THE SENIOR CLASS of WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL of WASHINGTON, NEW JERSEY Presents The 1952 CACHi: DEDICATION The class of 1952 is happy to dedicate this edition of the Cache to Miss Julia Meaker. During her thirty-nine years of service as a teacher in Washington High, she has taught classes in mathematics, English, history, and science. For the past three years she has served as principal of the high school, and it has been in this capacity that many of our class have come to know her best. No matter what the difficulty—a personal problem, a class or club project, a proposed innovation—Miss Meaker has always been willing to sit down, talk over the situation, and help us to arrive at a feasible solution. We have all had occasion to appreciate her fairness, her sense of humor, and her consideration for the individual. Thus, at the end of Miss Meaker’s active participation in the affairs of Washington High School, we, the Senior Class, should like to say “thank you” for all the good and wise things you have taught us and for all the wonderful memories you have given us. As we go forth together, we extend to you sincerest wishes for success and happiness in the years to come. -I 4 Y CONTENTS Principal’s Message .............................................. 6 Faculty and Administration ....................................... 9 Classes ......................................................... 15 Activities ...................................................... 43 Sports ........................................................ 61 Subscriptions ................................................... 79 -I 5 y PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As we consider our lives, one of the most important of all things is for us not to be deceived by those who complain bitterly of “these troublous times” and inquire “what is the world coming to?” No times have not been troublous: the depression of the early nineteen thirties was no worse than the panic of 1837; no war of modern times has matched the wholesale slaughter and utter misery visited upon Europe during the Thirty Years War three centuries ago; the political “ins” have always been a repository of corruption and the “outs” the compendium of all the virtues, since the beginning of recorded time; and the world has been going to the dogs for at least fifteen thousand years! As for Communism and its threat to freedom and righteousness, there has been no time in the long history of mankind when evil has not been rampant in the earth. Our duty is clear: Let us live honest, faithful lives, remembering that down through the ages the world has been held steady by the quiet, unassuming, consistent goodness of millions of ordinary people just like us. We can survive depression and war and bad politics and evil systems because of the dogged persistence of the common man; “common” because he is the person who possesses, along with myriads of other persons, the virtues which are needful. Evil is a challenge to be met by all of us in living day after day, year in and year out, steadily and patiently, in calm pursuit of everyday purposes; “in duties well-performed and days well-spent”; in fulfilling our destiny by meeting faithfully and joyfully every obligation in the sphere of life in which we find ourselves, knowing that nothing, however small, is trivial in God’s sight. And above all, let us rest in the peace of the assurance that we are indeed the Father’s children, and that each day, no matter what its experiences, can be a victory of the spirit if we abandon our lives to Him. “Be strong! We are not here to play, to dream, to drift; We have hard work to do, and loads to lift; Shun not the struggle; face it; ’tis God’s gift.” 6 JULIA MEAKER Principal J 7 i 2. Folks are always saying, “Let’s look at the record book,” so we have included throughout this sports section cumulative totals of our four major sports from 1928 to the present time. In the same spirit, let’s look at this year’s achievements. FOOTBALL The Washington High School football season of 1951 got off to a good start with the defeat of Dunellen and Belvidere. However, with the third game between the Blue Streaks and Roxbury, Washington received a stunning blow with a 37-6 defeat. After this, Washington fell into somewhat of a slump which we didn’t quite pull out of. This Roxbury game was followed by two more defeats from Pen Argyl and Hackettstown. Washington was victorious over Franklin, but we lost our last three games. Our team played a much better ground game and didn’t score too often with passes. Inexperienced backs like Cornish, Kayal, and