Will we still be dreaming about this next year? e signage www DEDI CA TIO We, the Seniors of 1954, are dedicating our yearbook to Mr. Romani as a token of gratitude for the able way he has assisted our class on the road to success Mr. Romani was not only a capable teacher, but he has served as our class adviser for the past four years. Many times we have become discouraged and ready to quit, but he has always been ready and eager to help us. We know that our Prom would not have been the huge success it was if it had not been for his expert guidance. Despite his many outside activities, Mr. Romani has always found time to lend a helping hand. His willingness to help has been an asset to our class, and we are taking this opportunity to say 'Thank you.' l I FIRS.T ROW: H. Bratcher, G. Funk, E. Bxadle, A. Brennenmeyer fsec.D. SECOND ROW: W. In the short time he has been here, Mr. Abernathy has commanded the respect and loyalty of all students. He is a staunch supporter of all organizations of the student body. Besides tending to his administrative duties, Mr. Abernathy is a friend to those students who seek his help. He holds a B. Ed. degree from Eastern Illinois State College and M. A. degree from the Uni- versity of Illinois. MRS. LA VONE HETT Mrs. Hett, in her first year at WCHS, proved to be a very capable and efficient secretary. Her readiness and willingness to lend a helping hand soon made her a favorite with both students and faculty. You may be sure that anywhere Mrs. Hett can be found, you will find a smile. Thanks, Mrs. Hett, for all your help. Always' on the fob MR. GOLDEN BABCOOK Assistant principal and mathematics teacher are now the duties of Golden Babcook. Though small, we were well known throughout the school. Our homecoming candidate, Norma Bullock, was chosen by the entire student body to be Homecoming Queen. Her escort was Don Wagenbach, another member of the Senior Class. Although our float placed fourth, it created much interest and laughter among the crowds. We looked forward with enthusiasm to our Senior play, the prom, and graduation. Under the guidance of our officers: Bruce Swanson, Pres.g Dean Skinner, V. Pres.g Doris Grimes, Sec.g Don Shorb, Treas.g Virginia Vohland, Ralph Cherrie, Shirley Moody, student council representativesg and Mr. Romani, our adviser, we feel that our last year in WCHS was labeled a great success. .., E 1 AMBITION AND SUCCESS Marilyn Ebel is just the one to succeed. She was editor of the Panther. Her accomplishments in the Advertising Contest and the Voice of Democracy contests are proof of her abilities, She was active in chorus, band, and vice-president of the junior Class. Onward to success in journalism. George Muller's energy and efficiency will help him to make good. George was a member of the varsity football team, W Club, and an honor student. He was active in 4-H work and is interest- ed in a future in agriculture. Dear Diary, To start out on the right foot the junior Class elected its officers. The class picked Coral Ackerman as president and Norma Van Scyoc as vice-president. For secretary we chose Betty Peck and Connie Aberle was elected treasurer. These officers did a good job managing the class and we tip our hats to them. After electing these officers we chose Joyce David, Bev Smith, and Robert Skaggs to represent us in the Student Council. With Homecoming just around the corner, we decided to elect our candidate for queen. Pat Haas was chosen for that honor and although she didn't become queen, she still was a member of her court. Pat was escorted to the Homecoming Dance by her brother, Tom. The theme .for our float was, 'Duz.we win,' 'Vel I guess,' 'The Tide has turned,' and 'Lux with us.' Our float placed third. The next big project ofthe junior Class was our play, 'The Inner Willy.' It was a very humor- ous comedy and we owe its success to the very capable direction of Mrs. Hirsch and also to the many committees that helped her. The last big event of our junior Year was the junior-Senior Prom. We attribute its success to our class adviser, Mr. Brigham. He has helped us in all our projects and we are greatly indebted to him for his help in organizing the different com- mittees and seeing that we made it through our hardships. Most of the money needed to put on the junior-Senior Prom came from the junior Play and the concession stands at the football and basketball games. The junior Class wishes to thank each and everyone that helped to make the numerous pro- jects of the year successful. We re-elected Tom Adams as our president with Tom Hexamer, vice-president, Gretchen Zeigler, secretary, and Annette Esser, treasurer as his assistants. Our student council members were Marilyn Simpson, Don Messmer, and Carl Cherrie. Mrs. Hirsch, our adviser, readily helped us whenever we called upon her. Homecoming arrived and we elected Gretchen Zeigler as our candidate for Queen. We built our float with the theme 'Dragnet. Our first class event was a Halloween party with games and refreshments. Another class party was planned for later in the year. Although we all worked hard on our assembly, we had a lot of fun. Many of our Sophomore boys participated in football, basketball, and baseball. Eight sopho- mores were on the basketball squad. Now we are looking forward to our next two years at WCHS and hoping to have as much fun as we have had in our previous two years. We began our first year activities with a class meeting under the direction of our capable