He is just away. With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, He has wandered into an unknown land And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he lingers there. For the second straight year the powerful Albion High football team racked up another Twin Valley Championship, and a 35 rating in UPI polls. Led by All-Stater and Most Valuable Player Rick Burlingame, and 3 year starter Bill Keller. The team, which was one of the best the school has ever had, compiled a 7-1 record, losing only to St. Johns, who eventually became state Champs. The coaches, Ivan Muhlenkamp and Ken Foust, must be given much credit for bringing the team along, a team which placed 9 men on the All- Twin Valley squad. We salute Albion High's mighty football team. 5 Ivan Muhlenkamp, Ken Foust Co-Captains: Rick Burlingame and Bill Keller x P V A Phil Pesch Guard Bill Keller Guard J eil Merrild Guard I-,ff-I l ,J 'Yi' je, 21, , M my .11 4, , . f. i Q, I gb 946 -.- G Chip VanSchoick H alfback Craig Rustenholtz Tackle Gil Johnson Quarterback Chuck Knickerbocker Frank Whittum Tackle Dave Stellingworth Fullback End I I Isaiah Bogan Quarterback Scott Robinson H alfback Frank Collins Center - Bruce Higgins H alfback YL 'J John Reeves Center esewfe Football Row 1 - G. Coming on strong at the end of the season, the Wildcats shared the Twin Valley Championship with Hillsdale. In tournament play the Wildcats de- feated Marshall in overtime after losing twice to the Redskins during the regu- lar season, to become district Cham- pions. In the regional tournament Al- bion went into overtime play once again, this time losing to Coldwater in an exceptionally close game. Row I - J. Bridges, D. Heisler, S. Wheelerg Row 2 - L. Jones, P. Under the direction of a new coach, Kenneth Foust, the squad has had a fine year, considering it had only four letter winners back. Coach Foust, plans for tennis at Albion in the future are many. A new reserve squad was formed this year. One main plan of Foust's is to start a summer tennis program at Albion, in order to get many more boys to go out for tennis. The eighth grade is a stimulating year in high school. It is a year when most stu- dents learn to assulne responsibility in carrying out their assignments. They also learn that cooperation and courtesy are essential qualities they must utilize to achieve success. And of course, besides the usual homework or the problems in math, most students find that the pleasant social atmosphere of Albion outweighs the homework. Los Buenos Vecinos El Club de Los Buenos Vecinos under the supervision of Mrs. Mildred Ford and leadership of Vladimir Hirscht, President, Connie Dickmeyer, Vice-President, Jan Slick, Secretary, and Mary Ford, Treasurer, had a very interesting and enriching year. Highlighting the year's activities were the delicious Spanish dinner, spiced with the hot Latin dishes, and intriguing films of Mexico, shown by the Dickmeyers and Kathy Baker and those of Brazil, presented by Anna Mattar, exchange student. Christmas, Navidad, was celebrated with true tradition at the home of Nan Strohmenger. Throughout the year two groups of members were initiated with the usual antics. As is customary, the spring picnic ended the year with many good memories. Every member thoroughly enjoyed the educational and memorable year. r 4 x . N in -ig. Row 1 - Miss Ross, D. Holcroft, J. The Albion Math Club is a chapter of the National High School Mathe- matics Clubs, Mu Alpha Theta. This organization hopes to reward sound scholarship in the math field and to promote enjoyment of mathematics. The National Association operates on both the High School and Jr. College levels. Mu Alpha Theta grants charters to clubs and publishes a monthly news- paper with news of the clubs organized, suggestions for programs, puzzles, and quizzes. Students who have completed Algebra I with a B average are invited to become associate members. Full members must have also com- pleted two semesters of Geometry. Cindy Hume served as President until recently moving. Her duties were assumed by Tom Abendroth, the Vice-President. Donna Holcroft is the club Treasurer, Jane McAuliHe the secretary, and Earl Cook, the Sergeant-At- Arms. After each meeting a program is presented by one of the members of a guest speaker. Guests have included: Mr. Ashdown, Mr. Muhlenkamp, and several speakers from Albion College. Until this year the Math Club members operated a tutoring service, but adequate interest was not shown in the project this year. Mu A412114 Them Row 1 - J. With the rapid growth in scientific technology today, high schools across the United States are intensifying their science programs to meet the needs of present conditions. Albion's science department is no exception. Both students and faculty alike are expanding their knowledge of science by de- veloping interest among the student body. The Biology, Chemistry and Physics students are fortunate to have a club which encourages individual, as well as group participation in the sciences. Bi-Phi-Chem members have participated in a number of activities which promote the aims of their club: To help students understand fundamental theories, to perfect skills, and relate science to everyday living. The topic debated this year was Resolved: That the Federal Government should adopt a program of compulsory arbitration of labor management in basic industries. The Future Nurses' Club is a resourceful organization which un- fortunately is losing ground at Albion High due to lack of participation. Teaching the fundamentals of nursing is only one part of the Nurses Club, as members learn the responsibilities expected of them and the vastness of the nursing field. Co-op is a means by which in-school education combines with the on-the-job training to prepare for future full time employment. Local business and in- dustry participates by employing in- school students part time during the school year. The emphasis is on train- ing that the student receives that is consistent with his career objective. Our program involves training in Dis- tributive, Office, and Trades occupa- tions. Distributive occupations include retailing and service groups. Students employed in Distributive areas are working in department stores, restaur- ants, food stores, service stations and drug stores. The office occupation stu- dents are working in business and in- dustry preparing for careers as secre- taries, typists, receptionists, and filing clerks. The trades are diversified. The nursing program at the hospital is in the T8zI group. Other TSLI training areas include auto mechanics and draft- ing. To qualify as a trainee, the student has to be employable. This means that the student should have the necessary course background while in school. The trainee has responsibilities similar to full time employees where he is em- ployed. The trainee is paid an hourly wage which varies with each employer. Besides being paid, the trainee receives one credit toward graduation. At the end of the school year, the student re- ceives a certificate of achievement that can be used as a reference for future employment. hr laws LSE' Nur .mf Learning Produce Operations in the super market. Eight ex- cited girls, and a whole school, waited expectantly for the half-time crowning of the Homecoming Queen. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors were all proud of the floats that class effort had produced, and were eagerly waiting to display them. Finally, the long-awaited half-time began with a fine program presented by the band. Following the music, the three class floats rolled on to the field to the cheers of their builders. The sophomore float, an old-fashioned washing machine, titled Wring out those Johns lead the way. Next came the junior float, K.O. the Gaels . The Senior float won the prize for the best Hoat with their large 1'Gael-otine. Excitement grew as the four convertibles carrying the eight charming candidates for Queen and their escorts circled the field. The court included Mary Chauncey with escort Jim Streeter, Linda Fraser with escort Howard Lentz, Rosalie Kanengeiter with escort Dave Kubicek, Mary Lou Konkle with escort Warren Hepler, Barb Johnson, with escort Dave Steffe, Sharon McAuliffe with escort Dick Porter, and Merrily Young with escort Greg Pulling. It was then that Shirley Vitale was announced as Homecoming Queen 1965 and was crowned by Principal Harry Williams and presented with the traditional bouquet of roses. Radiant Queen Shirley and her court reigned over the annual Homecoming dance at the Albion Armory following the game.
