This is done throught the building of ideals, the teaching of principles, and the developing of ability to apply them. Today, the people living in our great cities face conditions that can be understood and mastered only through the study ot nature at second hand, preferably through the natural science courses in our schools, under experienced teachers. O TWO YEARS of study in either Latin, French, or Spanish are offered at Washington High School. ln that time a pupil secures a cleorer under- standing of phrases, references, and allusions that are found in books and other publications, ln this way a greater appreciation of literature is gained. O LANGUAGE is the basis ot learning. To give the student the power of self-expression, to cultivate taste in the choice of reading material, and to set forth a means of acquiring knowledge are the aims of the English department. 16
