BREAKING THE SOD FOR WASHINGTON HIGH After the formal act of spading the first dirt for the new high school, work progressed so the build- ing was ready for classes when school bells rang in the fall of 1953. In a very impressive program with members of the school hoard, administrators, contractors, and other dignitaries on the platform, Senator Guy M. Gillette brought the main address as Wasliington High School was dedicated to the education of all young people who enter her halls of learning. -2- FLAGS PRESENTED T0 WASHINGTON HIGH In a very impressive ceremony two flags were presented on dedication day to our new school. In the top picture Mr. Archie R. Nelson, on behalf of the American Legion, presented a flag to XVashington High School. This flag at one time had flown over the U. S. Senate building in Washingtoii, D. C. and had been obtained by U. S. Senator Guy M. Gillette for his home town, for he too is a Cherokee High School graduate. High School Principal M. O. Moe accepted the flag for the school. Mr. Earl Hobbs, assisted by members of the school band, raised the flag to the top of the new pole and this flag became the first to fly over Wfashington High. As this historic flag unfurled in the breeze on that beautiful October day, all our hearts were touched as we experi- enced a new and greater appreciation of our great nation - the land of the free and the home of the brave. M at i s-by S? , rss' james Smith, senior and president of Student Council, accepts from Mrs. Glenn Wfaldron a new flag which was given to our new school by the V. lf. XV. Auxiliary. The History of Cherokee High Schools Washingtoii High School is the third high school to be built in Chero- kee. Preceding it was the Lincoln building which was opened in 1895 and served the high school classes until 1916 when the Wilson High School building was completed. The new structure which is located at the intersection of Sixth and Bluff Streets was begun in the summer of 1952. The area where the new school is located covers approximately twenty-five acres. The building faces south with adequate parking and playground areas surrounding it to coincide with the future plans of expansion. The building is designed with the plan in mind that the gymnasium will be built on the west and an auditorium and additional classrooms on the north and east. The building is 300 feet long and has 26,850 square feet of floor space. Included in its interior are nine classrooms, a library-study hall, and phy- sical education room. In addition there are two teacher rest rooms and lounges, a general office, one book room, one principal's private office, and two counselor rooms. The homemaking unit and science room are two of the most outstanding features of the new building. Another feature within the school is the library-study hall combina- tion which not only provides all the books and reference material to a large number of students at a time, but also contains a stage which serves as a recreational reading area. The building was officially opened at a dedication ceremony which was held on October 15, 19 5 3. The American Legion and VFW Auxiliary had charge of the dedication of the flags and flag pole at 3 :00 p.m. Senator Guy M. Gillette was the guest speaker at the presentation service at 8:00 p.m. in the gym of the new building. .-4.. R. E. SCHOOL LUSFUDIAINS A school custodian must be a jack of all trades and a minute mann for he is called upon at any time to do many different jobs every day. XVhether it is a job at the athletic field, in the gym, for a class play, doing some repairs, or just cleaning up dirt and papers from classroom and hall - he is on the job doing whatever duty demands. EARL HOBBS is our head custodian. He must keep a calendar and follow the schedule for all the many school functions that keep the school serving the students and the public day and night throughout the school year. LEONARD LEASE is pictured explaining the operation of the automatic furnace to some members of the physics class. Shorty,' is glad to explain the many wonderful things in the building to all who ask him. CHARLES NVARREN, chief engineer at the new XVashington High School, is a hard work- ing man who is interested in keeping Wfashing- ton High spic and span . He spends hours cleaning and polishing the halls and