FEIK Superintcndcnt of Schools llid you know that the seed from which W'ashington High School grew, first sproutcd in the lb90's'! lt was then a. township school and served the tow11s of Hammond, Whiting, aml East Chicago. W. C. Bel- ton was its first superintendent. ln 1896 East Chicago organized its own school at the Todd Opera llouse, but it was still a township school. In 1897 the East Chicago High School was established. Mr. A. G. Slocomb. the present purchasing Agent of the East Chicago Public Schools, was thc first principal of the high school. lie served from 1898 to 1903. Other principals of our school have been respectively, Mr. Kline 1904, Mr. J. E. Newell 1905-1907, Mr. H. H. Clark 1908-1922, Mr. T. E. Williams 1922-1925, Mr. lt. W. Feik 1925-193-l, and the present incumbent, Mr. R. F. Robinson. The name, Washington High School, was taken when Roosevelt became a high school in 1928. From this humble beginning has grown, in a comparatively short time, a large public school system whose enrollment alone would make a small city. Its employees include a number of principals, teach- ers, technical and clerical workers, and janitorsg and it comprises plants and equipment valued at over three million live lmmlred thousand dollars. The East Cllicago system of public schools is guided by competent and well informed men. The schools are administered by a superintendent and a board of education. The board is composed of three members appointed by the city council to serve for a period of three years. The board represents the t-axpayens and parents in all matters regarding the education of their wards. lt handles matters per- taining to finance and housing, and co-operates with the superintelmdent in defining educational policies and setting up educational standards. The superintendent is the chief administrator. He defines the educational policies and with the assistance of the assistant superintendent, supervisors, 'and principals, sees tuat these policies are car- 1'ied out, and that the system functions efficiently. Voeational offerings cover shop subjects such as printing, electric shop, auto shop. drafting, machine shop, and wood shop. The honie economics department ot't'ers courses in cooking, sewing, home decoration and honieinaking. Business subjects in- clude in addition to stenography, typewritiug and bookkeeping, courses in business training, coinmer- cial law, and comptonietry. A comprehensive music program is carried out, offerings consisting of a glee club, band. and orchestra. Sketching, layout and design, lettering and handicraft are taught in the art department, The physical education department carries out a corrective and health-Iniilding pro- gram, and also presents an opportunity to every pupil to participate in sports, either varsity or intramural. Pupils contribute to the administration of the school. Service organizations composed of pupils of good citizenship and scholastic standing, formulate and carry out policies concerning student affairs. The Student Government governs the student body in matters pertaining to student welfare. The Girl Counselors guide and advise the younger girls in dress, deportnient, and conduct. The Washington Brothers give the same service to younger boys. The Boy Patrol co-operates with the student gov- ernnient and with the local police in lnatters of safety and law and order. Monitors check passes in the halls. guide strangers and visitors around the building, and act as messengers for the office and in- structors, The Junior Red Cross is in charge of the benevolent and charitable work of the student body. Pupil assistants help in the library. the offices, cafeteria, bookstore, and clinic. A Student Club Com- mittee directs the recreational activities of the school. Plans have been laid for the future expansion of the plant at NVashington High School, and will be undertaken as soon as financial conditions permit it. The next unit to be added is an industrial building which will house the music, art, and shop departments that are hampered because of inadequate space. gmmmmi scmmmm
