This depart- ment includes history, civics, commercial geography, government, economics, and sociology. A study of these subjects makes possible a better under- standing at conditions that exist, and it is hoped, will make an improved society ot the future. O MUSIC is a very interesting field tor young men and women who tind pleasure in self-expression. The music department of Washington High School attracts hundreds of students every year who seek the enriching ex- perience at participation in bands, orchestras, choruses, and glee clubs. Thus they receive technical training in a vital subject which gives them poise and self-confidence. 17

O TWO YEARS of study in either Latin, French, or Spanish are offered at Washington High School. ln that time a pupil secures a cleorer under- standing of phrases, references, and allusions that are found in books and other publications, ln this way a greater appreciation of literature is gained. O LANGUAGE is the basis ot learning. To give the student the power of self-expression, to cultivate taste in the choice of reading material, and to set forth a means of acquiring knowledge are the aims of the English department. 16

O GOOD HEALTH is an important factor in a happy and successful life. Proper exercise is vital in the quest for health. Realizing this fact, the physical education department offers a program whereby every student can get the benefit of athletic training.