classrooms. He is shown operating the electric floor polisher in the main hall of our school. Through Ethel Savage, played by Patsy Elorine, the audience met gentle inmates of the Cloisters . Elorence, Barbara Wallace, Hannibal, Roger Hinkeldeyg Fairy May, Sharon Holmes, Jeffery, Charles Stiles and Mrs. Paddy, Caryl Lee Kreykes. The purpose of these people, according to the playwright, is to show contrast between Mrs. Savagels children and the insane world on the out- side. Representing that world are Titus, the senator, Charles Peterson, Samuel, the jurists, James Smith, and the much married Lily Belle, Irene Angnos. The children design to have their mother declared insane in order to control the family millions for themselves. As guardians of sanity and proportion Dr. Emmett, Ronald McManus, and Miss Willie, Patricia Osterling, added to the solution of the complica- tion which arose over Mrs. Savage,s sanity and her ten million dollars in bonds. These people, each with his own lack of mental balance, should be remembered for their qualities as human beings and not for their incapac- ities. This comedy, blended with charm, humor and fantasy was presented April 8 under the direction of Earl Sherman, speech director, with the help of Betty McKenzie and Sandra Locke as student directors. Also assisting Mr. Sherman were James Smith and Frank McFarlane on stage production and Jeanene Johnson on make-up. Mama ftloan I-Iantsbargerj had a bank account that never would be used until a critical moment arose. XVhen Dagmar QCarole Newlandj went to the hospital, Mama saw her only after disguising herself as a scrubwoman and fooling the hospi- tal Staff. There was a time when Aunt Trina QShirley Howardj wanted to marry Mr. Thorkelson QTed Mahlerj , but was afraid to ask permission of the head of the family, gruff Uncle Chris qPhil Hartliepj. Mama in her kind way saw to it that her timid sister had her wish. NVhen Uncle Chris died, the entire family found Ollt the fine things he had done for children like Arne QXVillard Brinegarj who were lame like himself. Kathrin wanted to become a writer and when her stories were rejected, Mama went to the famous author lflorence Dana Moorehead fPeggy Wfaddellj and in exchange for her secret recipe got criticism on Katrin's stories. Katrin tried again and in writing about her own family she was successful. It was only then that Mama and Papa fliob Montgomeryj told the children that there was no bank account. The lie had been told to give the children security. Miss Dorothy Freriks, school nurse, taught Care of the sick in the homel' to members of the homemaking classes. She is shown teaching the proper way to help a sick person rest in a sitting position when they are recover- ing from an illness. lt was time for GSC to decorate the Christmas tree in the study hall and we were so happy. We were thinking about the 'joys of the season' and the two weeks of vacation so near at hand. 34- I 1 james Smith, student council president, confers with Mr. R. T. Craigo, general assembly speaker for the Eighteenth Annual Vocational Conference. James pre- sided at the assembly meeting and was student chair- man for this high school Career day. Two bold students, Jeanne Mulkey and Patricia Gillespie, reveal the hidden secrets of their locker as they do a little spring house cleaning. John Turnland had a little raceoon. And everywhere ,lohn went the ,coon was sure to go. It came to school one day and visited biology Class. Wlieli it became very friendly with the instructor, Mr. Lieklider, the students laughed in great delight. Sophomore Class Plays The three one-act sophomore class plays, under the direction of Mr. Theodore Carlquest, were presented on February 16 at 8 p.m. in the Wilson auditorium. The student directors were Karen Becker and Prist cilla McKenzie. Joan Cuffel, Marlene Ament and Patty Braley acted as prompters. Make-up committee included Marilyn Grover, Betty Fortner and Donna Wilson. Stage crew helpers were George Day, Larry Scott, Allyn Moe and John Turnland. THE LEGEND OF CAMILLE This one act drama by Charles George is an adaptation of the famous French play Camille , by Alexander Dumas the Younger. This romantic story tells of a bewitching coquette who carries on a tempestuous and ill-fated romance with the handsome Amand Duval. The setting