adviser, Mr. Ashbrook. Karen Kopp was elected our presidentg Bob Ebert, vice-president, Fred Hensey, secre- tary, and Ronnie Blumenshine, treasurer. To represent us on the Student Council we chose Inez Phillips, Bill Dixon, and Kay Herbst. We came through initiation without too much difficulty, and soon Homecoming was upon us. Even though our float didn't place, we had a good time working on it. Our pretty candidate for Queen was Georgia Woodward. At our class party we played volleyball, basketball, danced, and ate. We all enjoyed our Freshmen year very much and are looking forward to our remaining years in high school. , Q g 7 -W QXESS BW. WHISTLE WHILE YOU WORK As we, the yearbook staff of '53-'54, look through our diaries, we are reminded of the many problems that had confronted us during the past year. Our staff, through the efforts of our editors, Mary jane Ropp and Gary Camenisch, was constantly busy either pasting, writing copy, typing, or taking pic- tures. Our slogan for sales campaign was H350 by December 5. The sales were boosted to this peak by the constant efforts of the sales manager, Edith Yoder and business manager, Bill Donahoo. Always on the spot for a good picture were jim Havens, Hanan Grigsby, and Dean Skinner. As we continue in our diaries for the iforthcoming years, we will always look back on the year '53-'54 with fond memories. Without the guidance of Mr. Mat- son, our yearbook would not have been as complete and thorough. WACOHI STAF Xl L WW A Viv' vi W, if gmx . x .x -... X M - X ugx - -.9 i , , Q, Q J an ff G ' 4' M. Under the able guidance of editor, Marilyn Ebel, and advisor, Miss Ebert, the work was accom- plished sooner and done better. A lot of hard work uncovered more news about more people, including alumni and teachers. Everyone agrees that this year's Panther was bigger and more interesting. The band, led by Norma Bull- ock and maioretres, Joanne Theime and Harriet Canfield, performed a successful season of marching and concerts. The mixed chorus and girls chorus were equal- ly busy preparing for the Spring Concert and the Tazewell Music Festival. The one hundred and four girls outnumbered mixed chorus by fifteen members, which is proof of the wide in- terest raken in this field. Good luck to the music department and an- other successful year. v JUNIOR P Wiloughby Adams Inner Willy Aunt Hester Aunt Louise Aunt Olga Stanley Clark Mike Marybelle Turner Trudy Marshall Janet Marshall Carol Martin LAY CAST Bruce Castor Larry Houseman Gaye Prutsm an Coral Ackerman Zoe Rene King Ronald Naffziger Ralph Pool Camilla Esslinger Beverly Smith Karen Faubel Mary Geason UN OR PLA Y Dear Diary, Friday and Saturday, November 20 and 21- saw junior Play, The Inner Willy. It was hilarious! The plot involved 16 year old Wilough- by Adams and his three old maid aunts who are rather domineering in their interest for him. Complications set in when Wiloughby's Inner man SPPCQIS and announces that he can - not leave until he had made a Egof Wiloughby. These complications are tripled when Wiloughby Beauty Salon discovers that he is the only one who can see or hear Inner Willy. After considerable strug- gle and many laugh-provoking antics, Inner Willy accomplishes his mission and the play ends happily for everyone, including the three old maid aunts. Hard work and complete cooperation from the cast and Mrs. Hirsch, the director, as well as the entire junior Class itself contributed to the tremendous success of the play. Bruce is one of the backfield men to be lost this year, and it is aloss that will be keenly felt. CARL CHERRIE Carl, whose speed and enthu- siasm in an open field gained many yards for us this year, is only a tsophomore. With a year's experience under his belt, he will be a valuable man in the coming years. RALPH CHERRIE Ralph was one of the best men in the backfield this year. Having played all four years, he had plenty of experience and showed it with his running and passing. Ralph will graduate this year and will leave a big spot to fill. as Don played his first year mf football for WCHS and played 'W alfback and fullback. He was a good runner and seldolm failed o gain yards when given the ball Don will graduate this year and his place will be a hard one to fill. JIM EBEL Bill played as a substitute end this year. With two years ahead of him, jim should become one of the best tackler WCHS has ever had. 1 ARNOLD FAULKNER Arnold was seen at tackle this year and played mostly on defense. He was a stone wall when the chips were down and always wasfighting. Arnold will graduate this year. and whenever he was needed he came through. Quite a few of the varsity grad- uated leaving many positions to be filled. Under- studies suddenly became active and after many days of practice, Coach Van Scyoc finally found nine boys whom he knew he could rely on. The veteran pitching squad was back and proved to be the toughest and best in the Peoria Area barring none. After their win over Woodruff in the Heoria District, they went on to win the lllio Conference Championship. Following their loss in the Sec- tional, they ended up with 15 wins and 5 losses. Hit and Run For many years track has been a minor sport at WCHS. This year, though, it picked up con- siderably under the stern eye of Coach Osness. The team entered a few meets and made a good account of themselves. FIRST ROW: K. Herr: L. Housemang B. Schneiderg C. Waughopg Mr. Babcook, Athletic Director. SECOND ROW: B. Masong J. Boughang I.
