0 HOME ECONOMICS is o subject in which young people are given proper instruction so that they may achieve success in making homes in which they will be happy and make others happy. This is done throught the building of ideals, the teaching of principles, and the developing of ability to apply them. I THE SUCCESSFUL WORKING ot our democracy depends upon the educa- tion of the people. An educated person is one who understands and is able to control his surroundings. Today, the people living in our great cities face conditions that can be understood and mastered only through the study ot nature at second hand, preferably through the natural science courses in our schools, under experienced teachers. General mathe- matics gives the student an opportunity to observe the part it plays in our everyday lives. O TWO YEARS of study in either Latin, French, or Spanish are offered at Washington High School. ln that time a pupil secures a cleorer under- standing of phrases, references, and allusions that are found in books and other publications, ln this way a greater appreciation of literature is gained. O LANGUAGE is the basis ot learning. To give the student the power of self-expression, to cultivate taste in the choice of reading material, and to set forth a means of acquiring knowledge are the aims of the English department. 16
