The team, led by Pat Ryan's 19 points, hit 39 per cent from the field. Larry Johnson, hitting 13 markers himself, played probably the best de- fensive game of his career by holding big 6'4 Harold johnson down to 12 points. Harold Johnson had previously been rated as one of the five hundred best high school ball players in the United States by Sport maga- zine. Lothrop, who contributed 16 points, along with newcomer Wayne Ekren played fine all around aggressive ball. The team won over Emmets- burg 57-45. ' Although losing the Storm Lake game 54-52, Cherokee played medi- ocre to good ball. The points were fairly well distributed between Wayne Ekren, Pat Ryan, Al Lothrop, and Larry Johnson getting 16, 14, 10, and 6 respectively. Wayne Ekren rallied for the Braves in all around play. Poor defense and free throw shooting hindered the Braves. In the Spirit Lake game qs 4-44, Cherokee's favorj , Dick Sagness saw his first real action when he replaced Pat Ryan who fouled out with 7 minutes to go after hitting 10 points. Dick dumped in 7 points in the latter minutes along with showing cool floor play. Lathrop led the scor- ers with 15 and was followed closely by Wayne Ekren with 12. Larry Johnson played fine defensive work along with hitting 7 points. Losing another close game to Storm Lake C47-463 was probably the hardest defeat to take all year. The Braves tied the game up after con- quering an 11 point deficit at half time, but to no avail. Lothrop led the scorers with 19, 15 coming in the 2nd half. Johnson and Ekren played their general good floor game. Spencer handed the Braves their worst defeat of the season, a 5 3 to 37 slaughter at Spencer. No one on the Cherokee team could stop the scoring of the sharp shooting Spencer line. Coach Luther and some of the members of the basketball team are giving serious con- sideration to their task of the evening as portrayed by this banner prepared by members of the Art Service Club - tear down their teepee - upset Spirit Lakes' chances of winning the game tonight.

BASKETBALL GAMES Cherokee opened up the season with a Win over Orange City 38 to 36. Al Lothrop was high point man with 13 points. Chuck Stiles hit the win- ning basket with 7 seconds before the final gun. The Braves started out on the right foot in the Lakes Conference by downing Estherville 61 to 44. Pat Ryan swished 22 points for high honors. Tough Paullina, Sioux Valley champs, used a stubborn defense and good rebounding to drop the Braves S1 to 44. Ryan scored 10 points for the Cherokee cause. The Braves avenged an earlier football defeat by Sibley as they journ- eyed there to paste the Generals 52 to 36. Lothrop with 15 received high point honors. ...57..

Sheldon's invasion of Brave territory ended in a 51-43 defeat for the plucky Orabs. Chuck Peterson looked outstanding as he hawked this year's record of 17 rebounds for the Braves. 5 Sibley again tasted defeat at the hands of the Braves when they journeyed to Cherokee. As the final gun sounded, Sibley found themselves on the short end of the 54 to 40 score. Ryan again was Cherokee's ace in the hole. Emmetsburg was the host to Cherokee for the second game which was nip and tuck all the way. The Braves were only slightly domineering, but the end of the game found the En Hawks trailing by a 45 to 42 score. Dick Sagness, Pat Ryan and Al Lothrop looked outstanding for the Braves. In the 2nd game with Spirit Lake, Cherokee took a beating. The Braves got off to a good start, and it looked as if this was an easy one. But cold shooting and draggy rebounding in the second half cost the boys the game for they went down to defeat 49-41. Cherokee gave a fine demonstration of ball handling skill to knock the plucky Spencer Tigers off by a score of 69 to 58. The Braves were led in victory by Ryan, Johnson, and Lothrop, the mainstays of the night. The Sheldon Orabs couldn't hold the Braves down in the first quarter and it ended with the Braves 14-3. Trying to get the situation in hand, Sheldon came out the second quarter with a full court press. This was where the Braves met their doom as they were defeated 51-46. The Braves got off to a poor start in their second game with Estherville and just couldn't seem to get going. Estherville, on the other hand, seemed to have lady luck on their side. Even though versatile Pat Ryan played outstanding ball he couldn,t do it alone and Cherokee went down to defeat 54-49.
