The Senior Class Washington High School Washington, Neiv Jersey Presents THE 1951 CACHE It’s finally finished! After months of digging, hammering, and sawing the new addition is complete. Our student body enjoys the facilities provided in our shining and commodious classrooms. The new wing includes a cafeteria, a science laboratory, an agriculture shop, and a number of regular classrooms to relieve the increased school population. We, the Class of ’51, dedicate this yearbook to the new addition. To us, who have seen it begin and grow to completion it is more than a mass of bricks; it represents a project of progress. Therefore, we take great pleasure in designating the 1951 Cache as a tribute to the untiring efforts of all those who made the new wing possible. Garey, president. The Freshman Class The Freshman Class of ’50-’51 was officially inducted into high school at the Soph-Frosh Frolic in September. The first project we undertook was the selling of greeting cards, which turned out well. We are also planning the selling of cookies to acquire funds for our senior trip in 1954. We were happy to receive guidance from Mr. Bower, Mr. Acton, and our homeroom teachers. The upper-classmen have helped us make our adjustment to high school by explaining the rules and regulations of the school to us in an open meeting. Our teachers also have been helpful and considerate. We have been well satisfied with the work of our class officers throughout the year, and we are all looking forward to three more years of happy high school life. FRESHMAN CLASS First Row: E. Grbich, corresponding secretary. ASSEMBLY PRESENTATION OF STUDENT COUNCIL NOMINEES Student Council Student Council is the one organization which is representative of the entire school. The members are class and club presidents, homeroom representatives and alternates, and the five officers elected by the student body. Two of the elected officers resigned during the year — recording secretary, Martha Eagan, and president, Catherine Godfrey. Shirley Grbich was elected to the recording secretary position, and vice-president Bill Oberly carried on in the absence of a president. Student Council assumes responsibility for the Hall Sentinels, Traffic-Squad and Fire Squad, all of which have had to be enlarged during the year because of the addition to the building. Council also helped work out plans for the use of the new cafeteria. Ten delegates attended the annual convention of the N. J. A. H. S. C. held at Rutgers. Two of these delegates participated in the panel discussions — Catherine Godfrey as a speaker and Douglas Burton as a chairman. Three delegates also attended the Warren County meeting held at Belvidere. HOMEROOM REPRESENTATIVES ANI) ALTERNATES First Row: C. Hann, B. Hoover, E. Shenrock, C. Wood, F. Colaluce, J. Hann, K. The burden then rested on Rossini, thus shifting our offense to a passing game. As the season progressed and injuries increased in key positions, more men were shifted. Mayberry, a guard, often had to do a dual job when he was shifted to back up the line. Washington didn’t catch fire until the last four minutes of the Hacketts-town game. A forward pass to Cornish for a T.D., a blocked punt by O’Bryon, a recovery by Cornish to the 5 yd. stripe, a wide end run by Rossini, a line plunge — all united to give us victory. Bodine took over in the Wilson game where Rossini left off because of a shoulder separation. The season ended with a strong Flemington team’s defeat in the Turkey Day final. Our team displayed some real football, the linemen opening big gaps to pave the way for a show of real passing and running by Rossini and Bodine. Football Team irat Row: W. Fisher, F. Blanche, R. The season's climax took place at Belvidere as our boys lost out by two points in the closing minute of play to Hackettstown in the Little Four Championship playoff. “Walt” established a new school scoring record as he posted a game average of 18.7 points per game, scoring 122 field goals and 89 free throws for a total of 333 points. His consistent point production placed him in the number one spot in individual scoring in both the Little Four and the North Central Jersey Leagues. Wood, Pritchard, Kline, Burton, Rossini and Smith helped the cause by scoring 145, 139, 77, 66, 60 and 15 points respectively. As a team, the boys averaged 44.7 points per game, while the combined opponents averaged 49 points. Missing from our group next year will be “Dave” Pritchard, “Butch” Rossini and “Vimp” Smith, who will be graduated in June. Dave Miller, R. Brown, P. Cotton, D. Jones and M. Wrestling The 1950-51 team was built around G. Burd, R. O’Bryon, and W. Oberly, returning veterans. In the initial meets with Forty Fort and Easton, our team looked sad, but after the holidays and some hard work, the boys began to take on some form and confidence and finished the season with only two other defeats. Our team proved its ability by winning the District II Championship and the State Finals with three champions: Ronald Marinelli in the 134 lb. class, Robert O’Bryon in the 145 lb. class, and William Oberly, heavyweight division. The only disappointment was Guy Burd’s failure to make the state tournament. Wrestling Team First Row: J. Ribble, G. Burd, F. Perearpio, B. Fiore, R. Cornish, R. Marinelli, R. O’Bryon, V. Carnali, L. Donnini, R. Shot-well. The 1950 baseball team was a better organization of players than that of the previous year. The team’s record of won and lost is fairly good considering the size of the schools and the number of games played. John Bellini started at short stop in the first game of the year against Hampton. He slid into home and broke his ankle. Mr. Steinhardt then took Chuck Miller and put him at that spot, where he stayed all season. The success of the season was due to: Butch Rossini’s spectacular catches in the outfield; John Bodine’s hitting in the clinches; Dave Pritchard’s continual safe hitting, bunting, and fielding; Lee Docker’s work behind the plate with his battery mates Mario Pasquini, Jay Baldwin and Ted Davis; Ted Smith’s first base play, which will be sorely missed in ’51. That list doesn’t mention Bob O’Br.von’s great second base play or Dave Whitehead’s outfield work. They both contributed greatly, and the team as a whole tried its best. A drag bunt. After a hard day’s practice. Get going, boys, big day tomorrow. A well-earned trophy. 1. How about a cheer, girls! 2. Arch your backs! 3. Cheerleaders: Kneeling—S. Gross, M. Lance, co-captains T.
