C. details with class presi- Miss Dorothy G. Mulkey hard at work on dent, Carl Brenner. Cache subscriptions. Dedication As a token of our appreciation, the Class of 1948 dedicates this edition of the Cache to Miss Julia S. Meaker and Miss Dorothy G. Mulkey, senior advisers, who for many years have worked faithfully in guiding classes through the activities of the last year in high school. This year both Miss Meaker and Miss Mulkey have worked tirelessly to make all necessary arrangements for the April excursion to Washington, D. C., a project made more dear to each senior’s heart because it was abandoned during the war years. Our record of memories is made richer and sweeter because of what our advisers have made possible. C 4 ] CONTENTS Cache Staff Foreword Faculty and Administration Classes Activities Organizations Sports Subscriptions 1 5 ] Assistant Robert Adler and Editor Kenneth Neidig consider a Cache problem. Cache Pictures, engravings, copy, and deadlines—these things haunt the Cache Staff, whose objective is to produce a book to be treasured by all W. H. S. pupils. Composed of seniors and juniors, the latter obtaining practical experience for their book the following year, the staff labors long after school, arguing, drawing the dummy, cropping pictures, pasting, writing, typing, proofing and proofing again. This is the finished product. We hope you have as much pleasure in owning the book as we did in creating it. THE STAFF EDITORIAL COMMITTEE Left to Right: Seated—R. Adler, B. Alpaugh, S. Has-semer, J. [ 6 ] Foreword This album, our Cache of records for 1948. contains our impressions and remembrances of school life, expressed through the universal language of music. We have included the presto of athletics, the scherzo of dances, and the andante of routine scholastic activities. We have tried to emphasize the brilliant major chords of our association together, although we cannot forget that the parting at graduation will introduce a minor strain. The many cadences of our past school years have served to compose this, Our Song to Remember. C 7 ] A high order of world citizenship must be developed, along with greater competence in solving domestic problems. Educational opportunities must be extended to far more people than have had them heretofore. The Washington Borough schools are making an honest effort to do just this. Your four years of high school have been most fortunate years for you. You have shared with others your separate personalities, your hopes, your aspirations, and your thoughts of a better world in which we might live. You have helped us further the opportunities for a better Washington and in so doing have added greatly to our school. Permit me to congratulate you on this your graduation from high school. May you extend your educational opportunities to our community for years to come. Sincerely, E. L. GILLILAND Board of Education First Row: Seated left to right—Laurance Stopp, Elmer R. Miller, President Mrs. Hazel M. Hummer, William Thatcher. Standing—Forrest W. Miller, W. Benjamin Minier, Ernest L. Gilliland, Vice President Charles Cornish, Gregg W. Blackwood, Alonzo J. Bryan. t 8 ] A committee from the Middle Atlantic Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges visited this school October 28 and 29. This evaluation committee examined all phases of the school program and inspected the entire physical plant. The visit was necessary in order that this high school continue to be certified as an approved four year high school. The school has received tentative approval of its progress and facilities pending a meeting of the certification committee of the association in, the summer of 1948. There is no reason to doubt the continuation of VV. H. S. on the list of accredited four year high schools. The visiting committee expressed keen interest in and admiration of those phases of the school in which the students took an active part such as the student council, hall sentinels, traffic squad, and fire squad. They complimented the entire student body on its enthusiasm and wholesome attitude toward the school and its activities. The senior class should be proud of the part it played as leaders of the student body. EUGENE J. BRADFORD Evaluation Committee Left to Riylit: Eugene J. Bradford, Washington principal; Ernest L. That was the burning question on junior rings, but although our ring is not to be a standard one, we had fun choosing it from among the many good samples shown us. Money mad? Maybe we were, but with the prospects of a senior trip before us we were eager to sell Christmas candy, W pins, and stationery. Then came spring and the Junior Prom, crowning event of a busy year. Our first year in high school is crowded with memories—September’s Student Council Welcome Party, little blue handbooks, classes of forty-four with regular seats for thirty-eight, memorizing the Alma Mater, the rare privilege of descending into the “hole” to heave out assembly seats, the Soph Frosh Frolic, the Christmas card sale. All these helped to make us a part of high school. We’ve enjoyed our first year together, and we’re looking forward to the rest of our high school career. First Row: Left to Right—I. Dohney, M. Unknowns Once a month there is a meeting of the Unknowns, whose officers are X, Y, and Z, and whose adviser is the Significant Figure, Miss Weller. At these meetings the mathematic students explore the unknown and have a pleasant time with figures and puzzle problems. [51] Last, but certainly not least, our high school disc jockeys spin a few on sports. With varsity football, basketball, wrestling and baseball, plus the intramural program for boys and girls, we have an active year. Wrestling1 Varsity Left to Right: C. Harm, J. Simone, L. Lisk, C. Gruver, R. Fritts, eo-captain; D. Lance, D. Markle, C. Edolo, co-captain; T. Smith, H. Hissim, E. Marinelli, C. Everley, J. Bodine, J. Goies, coach. [52] [53] Football This year’s football squad began the first season under the newly installed permanent lighting system. The team did not boast a very heavy aggregation and, with a very large percentage of green material, was slow in getting started. Playing in their own class of ball, the team lost some tough games. In Dunellen it was on a last period pass; in Roxbury the team ended the 3rd quarter with a 6-6 tie, the ball being on the 1 yard line only to be set back with a 5 yard penalty and finally to be forced to give up the ball on downs on the 4 yard line. Having a group 4 school in Morristown, we found that game to be a one-sided struggle. Although we out-downed Hackettstown 11-7, in what looked like a close contest, the game ended in a 32-13 defeat because of pass interception. The final night game with Franklin ended in a 13-6 win. In the last two minutes there was a final drive after Frank Pulsinelli intercepted a pass on the 2 yard line with a 45 yard return, setting up the pace for the winning touchdown. Following this victory the Streaks were again outclassed by the Scotch Plains Championship Team and Wilson High’s pow’er house. The season ended with a victory over the Flemington team, 12-6, on Thanksgiving morning. Touchdown prevented. Instructions from the chief. Power play. Out of bounds. Night game. [54] Basketball The first call for candidates for the basketball team was issued November 17 with 24 hopefuls reporting for practice. Excluded from this group were those boys taking part in football. As we surveyed the array for a potential winning combination, it appeared that there was a reasonable distribution of height, a total lack of experience, but a wealth of desire to work hard. By December a voluntary dropping out made room for 10 football men to join the squad. As we look back on the record of the past year, we are impressed by the fact that the boys never lost hope for a moment. Each contest was entered with a definite feeling that “Tonight is our night.” It is interesting to note that in 7 of the 18 games, one man on the opposing team scored as many or more points as our total score. Captain Fred Pulsinelli, with 156 points, was the leading scorer on the team, followed by Hann with 117, Winget with 115, Baldwin 86, and Docker 77. In the win column the Jayvees were more successful, showing a record of 7 wins in 18 starts. The outlook for next season is a bit more rosy since, of the varsity eight, six will be on hand. With the experience gained this year and an added few inches in height, we can look forward to entering the win column next season. VARSITY Wash. Opp. Wash. At the beginning of the season prospects looked fair, but as the season rolled by the team began to take shape. Competition in several weight classes began to grow stronger, forcing the boys to be on their toes to hold their places on the team. It was that factor, plus the winning desire among the boys, which turned in one of the finest dual meet records to date. The difficulty seemed to be caused by lack of experience in the early part, but as a result of good spirit and fine attitude the hoys ended the season in excellent fashion. The record included nine victories and seven defeats. Among the more notable victories were games in which Phillips-burg was defeated 3-2 and Hackettstown 4-2. The latter victory enabled the team to finish in a tie with Hackettstown for high honors in the Warren County Little Three. Boys lost through graduation were Captain Vic Grbich. Albert DeCresci, Bill Detrick and Rav Bellini. This should leave a strong nucleus for the 1948 season. J. Lacey—c.f. R. Fritts—c. V. Grbich—3b. A. DeCresci—ss. B. Detrick—p. T. Smith—lb. F. The purpose of this club is to promote better sportsmanship amonu: the players. All senior boys who have earned at least two letters in a sport receive a sweater in recognition of their accomplishments. Eleven seniors received sweaters this year. In order to raise money, the club sponsored a wrestling match with the alumni, and a basketball game with the faculty. Members also sold candy, Christmas cards, and “T” shirts. Cheerleaders “Come on, kids. Yell louder! Let’s back our fellows with some spirit!” These familiar phrases echo through our gym as co-captains Anne Fiore and Dolores Hoover and their eight cheerleaders lead the student body in a pep rally. Cheerleaders are chosen at the beginning of the school year by a committee consisting of the principal, the girls’ physical education instructor, and two other members of the faculty. The contestants are judged on familiarity with routines and cheers, grace, pep, cooperation, ability, and willingness to practice. Left to Right: Anne Fiore, J. Sarson, T. Hadges, S. Cross, D. [59] Alma Mater Dear Washington High School the sound of thy name Inspires us to deeds great and true; We will stand for the honor and add to the fame Of thy colors the white and the blue. Every swift flying year our love will impart New luster in manifold ways, To thy name now enshrined in the innermost heart Of thy children here singing thy praise. We have striven for thee on the floor and the field ; On the platform we’ve argued with skill To uphold thy bright name and thy honor to shield, And we’ll ever fight on with a will. And in gain and in loss as one body we’ll stand For the fair and the square and the free; And through dark and through bright we will e’er be a band To the uttermost loyal to thee. —JULIA MEAKER [60] Autographs [61] Autographs [62] Autographs [63] Subscription Committee First Row: Left to Right—J.
