The History of Cherokee High Schools Washingtoii High School is the third high school to be built in Chero- kee. Preceding it was the Lincoln building which was opened in 1895 and served the high school classes until 1916 when the Wilson High School building was completed. The new structure which is located at the intersection of Sixth and Bluff Streets was begun in the summer of 1952. The area where the new school is located covers approximately twenty-five acres. The building faces south with adequate parking and playground areas surrounding it to coincide with the future plans of expansion. The building is designed with the plan in mind that the gymnasium will be built on the west and an auditorium and additional classrooms on the north and east. The building is 300 feet long and has 26,850 square feet of floor space. Included in its interior are nine classrooms, a library-study hall, and phy- sical education room. In addition there are two teacher rest rooms and lounges, a general office, one book room, one principal's private office, and two counselor rooms. The homemaking unit and science room are two of the most outstanding features of the new building. Another feature within the school is the library-study hall combina- tion which not only provides all the books and reference material to a large number of students at a time, but also contains a stage which serves as a recreational reading area. The building was officially opened at a dedication ceremony which was held on October 15, 19 5 3. The American Legion and VFW Auxiliary had charge of the dedication of the flags and flag pole at 3 :00 p.m. Senator Guy M. Gillette was the guest speaker at the presentation service at 8:00 p.m. in the gym of the new building. .-4..

FLAGS PRESENTED T0 WASHINGTON HIGH In a very impressive ceremony two flags were presented on dedication day to our new school. In the top picture Mr. Archie R. Nelson, on behalf of the American Legion, presented a flag to XVashington High School. This flag at one time had flown over the U. S. Senate building in Washingtoii, D. C. and had been obtained by U. S. Senator Guy M. Gillette for his home town, for he too is a Cherokee High School graduate. High School Principal M. O. Moe accepted the flag for the school. Mr. Earl Hobbs, assisted by members of the school band, raised the flag to the top of the new pole and this flag became the first to fly over Wfashington High. As this historic flag unfurled in the breeze on that beautiful October day, all our hearts were touched as we experi- enced a new and greater appreciation of our great nation - the land of the free and the home of the brave.
