TONiAN Volume Twenty-six Published by the Senior Class Washington Union High School Centerville, California IN MEMORIAM In memory of our beloved classmates and friends. Donald Joseph Howe, Class of 1948 Richard Norman Rego, Class of 1950 Each year the Washingtonian brings to mind happy memories of wonderful high school days, teams and games, study and fun, pageants, vodvils, assemblies, classes and friendships — all vital spokes in the whirling wheel of high school life that spins along the well-worn and familiar path of education. Since this Washingtonian will be in years to come a lasting remembrance of and a tribute to your days at Washington High, we, the class of ' 48 , designed a yearbook which gives a realistic picture of the school year through photos and write-ups and has artistic relief through cartoons and still-lifes based on an Oriental theme. This Washingtonian was designed for you, and the staff presents it with the sincere hope that it will bring you as much pleasure and pride as it brought us in creating it. They are behind the students In worthwhile projects and lend support to student activities. It Is regrettable that there have been changes In the board this school year. On November 4 Edward E. Enos resigned, creating a vacancy wh ' ch was subsequently filled by the appoint¬ ment of Joseph D. Gomes to the board. The community was shocked to learn of the death of Mr. Somes on Feb. 27. Again there was a vacancy to be filled. County Superintendent Vaughn Seidel then appointed E. A. Quaresma, Justice of the Peace In Niles, who Is very capable and cIvIc-mInded. We are pleased with our newest member of the board. OUR POP Many hundreds have passed through Washington ' s halls since Mr. Goold became principal, in 1942, but none have realized more fully than the class of ' 48 what a true friend he has been to each one of us. Each year, through the four that we have spent here we have grown in our respect and admiration for Pop . His genuine interest in student activities, and his personal interest in each individual has helped to make us feel that he is our friend and always will be. We are happy to have been members of Pop ' s family. Among memories of our years at Washington will be our relationship with Pop and the constant good-will he helped create. We are proud to call Mr. Goold. Our Pop . W. E. GRAVESTOCK Ending a wonderful and successful year, we of the Student Body, as well as the faculty and the adnninistration, extend our thanks to Mr. Gravestock. As Vice-Principal he has done his duties well by managing the admission to our foot¬ ball games, kept order about the campus during the noon hour, helped with our mar¬ velous assemblies and countless other ac¬ tivities. The Students of Evening School also thank Mr. Gravestock for being a fine Principal to them. He has helped all those with large and small problems. Many will return and find him at his work next fall. The time has come for all of us to leave a wonderful school year. Again we thank you, Mr. Gravestock. Mrs. Evelyn Rose and Miss Dorothy Enos are two important members of the faculty who serve both teachers and students. Mrs. Rose, better known to us as Brownie , does her secretarial work in Room I while Doro¬ thy Enos is Registrar in Room 3. At one time or another every one of us has called upon these kind friends for help and information, and it seems that no matter how busy they might be, answering telephones, writing tardy slips, and issuing new locker keys to students who often mislay theirs, they al¬ ways try to answer our questions. Through¬ out the school year they are asked by teach¬ ers when they will receive their orders of books and other supplies or if the film they have sent for has arrived. Students ask about getting bids for dances, when the next holi¬ day is, if a certain fountain pen has been turned in, and of course the Juniors wonder when their rings will come and Seniors anx¬ iously await their pictures, constantly in¬ quiring about them. On behalf of the faculty and students of Washington High the Wash¬ ingtonian Staff wishes to express its appreci¬ ation for your help and kindness— Brownie and Dorothy. D. ENOS E. ROSE GRACE I. KNOLES IRVING HIRD Counsellor of Girls Counsellor of Boys OUR DEANS This year ' s Washingtonian pays tribute to two especially important members of the faculty — the Counsellor of Girls and Counsellor of Boys. A counsellors office is a place where students feel free to discuss personal matters with people who are qualified to listen and discuss. This gives the students a chance to talk things over. For the past four years the counsellors have been Miss Knoles and Mr. Hird who have done an admirable job in helping to unburden students with weighty problems. These two merit the praise of the entire student body and hundreds of alumni. The Washingtonian staff commends our counsellors and hope they will continue their work for many years to come. Mrs. Nunes and Mrs. Gardetto do a fine job of taking care of the Girls ' Gym. Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Lewis prepare delicious lunches. Mr. Alfred Andrade and Mr. Joe Dutra keep our class rooms and halls clean. George Santos is doing a wonderful job in keeping the lawn and garden at¬ tractive, while Antone Andrade, who has previously done their work, is on leave of absence in Portugal. When Mr. Andrade returns he will be back on the job. Mr. Marks, Mr. Sylva and Mr. Faria drive our school buses. Mr. De Valle, our night watchman, also deserves special mention for a job well done. K. WASHINGTONIAN This year ' s Washingtonian is as different as is the Oriental Theme the staff has chosen. To get an early start on the book the editor was elected while still a junior. Before school had ended the editor had chosen her staff and made a fair start on planning the book. During the summer staff meetings were held so valuable time would not be lost. When school opened almost all of the details of the book were completely worked out. This year ' s editor, Diana Crossman, chose Myra Burnsed and Bob De Salles as Associate Editors. Mary Burnsed was chief-typist. Joan Berney created the cartoons for the separation pages, and Barbara Jibson did the lettering and designed the cover. Al Kiep was chief-photographer assisted by Paul Vallerga and Bob Wasley. For the first time two juniors were placed on the staff in the hope that they will be valuable members of the staff when they become seniors. The staff hopes to preserve many old school memories for you in this book. BACK ROW: K. Kawag uchi, J. Moora, R. Halliday, I. Alameda, D. Leask, A. Kelp, Mr. Phillips. MUSIC FRONT: Mrs. Thornburg, B. The Boys ' W Club got off to a boom this year as they won the contest of selling student body cards over the Girls ' W Club. This was the first time in four years that the Boys ' W Club won. They were awarded a pot luck dinner with enjoyable entertainment from the losers. Instead of having a dance this year, the club sponsored a basketball game between the Washington Alumni and a professional girls team, The American Redheads. They also had two initiations for the new members. To round out the year ' s activities a picnic was enjoyed by all the members. A rule was set up this year for the wearing of the Block sweaters. The members were required to wear their sweaters every Wednesday. If this was not obeyed, a small fine was put on the violator. This year the club was under the able leadership of Ruben Rodriguez, President; Roger Halliday, Vice-president; Joe Sankene, Secretary-Treasurer; and Phil Enciso and Dan Goularte, Sergeants at Arts. They are required to earn 700 points to be eligible for membership. During the 1947 Hockey season the girls had two enjoyable trips to Stanford where they learned playing techniques and competed against other schools. They were also hostesses to other high schools and colleges at a Hockey Play Day. The initiation was held in the form of a slumber party In the high school gym. One of the projects underway is the redecoration of the W Club room. All members are doing their part and are anxious to view the results. The officers for the year were President, Laverne Harvey; Vice-president, Mary Senn; Secretary, Shirley Butler; Treasurer, Pauline Nickas, and Ways and Means Chair¬ man, Dorothy Shanks. Mrs. Nelson and Miss MozzettI were helpful advisors. SHIRLEY BUTLER. Secretary MARY SENN, Vice-President LaVERNE HARVEY, President DOROTHY SHANKS. Chairman of Ways and Means LORRAINE ROSE. WASHINGTON HUSKIES The 1947 football squad, playing all of their home games under the lights of the Memorial Stadium, finished the season in fourth place in the S.C.V.A.L. league. But that doesn ' t even begin to tell the story; for had it not been for a couple of conversion points in the wrong places the Huskies could have been at the top of the league. Phil Enciso, one of the greatest linemen in the history of W.U.H.S., and Ruben Rodriguez, a triple threat fullback, were the Huskies co-captains and both took first- string positions on the AII-S.C.V.A.L. team. Eight other senior lettermen have played their last games for Washington. They are: Irving Alameda, Gerry Morley, Roger Halliday, Joe Salvador, Art Hughes, Jerry Nunes, Don Andrade and Clifford Fields. Returning lettermen include Alex Morris, Gilbert Orozco, Don Pine, Fred Duffie, Ed Gurley, Jack Gaunt, Dan Goularte, Jim Herring, Bob Lizardo, Les Kious, Albert Durazo, Joe Sankene, John Recend and Mel Lewis. The squad loses most of the experienced players for next year by graduation and promotion to the varsity. Those graduating are Rose, Parry, Mohn, Brown, Fernan¬ dez, Zendejas and Peixoto. Those probably moving up to varsity will be Elizarrey, Brownlee, Hashimoto, Bettencourt, Runolfson, Alvarado, Guerra. Silveira, Richards, Hernandez and Mendez. The Washington High Huskies had quite a luckless year as they won only three of their eight league games. This places them pretty low in the league standings. With the fine and able coaching of Clyde Voorehees and the wonderful teamwork the boys gave their opponents stiff competition often losing only by three to five points and winning by wide margins. Lost through graduation will be Ruben Rodriguez, Irving Alameda. Lawrence Fernandez, Salvador Galvan, and Philip Enciso. The Washington Hi ”l30 ' s finished one of the worst seasons wiih only one win out of eight games which also put them in the cellar of the SCVAL league. Coach Jud Taylor will be looking for¬ ward to next year with most of the team returning. Marvin Peixoto and Tamotsu Nishioka will be the only ones lost through graduation. BASEBALL The Washington Huskies, defending co-champions of the S. C. V. A. L., are off to what seems to be another successful year. Al¬ though Coach Irv Hird lost six of his valuable players through graduation, it seems that there are many good prospects to fill in. The five returning lettermen on the squad were Joe Salvador, the slugging centerfielder; Lawrence Fernandez, a smooth working third baseman; Alvin Silva, long ball hitting left-fielder; Vernon Machado, the pint-sized shortstop flash; and Irving Alameda, who carried the brunt of the pitching duties for the Huskies. Up from last year ' s reserves were Phil Enciso, who developed into a swell catcher and hitter; Henry Serbantes, a sophomore who looks like a second base prospect; Marvin Peixoto, who held down the first base spot satisfactorily; Don Andrade, a reconverted in- fielder who proved himself in right field; and Gene Bramwell, the curve-bail artist who shared the mound chores with Alameda. Lost through graduation this year will be Ph ' l Enciso, Joe Salva¬ dor, Irving Alameda, Marvin Peixoto, Lawrence Fernandez, Alvin Silva, and Don Andrade. FRONT ROW: A. Costa, D. Elizarrey, D.
