Eileen Scala 1961 Alma Mater Dear Washington High School, the sound of thy name Inspires us to deeds great and true; We will stand for the honor and add to the fame Of thy colors the White and the Blue. Every swift flying year, our love will impart New lustre in manifold ways. To the name now enshrined in the innermost heart Of the children here singing thy praise. We have striven for thee on the floor and the field; On the platform we’ve argued with skill To uphold thy bright name and thy honor to shield, And we’ll ever fight on with a will, And in gain and in loss as one body we’ll stand For the fair and the square and the free; And through dark or through bright we will e’er be a band To the uttermost, loyal to thee. —Julia Meaker 2 CONTENTS Dedication . After a successful senior year on the Hackettstown “9”, he attended Lafayette College. There he became a varsity team member under the coaching of Bill Coughlin, one of the greatest college coaches in the land. “Marse Joe” has gained state-wide recognition in his 24 years of coaching Washington High’s baseball teams. This year’s team kept up his victorious record by winning three championships—the Little Four League, the Delaware Valley League, and the State. Joe Steinhardt is not just a coach. He has been teaching for 25 years. No one ever sleeps in his U. S. History I class. Discussion is always encouraged and can cover any imaginable topic. The Civil War and Abraham Lincoln are taught with added emphasis. To the students who really know and appreciate Joe Steinhardt, he is a good and valuable friend who is always ready and willing to listen and give advice. The Class of ’61 is proud and happy to dedicate this edition of the yearbook to Joseph Steinhardt in this his 25th year at Washington High. v% 5 CLIFFORD C. Best Wishes to From the Students of LEON O. FISHER The students of Washington High School would like to express their gratitude to Mr. Fisher for his thoughtful guidance during the years he has served as Superintendent of the Washington schools. Mr. Fisher came to Washington in 1945 from Livingston, where he had been Superintendent of Schools. He taught English literature in Grades 7 and 8 until 1948, when he became Oxford Central School Superintendent. In 1952 he returned to Washington to become Superintendent of the schools here, a position which he carried out with great integrity and devotion. His warmth of personality, his gift for friendship, and his ability to make each person feel his own worth and importance have been of inestimable value in our school system. We wish him happiness in his retirement. 84 Both of You Washington High School EDWARD E. BELET In appreciation and gratitude for his sincere interest and unfaltering guidance during the time he has served as Principal of our school, we, the students of Washington High School, are devoting this page of recognition to Mr. Belet. Mr. Belet has been in the field of education since 1951, holding posts in Net-cong and Rockaway before coming to Washington. He has taught English and French in both Netcong High School and Morris Hills Regional High School, where he also served as Vice-Principal. He became Principal of the Netcong High School in 1954. He came to Washington from Netcong in 1958. Although he has been with us but a short time, we are grateful that we have had such a patient and understanding person, who has worked long, hard hours for the improvement of Washington High School. We wish him success in all his future endeavors in the field of education. 85 SEATED, left to right: Benjamin Minier, President; Mrs. Carl Le-masters, Vice-President; Roger M a senior, Robert Burd, Mrs. Herbert Trubek, Leon O.
