Donald Sinkway, Daniel Schafer, The Student Council is a group of student representatives chosen from all homerooms and student organizations. It is through the council that the student body may express its complaints, views, and desires. The regular meetings of the council are held on the third Wednesday of every month, and special meetings are called when necessary. Some of the projects undertaken by the Student Council were: the panel salvage campaign, the planning of assembly programs, appointing sentinels for sports events, and the discussion and selection of the school seal, voted on by the student body. The Student Council was authorized by the student body to submit a resolution to the town council protesting against the proposed location of a saloon on the main street. „ , 4 . . . _ , In November, ten of our students attended a convention of the State Association of Student Councils at New Brunswick. These students gave oral reports in Student Council meetings and submitted written reports in the school news of The Washington Star. One idea derived from these reports. and put into immediate use, was the mid-term election of the home room representatives. By this means homerooms were enabled to insure efficiency of representation on the council. The Student Council Executive Committee Meets Traffic Guides The duties of traffic guides are to keep congestion and confusion at a minimum in the halls while classes change. Nice balance! Try doing this some time! Football The football team of W. H. S. 1944 season can best be characterized as one that never quit. After a heart-breaking 0-0 tie with a very average Bangor H. S. team in the first game, our varsity came through with flying colors. The success of their spirit and effort can be seen by the way in which they defeated their strong rival contenders: Hackettstown, Roxbury, Wilson, and Morristown High Schools. Washington was very proud of overcoming the latter, a Group III school. The first undefeated grid team at Washington High School scored 228 points—the highest in the school's history—against 34 for the opponents 0 Bangor 0 25 Nazareth . 7 25 Roxbury . 0 20 Morristown . 7 35 Hackettstown 33 Newton 7 33 Wilson 0 57 Wharton 6 228 34 First Row, Left to Right—Dominic Fucci, Russell Riedel, Lewis Baldwin. Parties are planned, such as the one at Christmas time which proved such a great success. Presents were exchanged and as for the food—well, you just ask a member! It is affiliated with the National Society of Spanish clubs and has drawn up a formal constitution in the native language. Its motto is: “Poco a poco se va lejos” (Little by little one goes far); its flower is the madreselva; its flag and coat-of-arms are those of Mexico, our nearest Pan-American neighbor. The regular monthly meetings provide for diversified programs, including dramatizations, competitive games, and purely social parties, such as those held at Christmas and on Valentine’s Day. The primary objectives are increased cosmopolitanism, fluency in Spanish conversation, and the widening of pupils’ interests and abilities. Dramatic Club Stage Manager RUTH GRABNER Publicity Manager MARION COCHRAN Business Manager JEAN SPANGENBERG The Dramatic Club was planned on a three fold basis this year. Under the supervision of Miss Jensen, the members undertook the study of acting, stagecraft and stage make-up. The acting group, through oral reading, and critical analysis by its members, attempted to learn and employ the basic principles of good dramatics. The stagecraft members studied the designing of stage sets, and the entire club met to learn the fundamental rules of theatrical make-up. First Iiow, Left to Right — Patricia Berry, Doris Hoffman. Varsity Basketball The Washington High School basketball team scored few wins this season. The club was composed of new material with just two returning lettermen, Jerry Blanche and Norman Boehm. Fred Hahn, Frank Hassemer, Frank Clamer, Jack Julian, Art Schaare, and Ernest Zelbacker took their places to make up the remaining positions. We lost our first eight games to teams from larger schools—Easton, Wilson. Somerville, Annan-dale Reform School, Phillipsburg, and Easton Catholic—before defeating Clinton High in the North Jersey Central School League. The boys could never seem to get rolling, and a poor showing in the league clashes resulted. Lettermen who will return next year are— Schaare, Zelbacher, Hassemer, Julian, and Clamer, so we think our cagers should do a little better. A very big schedule was taken on by Washington's quintet, twenty-two games in all. Though the number of wins was low every player was given a chance to perform. Successful Mat Season This year the Blue Streak grapplers completed a very successful season in which they won I I of their 13 meets and scored 364 points against their opponents' 117. The two losses were at the hands of the powerful Newton team and the ever-strong Navy Plebes. Highlights of the season were the defeats of Kingston and Forty Fort, both schools in Pennsylvania. The former boasted of 17 successive victories. A full team was entered in the State Tournament at Roselle Park, with six of our men placing in the finals. Of the six, Pete Perini, Howard Tice and Mike Fucci placed first in their classes, and Walter Worrall, Russell Riegel and John Dellavedova held second place. Washington relinquished the State Championship to Roselle Park by a margin of two points, 30-28. We were proud to have Mike Fucci, veteran of four years, receive the trophy for the most outstanding wrestler in the tournament. The Future Farmers of America have the motto: “Learning to Do. Doing to Learn. Earning to Live. Living to Serve. Through the cooperative activities of the chapter, such as buying chicks and filling emergency farm labor calls, the members learn the principles of cooperation and fair play essential to the Future Farmers of America. The Builders Club The Builders Club was or ganized to provide additional shop experience for students with an interest and an aptitude for mechanical and woodworking activities. One of their projects was the making of canes for the American Red Cross. These articles were to be used by disabled war veterans. The club has 20 members. Two members are now serving in the armed forces; Jack O'Connor in the Navy, and Reno Guidi in the Army. Baseball—1944 Coach Joe Steinhardt's varsity nine gave a fine exhibition last season by winning eleven games and losing only four. Some fine hitting performances were turned in, particularly by Dom Fucci who hit over .400 and Ken Lobb who batted .345. Pete Perini had charge of the mound duties and was placed on the All-County Team. Others players who did creditable work on the diamond were Mike Fucci and Jack Julian, in the outfield, and Jerry Blanche at first base. New boys will have to be trained by Coach Steinhardt to fill the positions vacated by graduating players. These include Buck Mattison, catcher; Ken Lobb, second base; Nick Fiore, outfield; also Reno Guidi who was called into the armed service at the end of the 1944 football season. The four returning lettermen, with other experienced players, should turn in a fine record this season, and Joe Steinhardt can always be depended on to produce a fine squad. The Color Guard This year we instituted in our school a number of new activities which we expect will become school traditions. At our Armistice Day assembly on November I I, when tribute was paid to our graduates who had given their lives for their country, we opened the services with the formal entrance of the flag attended by a color guard. Ernest Zelbacher, honorably discharged from the Navy, carried the colors. His guardsmen were Raymond Koestner and Donald Sinkway. The assembly stood at attention while Duane Bath played To the Colors. When returned servicemen have visited their alma mater they nave acted as guest flag bearers and guardsmen.
