Also an unusual combination. Moving to Albion in 1950 tor his tirst teaching iob he has been a member ot the taculty tor tourteen years. ln addition to his regular teaching duties Mr. Harrison has been advisor to the annual and paper statts, personally supervising all Breeze yearboolcs and newspapers. ln l954 the annual was also dedi- cated to Mr. Harrison. A man ot varied interests he has appeared inseveral productions at the Civic Theater in Marshall, Michigan and taken an active interest in all sports. A native ot Detroit, Mr. Harrison attended Al- bion College tor tour years where he received his Bachelor ot Arts degree. I-le turthered his education by earning his Masters Degree at the University ot Michigan. During the summer the Harrison's plans include moving to Setauket, New York on Long Island. where he will teach English and possibly journalism. .dl Malce Valuable Albion Curriculum A high school choir direclor who does coaching on lhe side-a ralher unusual combinarion. Albion High School has been exrremely lorlunale 'lor The pasl live years in having such a man in Philip Sleen. The inilialion ol musical produclions has been a major conlribulion by Mr. Sreen. Under his direc- lion such celebraled hils as The Mikado, Good News, Plain and Fancy. and Carousel, were produced. Abolishing lhe Girls' Glee Club and forming Three separale choirs has been anolher maior change insliluled by him. Such an aclion was necessary ro provide an opporlunily for all lhe in- leresled sludenls lo ioin choir. lvlr. Sleen, in his shorl career al Albion, also inilialed a Boys' Glee Club and direcled 'rhe Ensemble. Born in Lalayerle, lndiana, lvlr. Sleen allendecl grade school and high school on The campus of Weslern Michigan Universily, where his lalher is a professor. l-le earned his Bachelors and lvlaslers degree ar Weslern. An avid sporls fan, lvlr. Sleen also lalces inleresl in lhearer arls, all forms ol music, and people in general. They went on to set new records in scoring. The team set a record for the . local gym when they bestecl Harper Creek, 97- 46, then set the Twin Valley record, scoring 104 against Coldwater. The squad succeeded in be- f coming the first team in league history to score y over lOOO points during a season. To close the season Albion won its first class A trophy in the districts at Jackson, Michigan. Darryl Wheeler was high scorer with a total l of 378 oints. Ron Wilson had 344 and Mo Varsity p ore- 1 head ancl Miller led in rebounds, with 257 and 237 respectively. Miller and Chatman were first in assists with 94 and 90. As a way ot acquainting teachers with council members.they entertained the faculty at a tea. The elected otticers were Milne Pickens, president. Greg Smith, vice-president, Paul King, secretary, Keith Van Schoiclc, Treas- urer, and Ken Morehead, sergeant-at-arms. Again as in previous years, Mr. Donald Ashdown and Mr. Ellsworth Anderson were the Club's advisors. In October a dance was held aT The Parlcer Inn tor all club members and Those persons who were on The tootball and cross-country squads. Steve Morgan and Dick Brauti- gam debated negative against Detroit Rosary High School at Ann Arbor. They received an emphatic three to nothing decision to cinch the title and bring back the trophy. Under the supervision of Mrs. Ethel Fleenor, the debators also topped the Twin Valley during seasonal competition. Posting a 13-5 over-all rec- ord, Albion won dual decisions over Hillsdale, Marshall, Sturgis, and Coldwater. The five losses came from splits with Battle Creek Central, Battle Creek Lakeview, Lansing Sexton, Jackson and East Lansing, all large schools included in Albion's schedule so that valuable experience could be gained for the tournaments. ln the districts they made a five win-one loss showing in the six rounds at Kalamazoo. David Rammelkamp and Steve Morgan won affirmative contests over Grand Rapids and Jackson. The topic debated this year was Resolved: That the federal government should provide es- sential medical care for all citizens at the public expense. Participating in competition debates this year have been Steve Morgan, Dick Brauti- gam, David Quebbeman, David Rammelkamp, Sally Huvendick, Nancy Zick, and Nathan Dick- meyer. Many students also competed in spring speech contests.
