The administration realizes that the selection of a proper course is a most important and significant step. For this reason the following courses are offered at Washington High School: College Pre- paratory, General, Homemaking, Business, and Trade and Industry. OUR STORY In June 1899 the second graduating class of East Chicago High School hod only three members, one less than the preceding year. Those graduates attended a school very different from any East Chicago school today. More than likely they had begun their studies in a two-room township high school which stood at 145th and Northcote. In 1898 the students moved to the Tod Opera House because the city had taken over the high school building. East Chicago grew; and when a town grows, the high school must also grow. The small space in the Tod Opera House became unbearably overcrowded. A new high school for East Chicago was to be built! The building, dedicated in 1900, still stands; however, today it is Harrison School, an elementary school. The Indiana Harbor side of town began growing, so in 1903 the building of another school began. 1908 found the building completed and ready for use. Today that building is the Washington Elementary School; but in 1908 it was East Chicago High School. In 1918 an addition between Hemlock Street and Parrish Avenue was started, and completed in 1921. 1925 found the city needing another high school. Since there were to be two high schools, there could no longer be an East Chicago High School. The older one, on the Indiana Harbor side, became Washington High School; the new one, on the west side, was named Roosevelt High School. Washington High School Auditorium and Gymnasium were added in 1924. To complete the high school block, the modern addition on Parrish Avenue was built in 1939. Our new physical education and cafeteria build- ing was dedicated on November 21, 1956. The remodeling of the auditorium was completed in 1957. We ore proud of sixty-one years of the best in high schools— Washing- ton High School of East Chicago, Indiana. ,- - MR. JOHN P. FOX PRINCIPAL i! MR. CARL E. JOHNSON ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OUR PRINCIPALS What are the criteria upon which one judges a good school? Certainly the school must have a teaching staff with the knowledge of the subject matter and the methods of presenting the material. In addition they must have an understanding of the boys and girls in their classrooms. The school must have several curricula so organized that the needs, interests, and abilities of the students may be con- sidered. Good facilities in an atmosphere where learning is encouraged are also necessary. Washington High School, I am sure, meets these criteria on al counts. I am both proud and happy to be its principal ffohn fP. 9o. Mr. Chorles J. Esolo Secretory Mr. Thad M. Dywan Treasurer Mr. James A. Melyon President Mr. Irving L. Lewin The year that has just passed has seen this appointed school board put into effect many beneficial ideas in our school system. One of their important actions was the selection and appointment of Mr. Dan Simon as Superintendent of Schools after the retirement of Mr. Alfred E. Senour, our former Superintendent. Education is in the hands of the educators to make our graduates rank among the best in the country. Mr. Royal H. Byron Mr. Dan Simon Superintendent of Schools Mr. N. T. Memories of them remain long. Students easily and readily express their personalities and talents in the extra-curricular activities. At Washington High School students ore offered many types of activities. Each student chooses those which he enjoys most. Our varied activities are a large and important part of life here at Washing- ton High School. 54 •i ••If I I i lilt .V r 9S i 55 LUCY CORONA MICHAEL GOODMAN JOHN GUSTAITIS JOSEPH KOVICH DIANE PORTER DON POZYWIO DOROTHY SAMIS DAVID SUBAN MICHAEL SUNNY PATRICIA TILLOTSON MRS. STACIA SKRENTNY PLEWA We will do our best to turn out a good Anvil, and we will co-operate to achieve this goal. Suppose we peek into Room 21 3A and catch our Anvil StafF at work. That nervous woman running up and down our office is Mrs. Plewa, the sponsor. Mrs. Plewa assumed the responsibility of seeing that all the work is in before the deadline— and that ' s no easy job. Following close on her heels is Michael Sunny. Mike is a co-advertising manager. He and his staff made the lives of merchants miserable until they bought space in our Anvil. In one corner of the room we see little slips and dol ' ar bills flying about. No cause for excitement; the Anvil subscription solicitors are turning in the money— that ' s all. That isn ' t machinery you hear; those are the overworked brains of Dave Suban and Dorothy Samis as they work on the under- classmen section. Sitting with a dazed look on her face is Lucy Corona, our secretary. If you listen closely, you can hear her mum- bling something like this— Checks for this company. Receipt for Mr. So and So. Must get this letter out. Poor Lucy. Banging away on the typewriter is Pot Tillotson. Ready to take over when she collapses is Diane Porter. Pat and Diane are working on the activity section. Squeezed just inside the door are Don Pozywio and Joe Kovich, our sports writers. John Gusfoitis and Michael Good- man, our photographers, have just returned from snapping pictures. Well, that ' s the Anvil staff. Except for a few gray hairs, we ' re none the worse for wear. But how well we ' ve done our job— that ' s up to you. We did our best. The paper has been making advancements, but this year we believe the Senatorial is at its best. Anne Lazar and Loui ' Trikolas, co-editors, and Anne Nedeff, assistant editor, have done a fine iob