is Paris, and the cast is composed entirely of women. Camille is portrayed by Mary Margaret Rupp, Nanie, Ann Hankens, Madame Prudence, Jo Ann Burkhart, Olympe, Myrna Cowan, and Anto- nette, Donna Lanxon. SUBMERGED A tragedy by H. Stuart Cottman, takes place in the forward compart- ment in a wrecked and submerged submarine. A commander and five men are trapped on the bottom of the ocean. The suspense and fatal tragedy which composes this play make it one of the best ever written. The all male cast includes the following boys: McAndrews, the com- mander, Dennis Wray, Bruce, the coward, Donald Bevins, Dunn, the lover, Robert Armbrecht, Shaw, the dreamer, Tracy Anderson, and Jorg- son, the bully, Lester Hicks. XINGU A comedy in one act by Thomas Seller, is a dramatization of Edith Warton's story. A group of club women try to entertain a high-hat woman novelist. To start a conversation, one member begins to talk about Xingu, a word that no one knows of, but one that no one will admit. The result is an entertaining comedy. This play had an all-girl cast with the part of Mrs. Ballinger played by Doris Hall, Mrs. Leveret, Virginia Derksen, Mrs. Plynth, Marika Williams, Miss Van Vluyck, Carol Berkler, Miss Laura Glyde, Nancy Kintigh, Mrs. Fanny Roby, Elizabeth Gentry, Osric Dane, Sue Eaton, and the maid, Patsy Wfayman. -35... POW WOW Pow Wow originated in 1934 as only a mimeographed school paper. Through the years, it has come to appear every Monday night as a full- page section in the Cherokee Daily Times. A worthwhile, interesting, and newsy Pow Wow each Week is the goal for which the thirty members of the staff give their time and talents. Lee Ann Anderson and Barbara Wallace, co-editors, and Mr. Lundy, Pow Wow advisor, successfully guided the staff in producing a comparable paper. June McLaughlin and Jo Ann Burkhart wrote the worthwhile editor- ials. Reporting the news from school were Paula Wilcox, Nancy Casey, Marilyn Alloway, Joan Hantsbarger, Mary Margaret Rupp, Patsy Florine, and Donna Lanxon. Shirley Lauer, Patricia Osterling, and Lois Ehrich penned some clever features, while John Andrews and Charles Stiles very capably handled boys' sports. Darlene Clement kept us informed of girls' sports and of the music activities. The artistic abilities of Caryl Lee Kreykes and Kay Rasmus resulted in clever and interesting cartoons. Ronnie McManus, photographer, faith- fully kept Pow Wow supplied with snap-shots. Janet McAlpine and Nancy Kintigh exchanged papers with many high school and colleges, and in the form of an exchange column, penned many items of interest. Carole Newland took charge as secretary and kept all of the records. Irene Angnos and Ann Hankins proof read all of the copies after the typists, Betty McKenzie, Barbara Seaman, and Sharon Holmes, headed by Margaret Fuchs, had completed the typing in preparation for Velda Maffin, flunky, to take the finished copy to the printer. -46... Five staff members, Lee Ann Anderson, Barbara Wallalce, Caryl Lee Krcykes, june McLaughlin, and Charles Stiles, at- tended the Iowa High School Press Association convention, CLI-I.S.P.A.j in Des Moines, on November 13 and 14. They at- tended discussion groups and entered writing contests. Lee Ann Anderson received an honorable mention in the News Nllfriting contest. The trip was highlighted with a banquet at the University church, and with being guests of the LH.S.P.A. to the college football game. The delegates returned with some good ideas for improvement of Pow Woiv, which were pre- sented to the staff. Membership requirements for Pow XVOW are the desire to write, better than average ability, maximum effort, and punctuality. It is these qualities of the writers which qualify Pow Woxx' to deserve an uexcellentn rating by the National Scholastic Press Association. Cherokee was one of the few smaller high school to receive this rating. Quill and Scroll It was Februar 6, 1938, when the international honorary societ for . . y. . . , . J Y lu li school ournahsts was introduced in Cherokee H1 h School. The 5 . 