1-2- 2 1949 CLASS HISTORY Long, long ago, way back 1n 1937 when l was just a lxttle burro hardly able to stand up and hee haw, my master presented me to a gang of adventurers who had decxded that I'd make a perfect mascot for them durmg thelr Journey whlch was to begln ln Septem ber One among the flfteen had heard the saymg Go West, young man, and thought lt sounded hke a good xdea so the gentleman R D Legel by name, asked Audrey Blumen shxne, Dorothy Dlebel Ellen Heyl, Ferne Ingle, Corrmne Kamp, Claxre Mason, Betty Perry, Patt Pfeffmger, Mary Rlch joy Rlsser, Donalxne Sundstrom Rlta Thew11s Nelda Waddell and Rxchard Atterberry 1f they'd l1ke to Jom h1m you know Just tag along and keep h1m company They accepted the 1nv1tat1on and preparatxons were made Thank goodness, I was too frag1le to carry a lot of baggage 'cause there was plenty of xt Much to my satlsfactlon, some pack horses and a wagon were engaged to carry the con glomeratxon of pots, pans and blankets had passed, we had mcreased membershlp by leaps and bounds Once, I remember, we took a detour for one reason or another through Hangover Gulch and came out w1th a couple of speclmens, Iohn Wlese, and Don Ward, who augmented our group by the1r presence Numerous others added thelr mules and wagons to our already extenslve caravan What a Joy xt was for me to have occaslonally a new playmate from one of the nelghbormg mule teams come v1s1t me I recall a few of them Nancy Garmers, Moe Esslg, B111 Skmner, Bob Kxmpllng and oh yes Frances Gxllan What fun we had Some of the more talented persons were by now comxng to th foreground Patt Pfeffmger, who was somewhat a muslcxan, was forever perfectmg her skxll on an nn strument that B111 Berlett xnvented for her use It resembled, m a manner of speaklng the modern clarxnet and provmded just as sweet accompamment for the Voxces of the little clan, Rxta Thewlxs and Gene Davxes In 1945 the band, whose members had by thxs time glven themselves the name the '49ers lfor yudgxng by the rate they were going, they f1gured thexr destlnatlon could never be reached before that yearl paused a few months to recuperate before crossmg the mountams That portlon of the trip was expected to be harder than that wh1ch pre ceded, but stlll lt was awaxted wxth over flowmg anticipation Whlle camping 1n the foothills, twenty three more ploneers were accepted xnto the ranks of the '49ex:s Among these were Alma Page 30 Esders, Dale Boley, Mary Seaton, Mxldred Daum, Eula Leuthold Eugene Hartman, Genevxeve Al1g Evelyn Sprlng, and Mary and Irma Hunzlker Thxs naturally made qulte a bunch so It was decxded that some type of organ1zat1on be formed A few days after thelr tnp was resumed joy Rlsser, Don Ward Mary Rach, and Leona Kell were elected to lead the gang durmg the commg year The young clansmen began t.he1r tr1p over the Rockles w1th comparatlve quletness The whole t1me they notxced the new terram and the dlfferent land formatxons, but llttle excltement accompamed them besldes the usual thrllls of nature whxch kept l1fe from bemg dull On the way up the first slope we dzd stop 1n a town long enough for everyone to partmclpate ln a clotlung drlve long enough, even, to wxn flrst prxze for our mea ger efforts to gather old garments and shoes Agam the following year a dxfferent quadru pletof off1c1als was chosen Th1s time It Allen Andrews, and Norma McDonough the latter a recent addxtton and the fxrst red head sxnce Audrey Blumenslune The four gallantly gu1ded the caravan over the snowy peaks and rocky passes 'IL11 lt came toa llttle mountam town where a type of get together called a I-lomecomxng was mn preparatxon A parade was to be held, so after due con slderatlon on the part of the govermng staff one of our most typical wagons was entered and cut off my ears and call me a horse lf xt d1dXl,t get second prxze It was a merry oc casxon for all of us Even we ammals en- joyed watclung the dancmg and games that took place 1n the evemng At the dance our own Norma McDonough was crowned queen of the homecomlng festlvlues whxch made all the '49ers happy speclally me I was always one of her most amorous admxrers The next mormng and months afterwards we banged and bounced over the bumpy but beautlful roads, learmng more about the country we were crossmg so that whenour goal was at last reached we mxght use thxs knowledge and these experxences to make easler the capturmg of our future goals The roads were becoming rougher now, and the group decxded that an electxonof new offlcers should be held The others had done thexr duty well but neededa rest For the next and d1ff1cult lap Loyd Wenger, Ferne lmhoff, Alan Keck and Leona Kell, were mar' maglstrates We had been travelmg for a good many years now, and there were so man of us that more funds were necessary to keep the caravan m ' - L too, J n , . , . .
