sut s E N A T O R S i dMu_ h- 3 GC 977 202 EA7AN I960 ■ rf ' ly fl ' ' aM- ' ' h DEDICATED TO the outstanding students of Washington High School, and in particular to those students who have excelled in the four important aspects of school life - CHARACTER, LEADERSHIP, SCHOLARSHIP, SERVICE. To these the 1960 Senior ANVIL is dedicated. ANVIL 60 WASHINGTON HIGH i pri « SCHOOL OU R CREED To acquire self-control and self-reliance. To co-operate with others for the welfare of my school, To develop in myself an appreciation of the finer things of life; To be loyal to my school in thought and word and deed, and to give her always of my best efforts. To be conscious at all times that I represent my school in every word and act; These things will be my honest endeavor as a student in Washington High School. .i  tl ' CHARACTER LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP SERVICE H A trait that a leading student must possess is good CHARACTER, for CHARACTER is probably the most important single quality that a person can possess. By strengthening CHARACTER, our school is producing students with high moral standards. 1 One important, though underlying, purpose of our school is to afford every opportunity for the development of a student ' s ability of LEADERSHIP. Through the many extra- curricular organizations here at Washington High School the potential leaders of our country are trained and developed. H SCHOLARSHIP is the primary attribute for which the students of Washington High School strive. The faculty and administration of our school are fully aware that it is of the utmost importance to develop this very essential quality. SERVICE of the loyal students of Washington High School is an important element in our school ' s reputation and its benefits. The many who give SERVICE willingly, with no thought of personal gain, deserve the wholehearted thanks of the Washington High School student body. The unselfish giving of time by these students has made our school respected throughout the Calumet Region and has provided the students with a well-rounded, full, meaningful program of activities. ' - -j w tfj olm Cy. ox PRINCIPAL The theme of this year ' s Senior ANVIL - CHARACTER, LEADERSHIP, SCHOLARSHIP, and SERVICE - is in harmony with the objectives of Washington High School. I compli- ment the yearbook staff on the selection of this theme. It is my fervent hope that the members of the graduating class and the future classes are possessed of these traits as they take their places in the life of our comrri unlty and nation. S24 MR. STACIA SKRENTNY PLEWA Sponsor We of the Senior ANVIL Staff, with the help of our sponsor, Mrs. Piewa, have worked since September to present to the graduating class and the others of Washington High School a Senior ANVIL which would portray the past year that they have spent here at school. To get out a book of this kind takes the untiring efforts of the entire staff. All of us who worked on the book — putting it together, financing it, delivering it — sincerely hope that you enjoy this Senior ANVIL. The large 9 X 12 newspaper has undergone more than just a change in outward appearance. Edited by John Gustaitis, Rich Mestrich, and Mike Goodman, the new SENATORIAL has many unique features eagerly awaited by the entire student body. The Guest Editorial is one of these, as are Dust Around the School, The Voice of Washington High School, Danny ' s Dope, and Your Editor Speaks. Even the financial arrangement of the SENATORIAL is different this year, as the students of WHS are provided with an in- teresting, informative newspaper, jam-packed with pictures, for only five cents. This year under the sponsorship of Mrs. Roger Casey and Mr. Mitchell Baran, the SENATORIAL has made some of the longest strides in its history. SENATORIAL SPONSORS l-r: Mrs. R. Casey, Mr. M. Baran. This year ' s gridders, coached by Jules Siegle, Alex Sarkision, Marty Quinn, and John Arzumanian, compiled a record of seven wins, one tie, and one loss; as a result of this record the team finished the season as the eighth ranking team in the state. Following is a resume of this year ' s season: WASHINGTON 39 - MUNCIE CENTRAL 13 ... Our Senators opened the season at Muncie Central and showed the boys from the North Central Conference just what type players are raised in East Chicago. Percy Hunt scored 3 touchdowns as our team scored an easy victory. WASHINGTON 52 - T. H. WILEY 7 . . . This was the best offensive game that Coach Siegle ' s lads played