A basketball and football coach, naval resewist, and junior high school principal - all these are a part of Ordell W. McElhaney. This year the Breeze Staff wishes to dedi- cate the 1965 annual to Mr. McElhaney in appreciation for all that he has done for our school. Mr. McElhaney resides at 11100 29 Mile Road with his wife Clayone and his son Doug, a senior at Albion High. His daughter, Claudia, is presently a senior at Albion College. Mr. McElhaney was born in McDonald, Pennsylvania. He attended school at Louisiana Tech., Adrian College, and graduated from Albion College in 1939, receiving his Mas- ters Degree from Albion in 1961. After entering the naval service he became a Lieutenant-Commander and officer of a supply transport in the South Pacific during WW II. He remained a member of the naval reserve and was able to treat the faculty at Albion to a ride on a naval vessel on Lake Michigan last fall. An avid sports fan and participant, Mr. McElhaney is constantly involved in some athletic event. For many years he held the position of Athletic Director at Albion but gave it up to take over the job of Junior High Principal in 1960. Besides having been a football coach, he also led an Albion basketball squad to the state quarter-finals in 1949. The staff and students sincerely express their apprecia- tion to Mr. McElhaney for his fine leadership and guidance at Albion High over the years. Princibczl McElhczny Provides L66ld,67 5b? Much credit should be given co-captains Bruce Gilbert and Paul Gardanier as well as coaches Fritz Lewis and Ivan Muh- lenkamp. The team's most valuable player and boss of Kelley's Krew, Jim Kelley, made the All- Twin Valley squad and All-State for the season. A truly fine record is boasted by our Varsity grid-iron team. They turned in an un- defeated record with seven wins and no losses under the leadership of co-captains Joe Com- fort and Dave Egnatuk. Halftime festivities began with a review of the three class floats, followed by the band and the Queen's Court. As the girls circled the field in convertibles, the- Senior Band played the Broadway hit Hello, Dolly. The Court, consisting of Barb Anderson, Betsy Baldwin, Jean Bormann, Bonnie Gas- kell, Elizabeth Gray, Joanne Hilborn, Char- lene Johnson, and Jennifer Rumsey, and their escorts Dennis McCune, Grant Iverson, Paul Burstein, Nathan Dickmeyer, Doug McEl- haney, Ken Miller, Bob Whitehead, and David Dice formed the cross bar of a large A made of band members. They are in charge of the elections and cars for the court. The Christmas Formal this year was Fantasy in Frost featuring Johnny Spears and the Stac- catos. This was one of the most successful formals in quite a few years and everyone attending en- joyed a fine evening. The council receives its money from Book Store profits and uses this to buy items and sponsor activities for the students and faculty. Officers for the council this year were: Nate Dickmeyer, presidentg Bruce Gilbert, vice-presi- dentg Jean Bormann, secretaryg Phil Pesch, treas- urerg and Dick Underwood, sgt.-at-arms. 62 Student Councils Heuct Activities uuu' Leuu' Students The Junior High Student Council was an ac- tive phase of student government this year. Two dances were sponsored, one in November and one in May, both of which were very successful. Also the Council took part in the annual Open House, acting as guides for the parents who visited the school. On March 2 the annual 'Teachers' Tea was held. A gathering of over one hundred and fifty teachers and principals of the Albion area attended, making it a very successful affair. During the months of February and March, the Council held a tardiness contest among home- rooms. The object of the contest was to try to cut down the number of tardinesses in the junior high. . - The officers of the Council this year were: Junior president, Mark Johnson, vice-president, Joe Young, secretary, Julie Young, treasurer, Lynn Morris, and sergeant-at-arms, Barry Young. :QQ I 3 Row I-M. They've entertained Mr. Jean Nougier, a French professor at Albion college, who spoke to the club about teenagers in France. At Christmas time the group went carolling, singing, of course, only French songs. Initiation took place in the spring with new members having to recite to earn their place in the club. The annual picnic was also held in the spring, and the delicious food was prepared from French recipes. The officers for 1965-66 were elected at this time. The club was advised by Miss Janice Ross and was under the guidance of the following officers: president Nancy Pettersen, vice-president Ingrid Johnson, secretary Pat Wilson, treasurer Jane Dooley, and sergeant-at-arms Elizabeth Gray. They have enjoyed various speakers such as the public health nurse and have taken field trips to the University of Michigan's School of Nursing, the Foote hospital in Jackson, and Sheldon Memorial hospital here in Albion. Again this year they have performed