FEIK Superintcndcnt of Schools llid you know that the seed from which W'ashington High School grew, first sproutcd in the lb90's'! lt was then a. township school and served the tow11s of Hammond, Whiting, aml East Chicago. W. C. Bel- ton was its first superintendent. ln 1896 East Chicago organized its own school at the Todd Opera llouse, but it was still a township school. In 1897 the East Chicago High School was established. Mr. A. G. Slocomb. the present purchasing Agent of the East Chicago Public Schools, was thc first principal of the high school. lie served from 1898 to 1903. Other principals of our school have been respectively, Mr. Kline 1904, Mr. J. E. Newell 1905-1907, Mr. H. H. Clark 1908-1922, Mr. T. E. Williams 1922-1925, Mr. lt. W. Feik 1925-193-l, and the present incumbent, Mr. R. F. Robinson. The name, Washington High School, was taken when Roosevelt became a high school in 1928. From this humble beginning has grown, in a comparatively short time, a large public school system whose enrollment alone would make a small city. Its employees include a number of principals, teach- ers, technical and clerical workers, and janitorsg and it comprises plants and equipment valued at over three million live lmmlred thousand dollars. The East Cllicago system of public schools is guided by competent and well informed men. The schools are administered by a superintendent and a board of education. The board is composed of three members appointed by the city council to serve for a period of three years. The board represents the t-axpayens and parents in all matters regarding the education of their wards. lt handles matters per- taining to finance and housing, and co-operates with the superintelmdent in defining educational policies and setting up educational standards. The superintendent is the chief administrator. He defines the educational policies and with the assistance of the assistant superintendent, supervisors, 'and principals, sees tuat these policies are car- 1'ied out, and that the system functions efficiently.