n meeting the deadlines. The Senatorial and the school owe much to the sponsors, Mrs. Vann and Mr. Baron, for their efforts and assistance in guiding the staff. They have demonstrated their mental ability not only in the classroom but also in the valuable contributions they hove made and the service they have given to Wash- ington High School. Their record at Washington High School indicates the future accomplishments v e can expect from them as they become leading citizens of their city, state, and country. Porter, S. Munez To be a member of the National Honor Society is an honor most seniors strive for. The George Washington Chapter has been in existance for thirty-three years, and this year has twenty-nine members. To qualify for membership one must rank scholastically in the upper third of the graduating class. Scholarship alone is not enough, for the senior must display good character, honesty, achievement, reliability, leadersh ip, and a sincere desire to act in the best interests of the school. Celms, T. Furticella, R. Mamulo, G. Moloion, W. Cunningham With the oncoming of fall the football season was in full swing. But this year we were at a loss, for we had lost one of the greatest coaches, Mr. John Zitko. With the loss of our old coach, Assistant Coach Jules Siegle, who had worked closely with Coach Zitko, took over the job of fashioning a mighty team. Helping him to fill the many starting positions that had been vacated were Coaches Quinn, Sarkisian, and Arzumanian. Our team had one of the largest lines in the Conference; this played a big factor in most of our gomes. Although our team as a whole did not do great, thev hod some of the best players in the state. In our first game of the season Percy Hunt and Delroy Bridgeman led the team to a crushing victory over Indianapolis Washington. Our line showed what it could do with our combination of good coaching and teamwork. Guard Bill Reichart recovered two fumbles which later turned into touchdowns. We lost our second game 18-13 in the final min- utes on a touchdown drive by the big Muncie team. However we hod our moments of glory with Ed Kersh and Tony Furticella showing spectacular ability. The third game of the season was highlighted in an 18-0 victory over Whiting. Lorry Momula and Tony Furticella played heads-up bail, which gave us an easy victory. With our Homecoming just around the corner, our school began getting ready for the big weekend. The parade started off the gala week with the dance after the game the next day. This year Frobel was our attack. Our whole team played their best and beat Frobel 32-14. Bill Reichart, our hard fighting guard, was crowned Mr. Football; and Judv Ba- busiak became our Homecoming Queen. Now our sights were set on Hammond High; to beat this team would mean State recognition. Our team fought hard and tried their best but it wasn ' t good enough. The final score was Hammond High 14, Washington 0. East Chicago Roosevelt, the lost gome of the season, i? to be remembered by all. Roosevelt won 14-0 and kept the Brown Derby, the most prized object in the city of East Chicago. Thanks goes to our fine coaching staff and also our team for a fine year. All the way through the season our team was sparked by the six returning lettermen. When the state started polling the teams, Washington was never below second place. Most of the time we were tied with the hard fighting Muncie team. Our team started out by beating everybody that it played by a large margin, until it played Gory Frobei. The Frobei game will long be remembered by us all, for it was our only loss in the regular season. This year we still held the Western Division Champion- ship, which made Washington a favorite to win the Sec- tionals and Regionals without any difficulty. The team hod very little difficulty and did win both with ease. A big event for the Regionals was that the evening session was to be televised. This was just the answer for those fans who couldn ' t secure tickets. Washington played such a great game that night that everyone picked them to win the State Championship. But an unsuspected, keyed-up, ballhawking team from La- fayette played a controlled ball game and upset the overpowering Senators to win the afternoon opener by a score of 56-52 in a heartbreaking ball game. 90 Mike Ard Larry Mamula Jim Bakos Nick Berzac Robert Cantrell Phillip Dawkins Ronald Divjak John Dow Darrell Williams Santos Jiminez Pete Auksel, All State 91 OUR BENCH STRENGTH B TEAM BASKETBALL Ist row l-r; A. Coach Sarkision had a big job to do, for this year only seven of lost year ' s squad returned. As the season went on, he had trouble with many of the Varsity boys getting sick, but he did a fine job. Individually we had 5ome of the best wrestlers in Indiana. Two of our boys advanced to the State Finals, Richie Rodgers, 175 lb. weight division, placed second in the state; while Maurice Rodgers, 155 lb. division, placed third. Don Kielbasa won fourth in the Regional?; Don Shawver won third in the Sectionals; Tony Furticella placed third in the Conference and third in the Sectionals; and Richie Rodgers won first in the Conference. Our team lost 6 matches, four by only one set; but they went on to win four matches. The team beat East Chicago Roosevelt both times the teams met. The Senators left the courts with a 4 and 6 record. Both our fine tennis team and Coach Sarengach are congratulated. Golf at Washington High School is only two years old. Coach Molodet had to start from the very bottom to build this team. He has done on excel- lent job. If we are to judge by the past two seasons, we can see that Wash- ington High School will hove excellent material for the next few years.
