fi to Q. is R J, --! 1, , ings Senior Class Votes Newell Good Citizen Co-Editor of Annual Gets D.A.R. Award Phyllis Newell has won the 1948-49 D.A.R. citizenship award at Albion high school. She will compete with other high school D.A.R. citizens at a state meeting, the winner of which will receive a S5100 savings bond and a trip to Washington, D. C., for the na- tional convention. The D.A.R. winner was selected on the basis of dependability, ser- vice, leadership, and patriotism. The senior class voted recently to determine the A.H.S. girls of out- standing citizenship, and from the three highest choices, a faculty committee made the final selec- tion. During her three years at Al- bion senior high school, Phyllis has been co-editor of The Breeze annual, business manager for The Breeze, play and Junior Ex., advertising manager for The Breeze and the Breeze play, and a member of A Club, Honor So- ciety, Thespian Club, Senior High Council, Future Homemakers of America, and Recreation Board. E. Tuthill Reigns As Football Queen Ellen Tuthill, senior, was elect- ed Football Queen for 1948 by the football squad. Sandy Woch- holz named the Queen at the dance after the Marshall game, Novem- ber 5. Ellen is president of the A Club, and a member of the Honor Society, Latin Club, Usher's Club, Chapel Committee, and Senior High Student Council. After she graduates, Ellen plans to attend Michigan State College, where she will major in Home Economics. The football team voted for its queen Friday, November 5, during conference period in Mr. Gray's room. Practically a unanimous vote gave the honor to Ellen. Barbara Schaible Has Poem Accepted Congratulations are in order for Barbara Schaible, senior, who had an original poem accepted for pub- lication by the National Anthology of High School Poetry! The poem entitled Harmony, will appear in this annual edition of the Anthology. Upon being asked why she wrote it, Barbara replied, I write poetry for some- thing to do. 'fHarmony was accepted by the Anthology December 4, 1948. Honor Society ups Members In Assembl Valedictorian, Salutatorian Chosen In an assembly held last Mon- day morning, Iive juniors and ten seniors were tapped for the Na- tional honor society. Phyllis New- ell was named valedictorian and Ellen Tuthill salutatorian of the senior class. The new members of the Hon- or society are: juniors, Sue Carter, Jean Ford, John Gilbert, Russell Graves, and Lois Sheffieldg sen- iors, Charles Anderson, Katie Bournelis, Betty and Nancy Com- stock, Jean Davis, Robert Good- all, Yvonne Griffin, Frances Hawes, Pat Henke, and Don Klein. Membership in the National Honor society is based on the qualities of scholarship, leader- ship, character, and service. An- other qualification necessary for membership is that the student shall have attended Albion high school for at least one year. Sev- eral faculty committees select the members. Tapping of new members was done by the old members, June Charlier, Sallee Fox, Katherine Kowalchuck, Phyllis Newell, Stan- ley Swanson, Ellen Tuthill, and Harold Wochholz. Juniors Work As Exhibition Draws Near by June Charlier- Shh. . . ! Do not disturb! The junior class is at work. Members of the set, props, costumes, and many other committees for Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, are working industriously as the 19th of February draws closer. That's the big night. Further details on the Jr. Ex. may be found else- where in the issue. One of the largest jobs behind the scenes is that of the business manager, Phyllis Newell. Also un- der her direction is the job of pub- licity. Stage Manager for the play is Victor Ball, with Roger Miller as his assistant. In charge of light- ing is Charles Howell, assisted by Frank Bushinski and Bob Traut- man. Polly Baldwin and Jean Klimovich are responsible for sound effects. Chairman of the costume com- mittee is Kay Van Gorden. Also on the committee are Kendall Bed- ient, June Charlier, Barry Ew- bank, Yvonne Griiin, Connie Mur- ran, Phyllis Palmiter, Shirley Vin- son, Betty Wallace, and Phyllis Ann Williams. Elizabeth Davis is chairman of the small props committee, which consists of Austin Bitney, Dale MacDonald, and Frances Sawdey. Large Props committee is headed by Mickey Malott, with Margaret Ackley, Elwood Jacob, Jean Klim- ovich, and Mary Paniccia as assist- ants. Dale Claucherty has charge of the set, assisted by Betty Com- stock, Tony Egnatuk, Dick Geyer, Wayne Husband, Katie Kowal- chuck, Don Nash, and Lyman Win- chell. Make-up is headed by Ellen Tut- hill, and assisted by Betty Com- stock, Audrey Dryer,.Emmy Fin- nigan, Beverly Husband, Mary Lou Lamphier, Betty Murphy, Doris Romans, and'J'ean Wigner.
