III HSAH EWIEIIM ,W AW Sgmhnlimn The Coat-of-Arms of the Prince of Wales is the foundation of the EX Libris of our book, showing three feathers expressing good thought, good words, and good deeds. The copyright, picturing the Winged Wheel, is sym- bolic of success. The peacock, a bird symbolizing magnificence and pride, adorns the entrance to the book-the title page. Various birds adorn the division pages of the book and symbolize their section of the book in the following manner: . Administration Eagle Dominion Faculty Eagle Power Seniors Owl Wisdom Juniors Love Birds Affection Sophomores Wren Thrift Junior High Stork Children Activities Birds in motion Athletics Cock Victory Jokes Crow Mockery Business Directory Carrier Pigeon A So We find that symbolism is the deeper meaning possessed by words and things. The more symbolic a thing the more eifect it will have and our bird friends are symbolic of every virtue of life. The general iniiuence of symbolism has been for the exclusive, the refined, the delicate, and the beautiful. It is the language of heraldry and suggests something higher than the eye. 1 Do you ne'er think what wondrous beings these? Do you ne'er think -who made them, and who taught The dialect they speak, where melodies Alone are the interpreters of thought? I -Bryant. Throughout all time nature has always appealed to man, and the bird, perhaps natures most beautiful creation, carries the greatest appeal. In the minds of mankind the bird is a creature of mysterious power. The tales of old and the fables of the peasants of today relate many strange miracles by the winged folk of the world. The bird has been included in myths and legends and it has been used as national emblems. History 'is replete with stories of birds as important figures in the worldis development. Down through the ages it has been used for enrichment of man 's clothing, his utensils, his shelter, and combined with his religion- aibeautiful link With' the mystic flight of time, a messenger into- the blue horizon, a graceful flash of upward color toward the heaven. Perhaps, because of the bird's power of flight, its winged direction toward the heavens, the bird has been used as a symbol ofthe future. Symbolism is as old as humanity. Man 's earliest reply, when Without audible speech and written language, has been symbolic art. 'Symbolism enriches every form of human expression and adds to the joy of living. And in order that our book,,might be instructive as well as beautiful the birds themselves have furnished the symbolism represented on our art pages. The winds were hushed, no leaf so small At all was seen to stir: VVhilst tuning to the water's fall The small birds sang -- and from their fairy-like music we gained this bit of symbolic wisdom. 4 Illllll ' uta iai. lilllll ' um, ir Ummm miiul i mlmlili I ' il I'l I l.nIlf , iii annmw i lllfmfnm imii 'c ' t llll