such civic duties as making place mats and favors for the hospital at Christmas. This year the club had twelve members who were advised in their activi- ties by Mrs. Elinor Hart. Highlighting this year's activities were the Raduga dancers, the Minneapolis Philharmonic, and the University of Michigan's annual May Festival. Two candy sales, as well as other money-making activities, helped to raise funds for the annual spring trip. This year the club went to the Mam- moth cave-Kentucky bluegrass area. The Tastemakers' club had a very successful and exciting year under the direction of advisor James Theisen. This year the 'cats finished the season with 14 wins and 3 losses. Ronnie Wilson led the team in scoring and made a good showing at every game. Both Ronnie and Karl Wilson were named to the all-conference team. Although many of the boys will graduate we can still expect a lot from our Varsity and Reserve teams next season. Willie Tabb, sophomore, scored 241 points for the team this year and also led in rebounds with 182. Willie moved to the Varsity squad at the end of the season and saw considerable action on the court during tournaments. Much credit can be given to the coach this season, Mr. Ivan Muhlenkamp and co-cap- tains: Bob Gray, Jim Lackey, and Willie Tabb. With a team such as this assuming positions on next years Varsity Team Albion should continue to control JV standings for several years. esewfes Remain U ndwazted Albion 61 56 60 60 73 49 67 59 73 58 76 76 55 64 79 73 Scores Parma Coldwater Marshall St. Johns Hillsdale Parkside Harper Creek Three Rivers Coldwater Sturgis Parkside Marshall Hillsdale Harper Creek Sturgis Three Rivers Opponent 48 35 41 43 56 45 39 41 44 49 51 60 50 46 49 57 Mat-Men Place Second in League Row 1-M. Moving from a one win-nine loss season of last year to a season that saw the Wilcats win four, lose five, and tie two meets. The team finished second in the league this year by virtue of their dual meet and tournament records. The team climaxed the season by placing fourth in regional meets and sending three wrestlers, Chuck Miller, Mike McCall, and Bob Butler, to the state finals. Chuck Miller, captain, led the team with a 28-3 record and went on to place second in the state finals. Scores Albion Opponent 6 B. C. Proof of this statement was very evi- dent at the Class B State Swimming meet held in Ann Arbor this year. The team was able to score 35 points against twenty-six other very capable teams. The 35 points resulted in a twelfth place finish. Part of the credit for the success of the team goes to John Campbell who proved himself an outstanding captain, leader, and swimmer. The team will miss John and senior Rick Reynolds another outstanding swimmer. With nearly all of its members back next year the swimming team ex- pects even a better season than it had this year. Under the direc- tion of Coach Don Ashdown and Captain Scott White, this year's squad has an im- pressive season to boast. The two top runners on the team, Scott White and Dave Kubicek, qualified for the state meets this year. Scott has also set a new school record for the two-mile course - ten minutes, nine seconds. We look forward to much more interest and improvement in this competitive sport, and it will surely become one of Albion,s best. Seniors-Don Day, Chuck Miller, and Scott White. 96 Cross Countr rash Basketball The Freshmen Basketballers were coached by Jerry Redding this win- ter, a new addition to the coaching staff at Albion. The team ended their season with a five win - four loss record. Two games were cancelled because of weather. They started the season slow but had a good finish, winning four out of the last five games. Being their first year of competitive basketball the boys lacked height and experience. Leading scorer, rebounder, and playmaker was Terris Wilson, a 5' 11 forward guard. These boys will be providing the backbone for next year's Reserve squad. Freshmen numerals were awarded to: Terris Wilson, Mark Johnson, Phil Johnson, Dennis Heisler, Gary Selent, Tim Warren, Dennis McMillan, Lynn Ralston, Larry Andreas, Jerome Bridges, and Gary Yokum. -f 'Y 'Hyip fs' ff K Cheerleaders Support eezms and Promote Spirit J 'U 'v..4inrL:w.f' Jenny Rlunsey A Linda Fraser 98 Varsity Sheila Jones, Jenny Rumsey, Linda Fraser, Sharon McAuliffe, Mary Chauncey, front-Joanne Hilborn Joanne Hilborn, captain Sharon McAuliffe, alternate 1-k Sheila Jones Mary Chauncey Nancy Sibal wma..