1 . . . . . g principal function of this honorary organization is to hold an annual banquet at which the new members are initiated into the organization. Membership is based on four main requirements. The student must be a junior or a senior in high school and in the upper one-third of his class in scholastic standing. Recommendation by the faculty advisor is essential, as is the acceptance and approval of an example of the studentls journalistic work, by the National Quill and Scroll board. The Annual Quill and Scroll banquet was held April 27, with Charles Stiles as master of ceremonies, Lee Ann Anderson, Barbara Wallace, Caryl Lee Kreykes and June McLaughlin, all present officers of Quill and Scroll, as host and hostesses to the initiates. The initiates, Patsy Florine, Joan Hantsbarger, Paula Wfilcox, Patricia Osterling, Shirley Lauer, and Lois Ehrich, spoke on an appointed phase of journalism. Art Service Club lion! One year ago the Art Service Club was formed. The purpose of this organization is to perform any art work required or needed by the school system and to provide useful experience for the members. Mr. Reese, art instructor, is faculty advisor. Officers of the organiza- tion are: Caryl Lee Kreykes, president, Joan Keeline, vice-president, Sylvia Gorna, scretary, and Barbara Wallace, treasurer. Meetings are held Tuesday and Wednesday after school in the art room, at Wilsoii Junior High School. Various awards including a membership pin in the form of a palette, a letter C , and numerals to be attached to the pin are given in accordance with the number of working hours a member has contributed. Some of the duties of the ASC include posters, stage decorations, signs, and anything else requested in the way of art service. The organization has worked in co-operation with the cheerleaders and the band by decor- ating the school and making decorations for the band performances before each game. The Art Service Club sponsored an exhibit at the Sanford Museum and pieces from this exhibit were chosen to be displayed at the Iowa State Fair in an exhibition sponsored by the club. A small group was also chosen to attend the 24th annual Iowa High School Art Exhibition at the University of Iowa on Saturday, April 24, 1954. Other special projects include a pot luck supper and an initiation-installation breakfast. The organization earned money by selling concessions at one of the games, selling lick 'em suckers, and working for various clubs and businesses in Cherokee. There are only four main requirements other than being at least a Sophomore and having a C average. They are co-operation, industry, initiative, and imagination. Homecoming Queen, Ruth Peterson, who graciously expressed her thanks for being chosen queen, and who wished our team the 'tbest of luck , was attired in a lovely gown of blue and white. She was attended by four pretty seniors, Patty Peterson, Shirley Phipps, Barbara Wallace, and Shirley Lauer. After che coronation, Queen Ruthie and her attendants reigned over the parade and the homecoming game with Spirit Lake. It was the thrill and exuberance which Homecom- ing casts over the entire school body, which surged through the Cherokee Braves, and gave them the power to prove that on this all important day, they were undefeatable. Christopherson formerly from South Sioux City, and Bruce Pickford from Sanborn, and the adoption of the single-wing offense, Cherokee's football record fell below .500 for the first time in many years. However, the Braves' 2-7 record wasn't a good indication of their potential. The Braves simply couldn't grasp the new type of blocking demanded by the single-wing. Therefore, with three games left on the schedule, a switch to the old T somewhat buoyed Cherokee's lagging spirits. This was demonstrated by their fine showing against powerful Spencer. Statistically speaking, the Tribe gained 1,245 yards compared to 1,513 for opponents. Opponents out- scored us 160 to 89. Cherokee was penalized 205 yards to 265 by opponents. Our punting average was 38.7 compared to 29.6 for the opposition. We completed 23 of 48 passes compared to 22 of 54 for oppon- ents. The season's final, supposedly a toss-up with Storm Lake, saw the Braves behind 14-0 only to roar back in the second half to win 33-14. It, along with the Spencer game, was a great demonstration of Cherokee courage and explosive ability. Another factor for the losing season was the fact that every team in the conference was pointed for the Braves. This was evidenced by the fact that many teams said the Cherokee game was their hardest contest. Eleven