year will include AII-S.C.V.A.L. center Ed Gurley, Alvarado, Funk, Pine, Runolfson, Richards, Briar, Bribes, Francis, Griffin, Meeker and Silveira. Congratulations to Co-Captains Sankene and Goularte. 44 130 FOOTBALL SCORES Washington 0. .Campbell 12 Washington 6. .Santa Clara 7 Washington 0. Washington 12. Washington 19. Washington 0. A great deal of credit must go to Coach Hird for developing from green material, a hard-hitting, powerful team. Beset with injuries, the light¬ weights still won half of their games. Fullback K lendes was lost early in the season due to illness. He was replaced by Pagan who missed the final game with an ankle injury. Robertson saw many games from the bench with an arm in a sling. Three seniors on the squad. Captain R. E. Miller, Lanao Moga and Yukio Hisaoka will leave three vacancies very hard to fill. Those lettermen who will probably move up to the varsity squad next year are: Bettencourt, Guerra, Mendoza, Garcia, Saguindel, Salvador, Hernandez, Robertson, Zeisse, El ' izarrey, Mendez and Pagan. Others who should have another year on the lightweight squad are: Nieves, Seno, Berney, Botelho, Furtado, Rodriguez, Duarte, Miyasaki, Orrochi, Balcita, Sausedo, Ferraris and De la Torre. TOP ROW: B. Captained by Pete Morlos, our B ' s of ' 49, the hard luck team of the league, lost four of their games in overtime or by a margin of five points or less. Coach Wolfe in his first year here at Washington felt the Lightweights had turned a record well worth the time, effort, and court-pacing he put into training and coaching them. Three 49 ' ers, Pat Pachote, Jess Corrales, and Morlos, hung up their suits for the last time. Seven letter men will be returning to the court next winter. Bob Hernandez, Ralph Juhl, Albert Castillo, Armando Morlos, Ken Evans, Henry Ruelas, and Ernie Rodrigues. They will probably all move up to the varsity. 47 TOP ROW: R. Lof+en, R. Preciado. W. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Washington Huskies started out the season with a bang, winning their first four league games. They were tied for first place with San Jose Tech. Then in their fifth league encounter they lost to Campbell. This was the beginning of a losing streak. The team finished with five wins and three losses. Coach Voorhees ' quintet was the only team in the S. C. V. A. L. to defeat Fremont, the team which later won the championship. The captain for the season was Gene Bramwell, who was injured midway in iUe season. The outstanding Husky was Joe Sankene, all S. C. V. A. L. guard, high scorer on the squad. Graduating will be Bramwell, F. Vargas, Sankene, Pereira, Ramsey, Martinez, Evans, Nelson, Kous and Hashimoto. Returning next season will be George Silveira and M. As this book goes to press, the 1949 version of the Huskle steam¬ roller Is on a winning streak of six games. Starting with a brand new team this season Coach HIrd has built one of the strongest teams In the league. The only returning veterans were Gene Bramwell, ace pitcher, and Vern Machado at shortstop. Two freshmen on this year ' s squad are George Pagan behind the plate and Sabe Ellzarrey, pitcher. Others on the team are Pat Francis, first base; Berrios at second; Leal and Bettencourt alternate at third base. The field Is taken care of by Cicairos, Salvador and Garcia. Relief players are Juhl, Bachelder, Pereira, Rego and Vargas. This whole outfit will be back next year except Bramwell and Pereira who are graduating. So watch out for the Huskies next year. 52 A TRACK SITTING: R. Ayala, J. Borge, E. Elizarrey, J. Navarro, O. Robertson, R. Martin. KNEELING: T. Hashl- moto, J. Herring, J. Gaunt, J. Evans, J.