--we L valve'-aff ' s X SJ, ' V A ,X we-r. v..,. qv,-W, ' .W .. if MWmN7Wh'WM M 'Mm 'i1ie'W '-rwwilfwlh J' Reserve Joyce Thomas Storme Rlmlsey Hanny Pannekeet Margaret King Nan Strohmenger Julie Young, captain an YRS? Varsity Club The 1964-65 school year has been exceptionally active for Albion High School's Varsity club. Last fall they took on the duty of printing the high school football programs which were furnished at our home games. Their autumn activities also included a late-November hayride. During the winter they sponsored the traditional Red 8a White basket- ball game, the proceeds of which went to buy new shoes for the team. They were also in charge of the annual Senior-Faculty basketball game after the end of the regular season. Much of the extra money earned by the club was used to buy badly needed athletic equipment or was put into a special fund for a football scoreboard for the new school. Heading this year's club along with advisor Mr. Fritz Lewis, were president Ron Isaac, vice-president John Campbell, secretary Bruce Gilbert, treasurer Tom Stone, and sergeant-at-arms Karl Wilson. The' club's purpose is to enhance sportsmanship and interest in ath- letics. The membership is composed of letter-winners in any of the school's various sports activities. They are: Ray Campbell, Jim Harmon, Kenneth Faust, and Fritz Lewis. Mr. Ellsworth Anderson was moved from Head Football Coach to school Athletic Director with the appointment of Fritz Lewis to his coaching position. Albion High's coaches can certainly boast fine records for all sports activities this year. We will continue to look for good guidance from our coaching staff to make champs in every field at AHS. The object of the National Honor Society shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to pro- mote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the students of Washington Gardner High School. Under the leadership of advisor Michael Berry, the club also planned several outings. In Novem- ber they went to the Fisher theatre in Detroit to see the new musical Oliver! . Also the club had several parties, one, a cast party after the second night of Dino',, at the Berry's, and a second for the entire club and new members at the home of Barbara Johnson. The play, given in the evenings of May 7 and 8, concerned two New Yorkers, Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas, who accidentally stumble on Brigadoon, an eighteenth century Scottish village. A wedding is about to take place between Jean McClaren and Charlie Dalrymple. Tommy and Jeff, after some confusion, enter into the spirit of the day. This is enhanced by Tommy's attraction to Fiona, J ean's sister. The wedding takes place, but tragedy shadows the occasion. Fiona and Tommy, by now deeply in love, part, because the price of remaining together seems too great. How love reunited them across the gulf of two centuries was the moving finale of this enchanting tale. Tia. About three years ago baseball was changed from a Spring sport to summer competition at area high schools. This was to offer boys the opportun- ity of competing in four sports each year rather than three. The Wildcats placed third in the Twin Valley league last summer with a record of twelve wins and eleven losses. Dave Sarcharski led the team in batting this year and was an infielder on the all-conference team. The baseballers are coached by Albion's Recrea- tion Director, Jerome Sarcharski. Because of the interference with summer jobs, many of the boys who would like to play baseball are unable to go out for the team. It is hoped that more students will take an interest in the team and come out in full support next season. Seniors Exchange Studemj Eduardo Mattmf fl' Each year, Albion High welcomes foreign exchange students participat- ing in the Youth for Understanding Exchange program. Sharing in our school's scholastic and extra-curricular activities this year, is Eduardo Mat- tar, who hails from Rio De J aniero, Brasil. Eduardo has previously lived in Colon, Michigan before coming to Albion. He now resides at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Young, head of the exchange program. A student of many capabilities and possessing an interest in a variety of subjects, Eduardo finds life in the U. S. quite similar to that of his native country. He particularly enjoys sailing, soccer, volleyball, and philosophy, literature, classical music, and political science also keep him intrigued. After one more year of high school in Rio De Janiero, Eduardo's am- bition is to attend college and become an economical engineer. Albion's best wishes go to Ed throughout his future and our thanks for a better understanding of our teen-age neighbors. xi m 5'W90miga,,,n M-ff 397' ,Sw -1 . A special note of thanks goes to our advisor Mr. William Terrell for all his work. Most people would not realize all the work involved in putting this publication out each year. The picture taking is just the beginning to paste- up, stories, lay-out and a lot of time. Much credit should be given to Cindy Reichow and Sharon McAuliffe. Cindy did all the excellent drawings used on our division pages while Sharon is our advertising manager and worked hard to get the ads for our Breeze. We hope that in the future years more interest will be taken in the annual and paper by students so the Breeze will continue to grow and improve. Best of luck to next year's stall and editors.