all season. Percy Hunt and Ron Smith raced through the Red Streaks ' defense to score 5 touchdowns. The Senator linemen, headed by All-State selection Jim Bakos, Vilnis Celms, Lou Ferencz, Lou Olah, and Ray Mamula, also made an impressive show- ing as they held the opposition to one touchdown. WASHINGTON 32 - HAMMOND CLARK 7 . . . Hammond Clark was the next victim of our gridiron machine. The Pioneers were completely baffled by the single-wing offense which Coach Siegle so successfully employed; consequently they were not able to contain our light-footed backfield. WASHINGTON 26 - MICHIGAN CITY 20 . . . The Red Devils from City gave our Senators their hardest game up to this point. Washington was trailing by a score of 20-19 with less than three minutes to play when Quarterback Eli Zak hit Percy Hunt with a short pass, and Hunt promptly ran for a 59-yard TD, thus enabling our squad to preserve their un- defeated record. WASHINGTON 27 - GARY MANN 6 . . . Jules Siegle ' s boys held a slim halftime lead of 7-6 against the Horseman, but put on a second half burst of speed as Ron Smith, Percy Hunt, and Eli Zak all broke into the scoring column, thereby paving the way for the fifth consecutive Senator victory. WASHINGTON 39 - WHITING 13 . . . Whiting ' s Oilers battled our undefeated football squad to a 13-13 halftime tie, but ran out of steam in the second half as the Senator ground attack, sparked by Richey Rodgers, clic ked off four straight TDs. WASHINGTON - HAMMOND HIGH . . . Bernie Krueger ' s young charges met our second-ranked speed merchants on a water-soaked field in a game that had already been post- poned twice because of inclement weather, and played their greatest game of the season. The Wildcat line held our speedy backs in check throughout the rainy evening and as a result emerged with a 0-0 tie. WASHINGTON 38 - HAMMOND TECH 6 . . . Still dis- appointed by the scoreless tie that they had played against Hammond High, the Senators took out their vengeance against High ' s neighbor, Tech, as they routed the tigers by a final count of 38-6. Percy Hunt scored four times on thrilling dashes of 26, 53, 43, and 47 yards. WASHINGTON 12 - ROOSEVELT 20 . . . The Brown Derby wasn ' t the only thing that was at stake in the traditional Roosevelt clash this season. The winner of the contest would also be crowned the Western Division Champ and would thereby receive the right to face South Bend Central ' s Bears for the State Title. Although our crew fought hard, they were not able to prevent the fast breakaways of Rider speedsters Fred Byron and Frank Stiglitz and were forced to accept their first and only loss of the season. Most onlookers felt that the Senators of 1960 would have a somewhat mediocre season due to the loss of last year ' s out- stands. However, this year ' s Senator team proved these pessim- istic followers to be wrong in their predictions, as the team fin- ished the season with the first STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WHS ever had, climaxing the Western Division Title, the East Chicago Holiday Tourney Championship, and a record of 28 wins and 2 losses. Our squad played most of the best teams in the state dur- ing the regular season and were victorious for the most part, losing only to two Gory outfits, Roosevelt and Tolleston, by the slim scores of 75-71 and 60-51 respectively. Included among the better teams which our cagers defeated were Jasper, a southern powerhouse that fell 69-61; Elkhart, who was soundly trounced 79-34; and Valoaraiso, a team which our gang beat by scores of 55-45 and 63-50. The Senators ' two slimmest victories came against the Mighty Men of Chicago, Dunbar, and the Tigers of Indianapolis, Crispus Attucks. Coach Baratto and Company squeaked by the Chicago five, 56-52, and edged Crispus Attucks, defending State Champs, 52-50. The Solons didn ' t play all squeakers though; their offense really clicked during the ten-day period that ran from January 22 to February 2. During this period, Divjak southpawed all sorts of corner shots; Cantrell zeroed in his bullet-like 25-footers; Dawkins countered on his snaky drive-ins; Lamar tallied often with his unorthodox jumpers; Rodriguez began popping them in; and Bakos and Williams scored on a variety of close-in hooks and tip-ins. As a result of this sensational shooting the Washing- ton Machine ripped Hammond Tech 91-62, Michigan City 92-63, Froebel 95-75, and Hammond High 88-33. Having acquired an 18-2 pre-tourney record and ranking fourth