“ — — Washington High School Seal i Last year the above design was selected by the entire student body as the standard school seal. The sheaves of wheat in the upper left-hand corner of the field represent the agriculture for which The Garden State and Warren County are famous. The section on the upper right symbolizes Warren County's industry. The lower part is a reproduction of the school tower. On either side of the crest are torches of knowledge. The 1946 class rings are the first to bear this seal, which will appear on the rings of all future classes. This year emblems and kerchiefs displaying the seal were sold. It is expected that in the future the seal will be used in numerous other ways. Every autumn Gippy” and Smitty” put up the snow fence and mark off the football field in preparation for the season’s games. At the first sign of cold weather they start the fires and keep them going until spring brings warm fair days. It may snow during the night, but by the time we students arrive, the walks are clean and the ice is sprinkled with ashes. Spring is heralded by the sound of the power mower which drifts through open windows. Every day by three o'clock, they can be seen cleaning classrooms and halls. Wc appreciate their unselfishness in giving up some of their few free hours in the evening so that wc may hold dances and other school activities. Wherever and whenever help is needed, be it a refractory locker or a non-cooperative shade, the call goes out for Smitty” and Gippy.” Despite all our demands on them, they greet us always with a smile and friendly word. In fact, we feel that Mr. Lunger and Mr. Smith are an indispensable part of our school and our school life, and we take this opportunity to tell them publicly of our appreciation. Cip in action'. The darkness of war, greed suffering, and famine is being driven from the earth. Mankind must learn the art of living together before it is too late. Civilization must move forward. It is your challenge and your responsibility as students to help build a better world. May you succeed where we have failed! May the guidance received at Washington High School enable you to play nobly your part. We are counting on you. Joseph W. Howe Supervising Principal When the atomic bomb burst in Japan, men suddenly became aware that they were to live in a world with undreamed of power for good or evil. This event made it urgent that we educate ourselves to control this power if we are to live in peace and happiness. It is up to you to see that we do not let atomic power work for evil. The world is changing; you must change with it. See to it that these changes do not dissipate the sources for good of all that has gone before, as the explosion in New Mexico vaporized the steel tower. In America you have the opportunity to protest or approve. Use this power intelligently at all times when you hear of injustice. Remember that true happiness comes through service to others and loyalty to your home, country and church. Donald H. Fritts Principal £7] Mary L. It forms a valuable adjunct to the classroom by providing, in an atmosphere of cordiality and informality, many desirable activities for which the class time is not sufficient. Pupils become more proficient in the French language and indirectly but definitely learn much about France, its culture, civilization, and significance in contemporary world history. Future Farmers of America This year the F. F. A. has carried on a program to raise money for club activities and club equipment by selling candy, hatching eggs in the club incubator, and many minor activities. The boys have taken an active part in district and state activities. They entered the egg and apple grading contest and won the district egg grading contest, thereby representing District One at the state contest at Trenton. They also participated in the Hoard's Dairyman dairy cattle judging contest and plan to take part in the state contests in the spring. In March the Washington F. F. A. played host to District One for the Annual F. F. A. rally. These boys have also carried on soil testing, blood testing of poultry, caring for orchards, and many other agricultural activities. The Creed of the League reads: The members of the Junior Classical League covenant to hand on the torch of classical civilization in the modern world. Mrs. Bowers, Mary Becker, Mary Conroy, Lois Spangenberg. The purposes of our club are many. We learn the fundamentals of librarianship, help the librarian in taking care of the library and encourage our fellow students to use books more efficiently. One accomplishment this year has been the assuming of responsibility for the library for two periods each day. We entertained the faculty at Christmas time. We ourselves have had several pleasant social events. The success of the library is due, in large part, to the conscientiousness of each club member. Press Club Under the guidance of Miss Jensen and Miss Bierman the students in the Press Club assemble the school news which appears in The Washington Stai each week. They collect and submit news of club activities and articles to publicize social events of the school such as dances, parties, and money-raising campaigns. These students have gained valuable journalistic experience through the Left to Right: Dorothy Fowler, Miss Bierman, Jean Walsh, Joyce writing of their weekly articles. Games and social activities such as parties are held at regular monthly meetings. Two technicolor movies were shown. The primary purpose of La Alianza Espanola is to supplement classroom work so as to increase the students’ interest in the subject and to provide various materials which promote efficiency in the language and add general knowledge of educational value. Typing Club The Typing Club, under the direction of Miss Bierman, is composed of students who wish to learn to type but are unable to fit typing into their regular schedules. LM Our Underclassmen While the responsibility for running most of the school’s activities rests upon the seniors, few projects would be successfully completed without the loyal cooperation of the underclassmen. Their influence is felt in various ways. The annual Soph-Frosh Frolic, held in November, provides an opportunity for fun and for the election of a king and queen of good sports. The classes raise money by various means and contribute a specific amount to the Cache fund. Once in a while an entire service club is made up of underclassmen. This page is devoted to them—as we see ’em and appreciate ’em. The Outdoor Club is an organization open to all girls who arc interested in all types of sports. One regular business meeting and one social meeting are held each month. Members look forward to their monthly social meetings, which include hikes, picnics, swimming and skating parties, scavenger hunts, and the like. The sports enjoyed are: fall—hockey, soccer, speed-ball; winter—basketball, volleyball; spring—softball, archery. There is a point system under which the girls receive the following awards: 500 points—numerals; 1000 points—6-inch W”; 1500 points—a charm. The senior class genuinely appreciates the generous contribution made by the Outdoor Club to the yearbook fund. Many thanks, girls. The purpose of the Varsity Club is to promote good sportsmanship. Its membership is open to those boys who have earned their W” in a sport. The members of the club who are graduating this year received sweaters if they had earned at least two letters during their high school career. These boys industriously sold candy to the student body, the teachers, and their families and friends to raise money for their club fund. Part of this was used to buy their sweaters, and a generous portion of the money was donated to the support of the Cache. They have our sincere thanks for their help. We started the season by losing the first five games but then went on to show we could win by taking five out of the next six. We reverted to our original form and dropped the next four, but appeared in the winning bracket again in four of the next five. The most cherished wins of the season were the one and two point victories over our traditional rival, Hacketts-town. Another thriller was the 35-32 victory over Bel-videre which clinched the Little Three” championship for Washington. We again participated in the Northwest Jersey Interscholastic League along with five other teams. Our squad finished in a three-way tie with Belvidere and Clinton for second place. [66] Alma Mater Dear Washington High School, the sound of thy name Inspires us to deeds great and true; We will stand for the honor and add to the fame Of thy colors the white and the blue. Every swift flying year our love will impart New luster in manifold ways, To the name now enshrined in the innermost heart Of thy children here singing thy praise We have striven for thee on the floor and the field; On the platform we’ve argued with skill To uphold thy bright name and thy honor to shield. And we'll ever fight on with a will. And in gain and in loss as one body we’ll stand For the fair and the square and the free; And through dark and through bright we will e'er be a band To the uttermost loyal to thee. — Julia Meaker [67 ] [68] Thin chronicle of our lives as seniors is a brief record of those activities which, together with our classes, have enlisted our time and effort for a year. The co-operation, imagination, humor, and hard work involved in successful hitfh school achievement have prepared us who graduate from Washington Hi rh to meet the future boldly and to say with assurance that in industry, in agriculture, in the home, we are ready to assume our individual and collective resitonsibilities.
