PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As we consider our lives, one of the most important of all things is for us not to be deceived by those who complain bitterly of “these troublous times” and inquire “what is the world coming to?” No times have not been troublous: the depression of the early nineteen thirties was no worse than the panic of 1837; no war of modern times has matched the wholesale slaughter and utter misery visited upon Europe during the Thirty Years War three centuries ago; the political “ins” have always been a repository of corruption and the “outs” the compendium of all the virtues, since the beginning of recorded time; and the world has been going to the dogs for at least fifteen thousand years! As for Communism and its threat to freedom and righteousness, there has been no time in the long history of mankind when evil has not been rampant in the earth. Our duty is clear: Let us live honest, faithful lives, remembering that down through the ages the world has been held steady by the quiet, unassuming, consistent goodness of millions of ordinary people just like us. We can survive depression and war and bad politics and evil systems because of the dogged persistence of the common man; “common” because he is the person who possesses, along with myriads of other persons, the virtues which are needful. Evil is a challenge to be met by all of us in living day after day, year in and year out, steadily and patiently, in calm pursuit of everyday purposes; “in duties well-performed and days well-spent”; in fulfilling our destiny by meeting faithfully and joyfully every obligation in the sphere of life in which we find ourselves, knowing that nothing, however small, is trivial in God’s sight. And above all, let us rest in the peace of the assurance that we are indeed the Father’s children, and that each day, no matter what its experiences, can be a victory of the spirit if we abandon our lives to Him. “Be strong! We are not here to play, to dream, to drift; We have hard work to do, and loads to lift; Shun not the struggle; face it; ’tis God’s gift.” 6
