WESTERN DIVISION VA R SIT Y F Q 0 T B A L L CONFERENCE CHAMPS The leaves on the trees turn brown and fall, and there is a pleasant nip to the air. Yes, it's fall again and the football season is drawing near. This is the time when students forget their studies in order to sit on long, hard benches and yell themselves hoarse for their favorite team. VVith the coming of fall, the students waited impatiently for the unveiling of the Senator eleven. The Washington Senators, under the training and leadership of Coach John Zitko and his two Capable assistants, line coach Julius Siegle and backfield coach Marty Quinn, almost made it two state crowns in a row. The Senator machine, composed mostly of seasoned veterans from the previous season, had its first team made up entirely of seniors. Dan Holland and Art VVilliams were the ends, George Brokemond and Lou Fox, the tacklesg Sanford Wilson and Phil Toth, the guards, and Harry Korotky Covered the center spot. Many of the area coaches said that this was one of the biggest and fastest lines in the state. In the backfield, Dave Olah was the field general, 5. with Norman Comer and Lou Costa the scat- backsf' and Vernon Keyes the Hline-busting fullbackf, Due to the ability of these boys to play both offense and defense. there was only one substitution when Albert Jackson Came in to play defensive halfback for Dave Olah. The Senators who won four consecutive games without being scored on, were well on the way to the fifth in the Hammond Tech game. This was not to be, however, because with only 59 seconds left in the game, which Washington was leading 54-0, Hammond Tech scored a touchdown. After playing five teams Considered weak, the Senators took on Ham- mond High, Hammond Clark, and the tough cross-town rival, East Chicago Roosevelt. The annual Brown Derby game, which always holds the promise of a good game, was one to remem- ber. The Rough Riders put up a stubborn de- fense and held the Senators to only one touch- down. The Senators put up an even tougher one and held the Rough Riders scoreless, thus capping the regular season in a blaze of glory with a hard-fought victory. Front: R. Perry, D. Perry f moo Row 1: L. Coach Baratto VARSITY BASKETBALL SCORES had only one returning regular. Nick Mantis: but. boys like Norm Comer, Lou Costa, Rudy Smith, George Stepanovich. and Art W'illiams had plenty of experience. The team got off to a shaky start this year because Coach Baratto tried to find a starting combination that worked well together. After moving boys from one position to another. he finally came up with the following starting quintet: Mantis and Stepanovich at forward positions. XVilliams as jumping center. and Comer and Smith at guard positions. After this combination got started. the Sena- tors started their victory drive and did not stop winning until they wrapped up the Western Division Conference championship.