seniors who played their last game for Cherokee were Stiles, Martin, Marvin Corrington, John- son, Smith, Hahn, Burkhart, Ranney, Peterson, Ryan, and XVebb. Larry Johnson, steller Tribe tackle, was picked on the first all-conference team. Jim Smith, center, and Ralph Martin, back, were placed on the second team, and Chuck Stiles, back, and Ronald Hahn, tackle, received honorable mention. ...51... Cherolcee's IQ53 Football Season IDA GROVE 7 CHEROKEE 0 The Braves opened their 1953 season, under new head coach, M. E. Christopherson, by bowing to a powerful Ida Grove eleven 7-0. The Hawks, sporting their only touchdown early in the game as Cherokee stiffened on defense. Ron Hahn, Ralph Martin, and Pat Ryan showed well in holding the Hawk attack. EMMETSBURG 7 CHEROKEE 6 Leading until late in the fourth quarter by Don Burkhart,s recovered fumble in the end zone, Cherokee again fell as Emmetsburg drove for the touchdown. The try for the extra point was good and Cherokee was on the short end of a 7-6 score. Larry Johnson, Burkhart, and Martin were stand- outs on offense and defense both. ESTHERVILLE 26 CHEROKEE 0 Estherville's Midgets, fresh from their 14-12 victory over Spencer and ranking fifth in the state in class AA, completely dominated the game and whalloped Cherokee 26-0. Frank Mahan and company simply out- charged the Braves and were never in trouble. Ralph Martin and center Jim Smith were defensive standouts, however, for the outgunned Tribe. SHELDON 18 CHEROKEE 6 Sheldon, buoyed by homecoming, spoiled a determined Cherokee bid and rolled on to a hard-fought 18--6 victory. The Braves again scored first on Martin's plunge. Hahn and Johnson were mainstays in the line. CHEROKEE 26 SPIRIT LAKE 13 This time homecoming worked in Cherokee's favor and they rolled on to victory. Martin, Marvin Corrington, and LeRoy Nelson all scored for the Braves. SIBLEY 20 CHEROKEE 6 Playing on a cold rainy night at Sibley, the Braves sank to a new low, by losing to the Generals, for the first time in over 15 years. Cherokee once more scored first, but then seemed to fall apart. Martin and Chuck Stiles showed well offensively. SPENCER 28 CHEROKEE 6 Playing one of their best games of the year, Cherokee threw a terrific scare into Spencer before bowing to superior power. It was Chuck Stiles who sprinted 97 yards from scrimmage to give the crowd its greatest thrill of the season and sent the Braves ahead 6-0 at the half. From then on, al- though the Braves refused to let down, Spencer simply poured on the power. They scored with 3 seconds left to give the margin. Bobby Creel, Martin, Smith, Hahn, Burkhart, Johnson, and Peterson on defense, were Brave standouts. ..52.. LE MARS 27 CHEROKEE 7 Scoring first, for the fifth time of the season Cherokee started like they meant to win. However, a LeMars attack, which featured over 21 passes, started to Click and the final score was all the Bulldog's. The Braves ground attack, good at times, was led by Martin, XVebb, and Stiles while the Braves forward wall forced LeMars to the air. CHEROKEE 33 STORM LAKE 14 Losing by 14 to nothing and seemingly headed for another defeat, Cherokee suddenly turned savage and chased the Tornadoes all over the field. Nelson scored first. Then Chuck Stiles threaded his way 41 yards for another. Martin then tallied twice on bull-dozing smashes through the middle and finally, near the close, Stiles applied the coup-de-grace as he scored again around end. It was a terrific close to a dismal season and Coach Christopherson was carried from the field by the over-joyed Tribe. The resurrgent Brave barrier was again manned by Ryan, Johnson, and Hahn as well as a host of others. FOOTBALL SQUAD ' - , . BASKETBALL GAMES Cherokee opened up the season with a Win over Orange City 38 to 36. Al Lothrop was high point man with 13 points. Chuck Stiles hit the win- ning basket with 7 seconds before the final gun. The Braves started out on the right foot in the Lakes Conference by downing Estherville 61 to 44. Pat Ryan swished 22 points for high honors. Tough Paullina, Sioux Valley champs, used a stubborn defense and good rebounding to drop the Braves S1 to 44. Ryan scored 10 points for the Cherokee cause. The Braves avenged an earlier football defeat by Sibley as they journ- eyed there to paste the Generals 52 to 36. Lothrop with 15 