It remained for a group of juniors and seniors, interested in mathematics, to openly label themselves The Unknowns.” This group meets monthly during activity period. Topics discussed this year were mathematical puzzles and recreations, short cuts in arithmetic, and lives and contributions of famous mathematicians. Ushers Club The members of this club have worked hard throughout the year collecting tickets, selling refreshments, and distributing programs during all athletic events. The Ushers Club is a service organization which does not receive as much credit and recognition as it should. Absent: Doris Bolton, Joel Schneider, Robert Hann. La Alianza Espanola, composed of the members of the first, second, and third year Spanish classes, has drawn up a formal constitution. The motto of the club is Cada cual es hi jo de sus obras” (Each one is the son of his works); its flower is the madreselva (honeysuckle); its flag and coat-of-arms are those of Uruguay. Games and social activities such as parties are held at regular monthly meetings. Two technicolor movies were shown. The primary purpose of La Alianza Espanola is to supplement classroom work so as to increase the students’ interest in the subject and to provide various materials which promote efficiency in the language and add general knowledge of educational value. Typing Club The Typing Club, under the direction of Miss Bierman, is composed of students who wish to learn to type but are unable to fit typing into their regular schedules. The Student Council is composed of representatives of all organizations and classes, who, as a group, work for the students themselves. They handle all affairs, activities, and assemblies, striving for the betterment of our school. The officers are chosen by the entire student body. Treasurer; Edith Bellini, Corresponding Secretary; Pete Perini, President; Dorothy Fowler. Recording Secretary; Ray Koestner, Vice President; Miss H. Stone, Adviser. with representatives of the Hackettstown High School Student Council concerning the bettering of relations between the two schools. In November, fifteen of our members attended the Twentieth Annual Convention of the State Association of Student Councils at New Brunswick. Ideas from this convention were brought to the entire council and later published in the school news of The Washington Star. The Student Council is responsible for Hall Sentinels, Traffic Squad, and Fire Squad; it has taken care of the introduction of speakers at assemblies; it has been responsible for improving and changing all locker combinations, and it has patrolled our games to maintain order and to prevent damage to our school. The meetings of our Student Council are held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, although Executive Committee meets each Wednesday when there is no regular council meeting. [28]
