Various other types ot' lettering ineluding italies, liothie, and Roman were originated by the serihes. The early printers based the design of their first types upon this hand lettering. The Huinanist nioveinent of the llenaissanee encouraged the scribes to devote more time to temporal doeninents. For this purpose large copying houses were established and the work became soinewhat specialized. The serihe eopied only the aetual text. The illuniinator filled in the initial letters and illustrated the pages, and another Workman bound the book and orna- niented the Cover. ln these 1lltll1llSQ1'l1D'C books were preserved the writings of many Greek and Roinan authors, whose works otherwise would have been lost to us forever.