Phillips ably assisted the rest of the team. Lost through graduation are Cotton, Oram, Fiore, Miller, Brown, and Oberly. BASKETBALL Playing before a capacity crowd on each of their home appearances, cocaptains Burton and Wood posted a season’s record of 6 wins and 12 defeats with 5 of these defeats by a margin of 4 points or less. Because of injury, the elongated, highscoring Messner did not enter competition until the final 7 C. Neidig, A. Rossini games. Still handicapped, he proved effective as he averaged 15.4 points per game. A game average of 42.2 as opposed to 47 indicates the keen competition that prevailed in each encounter. High scorer for the season was Wood with 209 points, followed by Burton, Gee, Conners, Brown, and James with 185, 70, 60, 56 and 38 respectively. Had the team foul shooting average of 51 % been a bit higher, some additional victories would have been recorded. As we look to the future, we shall miss the height, aggressiveness, spirit, and sportsmanship of Messner, Brown, Burton, and Pulsinelli. To carry on next year for the Streaks will be the seasoned veterans: Wood, Gee, Jones, Conners, assisted by Hansen, Kayal, Garey, Miller, and Tootleman, who did creditable work as Jayvees. Under the coaching of Ray Edelman, Vic Hansen led his J.V.’s to a season’s record of 12 wins to 6 defeats. Hansen, Kayal, Tootleman, and Miller furnished the scoring punch. Garey. Miller, and Tootleman controlled the ball on the i 62 y M. Ponce, R. Julian, co-captain; I. Messner, M. Lance, co-captain; G. Schumann, M. Fiori, A. Sillett outside and set up plays which were terrific. Cooper, the most improved player on the squad, Widenmyer, and Platia were the capable reserves who could fit into a spot whenever needed. WRESTLING March 8, 1952, was a momentous day for the members of the Washington High School wrestling team. It was on this day in Elizabeth, N. J., that the New Jersey Inter-Scholastic Athletic Association sponsored its annual tournament for State wrestling champion. Bill Oberly, heavy weight class; Ronald Marinelli, 136 lb. class; Ben Fiori, 130 lb. class; and Dick Cornish, 141 lb. class, represented Washington High. After many tense moments on the mats, W. H. S. was announced State Wrestling Champion. Oberly, Marinelli, and Fiori had won first place in their respective divisions and Cornish had placed second in his. W. H. S. had certainly come through with flying colors. Another important fact is that both Oberly and Marinelli had won their championship titles for the second successive year. We of W. H. S. would like to thank and congratulate these boys and their fine coach, Mr. Goles, for an outstanding season. BASEBALL 1951 With an excellent outlook for a successful season, the results were disappointing in a few instances. Opening with two losses, the boys got on the right track with three victories, but then became erratic, winning a few and losing some more. The main weakness seemed to be in the pitching department with no experienced boys able to hold down the opponents’ scores. Lost through graduation were: John Bodine, Captain; David Pritchard, Bob O’Bryon, Mario Rossini, Buck Mayberry, Fred Angle. 63 } 1928-1952 Won 117 Tied 13 Lost 91 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Dunellen 7 Belvidere 20 Roxbury 37 Pen Argyl 28 Hackettstown 20 Franklin 6 Scotch Plains 28 Wilson 18 Flemington 20 Won —3 Washington 34 Washington 37 Washington 6 Washington 12 Washington 0 Washington 13 Washington 0 Washington 0 Washington 13 Lost — 6 FOOTBALL SQUAD First Row: P. It’s about my experience in the retailing field. Believe me, Variety Store business is fast-moving and interesting. Each counter is a store in itself. Here at Murphy’s one learns retailing from the bottom up! I started out as an extra salesgirl, working every day after school. When I was graduated, I was fortunate to be placed in charge of a counter. I never knew how really interesting this woi'k could be . . . it’s just like having a shop of my own. I’m growing here, taking more responsibility as I go. There’s still more room for advancement ... I can work myself into a position of merchandise buyer, section supervisor or bookkeeper in the office. Soon I hope to be selected to train for the job of Personnel Directress in a large new Murphy Store. All of us at Murphy’s have an equal chance to better ourselves. From what I can see Murphy’s is tops in training . . . and there isn’t a store in town to beat Murphy’s on Employee benefits! If you’re ambitious to make a “go” of retailing, join the “Gang” at Murphy’s soon as you can. G. C. MURPHY COMPANY WASHINGTON, N. J. 1 so y PERRUCCI, INC.