in the final UPI poll, the Senators were faced with a task of overcoming a much improved Hammond Tech Quintet in the first game of the sectionals. Tech ' s tigers played their greatest game since they had won the STATE TITLE in 1940. The final score was 54-50, with Bobby Cantrell, who sank 9 of 18 shots, gaining credit for the victory. The second contest with Griffith was close during the first half; but our Senators, sparked by Ron Divjak, who hit 21 points, pulled away in the second half and emerged with a 57-42 win. E. C. Roosevelt was the next victim as they fell before the hands of the eventual STATE CHAMPS by a final count of 60-48. Divjak again netted 21 points. Highland, the people ' s choice, was pitted against our five in the Sectional Finals and forced to accept only their second defeat of the year as they were overwhelmed by the hot shooting of Divjak (22), Lamar (16), and Cantrell (15). The final verdict was 83-66; the first lap of the STATE march was successfully completed. Virgil Sweet ' s Valparaiso Vikings were the afternoon op- ponents of the Solons in the Regional. Phil Dawkins, who was plagued with the flu during the preceding three weeks, appeared to have made a complete recovery as he notched 30 points in the 79-60 shellacking. The Regional finals found Gary Roosevelt, one of the two teams that beat us during the regular season, as our adversary. The lead wavered back and forth during this great cage battle, but because of the Senators ' sterling team ef- fort, the Panthers were repulsed by a score of 60-58. The road was getting tougher all the time. Lafayette did not prove to be a detour for the Calumet en- try this year as it had in the past. The Senators edged Logans- port and their fabulous Dan Farrell 66-59 in the opening contest and then ripped Covington, the winningest team in the state, 77-51. Indianapolis was finally reached after a journey of eight nerve-wracking games. Coach Baratto must have wanted to hide all his offensive and defensive devices from Muncie ' s Bearcats, who were 102-66 victors over luckless Bloomington in the open- ing afFair. Our boys defeated Fort Wayne Central by only one point, 62-61, in one of their poorest played games of the year. The final game was a different story, however; the Senators, angry at themselves for their afternoon blunders, bounced right back to club Muncie ' s first ranked, undefeated, and unanimously favored quintet 75-59 and to bring the Calumet Area its first STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in 20 years and Washington High School its first STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in the History of the School. WRESTLING TEAM This year ' s wrestling team, ably coached by Alex Sarkisian, fin- ished the season with a respectable 4-4-2 record; but the tearr really hit its peak during the Conference Meet. The Senators placed First in their own Western Division and finished Third in the Conference, Maurice Rodgers and Richey Rodgers became Conference Champs, and Don Kielbasa and Dennis Kucinski snatched Third Place Honors. Kenny Anderson also made a creditable showing as he took a Fourth Place. Three of these fine Senator matmen — Maurice Rodgers, Richey Rodgers, and Don Kielbasa — continued in their winning ways and grabbed Sectional Crowns, thereby qualifying for the Regional Meet. Maurice Rodgers was the only member of this trio that emerged vic- torious from the Regional competition, as Richey Rodgers was upset, and Don Kielbasa had to settle for a Third Place position. Maurice then advanced to the Finals at Indianapolis and finished the season undefeated. He won the State Title and acquired the points which accounted for the Senators ' fifth place State Ranking. They decided (as we hope you will decide) to let Inland Steel Company help them plan their future. Some are gaining knowledge and experience in spe- cial trades to become journeyman machinists, car- penters or electricians . . . some are concentrating on certain phases of steelmaking by working in the open hearth shops, the cold rolling mills or the galvanizing lines. Still others are working in laboratories building a sound foundation for a future in steel research. Inland offers the high school graduate an excellent opportunity to further his education. Employees may participate in a variety of on-the-job training pro- grams, or they can continue their formal education by registering for evening courses offered by local Purdue and Indiana University Extension Centers.