received high point honors. ...57.. The team, led by Pat Ryan's 19 points, hit 39 per cent from the field. Larry Johnson, hitting 13 markers himself, played probably the best de- fensive game of his career by holding big 6'4 Harold johnson down to 12 points. Harold Johnson had previously been rated as one of the five hundred best high school ball players in the United States by Sport maga- zine. Lothrop, who contributed 16 points, along with newcomer Wayne Ekren played fine all around aggressive ball. The team won over Emmets- burg 57-45. ' Although losing the Storm Lake game 54-52, Cherokee played medi- ocre to good ball. The points were fairly well distributed between Wayne Ekren, Pat Ryan, Al Lothrop, and Larry Johnson getting 16, 14, 10, and 6 respectively. Wayne Ekren rallied for the Braves in all around play. Poor defense and free throw shooting hindered the Braves. In the Spirit Lake game qs 4-44, Cherokee's favorj , Dick Sagness saw his first real action when he replaced Pat Ryan who fouled out with 7 minutes to go after hitting 10 points. Dick dumped in 7 points in the latter minutes along with showing cool floor play. Lathrop led the scor- ers with 15 and was followed closely by Wayne Ekren with 12. Larry Johnson played fine defensive work along with hitting 7 points. Losing another close game to Storm Lake C47-463 was probably the hardest defeat to take all year. The Braves tied the game up after con- quering an 11 point deficit at half time, but to no avail. Lothrop led the scorers with 19, 15 coming in the 2nd half. Johnson and Ekren played their general good floor game. Spencer handed the Braves their worst defeat of the season, a 5 3 to 37 slaughter at Spencer. No one on the Cherokee team could stop the scoring of the sharp shooting Spencer line. Coach Luther and some of the members of the basketball team are giving serious con- sideration to their task of the evening as portrayed by this banner prepared by members of the Art Service Club - tear down their teepee - upset Spirit Lakes' chances of winning the game tonight. Sheldon's invasion of Brave territory ended in a 51-43 defeat for the plucky Orabs. Chuck Peterson looked outstanding as he hawked this year's record of 17 rebounds for the Braves. 5 Sibley again tasted defeat at the hands of the Braves when they journeyed to Cherokee. As the final gun sounded, Sibley found themselves on the short end of the 54 to 40 score. Ryan again was Cherokee's ace in the hole. Emmetsburg was the host to Cherokee for the second game which was nip and tuck all the way. The Braves were only slightly domineering, but the end of the game found the En Hawks trailing by a 45 to 42 score. Dick Sagness, Pat Ryan and Al Lothrop looked outstanding for the Braves. In the 2nd game with Spirit Lake, Cherokee took a beating. The Braves got off to a good start, and it looked as if this was an easy one. But cold shooting and draggy rebounding in the second half cost the boys the game for they went down to defeat 49-41. Cherokee gave a fine demonstration of ball handling skill to knock the plucky Spencer Tigers off by a score of 69 to 58. The Braves were led in victory by Ryan, Johnson, and Lothrop, the mainstays of the night. The Sheldon Orabs couldn't hold the Braves down in the first quarter and it ended with the Braves 14-3. Trying to get the situation in hand, Sheldon came out the second quarter with a full court press. This was where the Braves met their doom as they were defeated 51-46. The Braves got off to a poor start in their second game with Estherville and just couldn't seem to get going. Estherville, on the other hand, seemed to have lady luck on their side. Even though versatile Pat Ryan played outstanding ball he couldn,t do it alone and Cherokee went down to defeat 54-49. BASKETBALL The second team, consisting of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who were not on the first team, played fifteen games winning eight and losing seven. Mr. Pickford coached the boys and at times had a starting lineup composed entirely of sophomores. Playing before large audiences these boys furnished real basketball thrills as they proved that they knew how to play the game with a will to win. In che county tournaments the freshmen-sophomores lost to Aurelia, the county champions, 35-23 in a first round game. .-70.-.
