Sell Tioxxse Bell House, once a reknowned Ches- tertown boarding house, Is now the Creative Writing Center at Wash- ington College. In 1985, due to the renovation of other dorms, eight student writers lived there: eventu- ally, those rooms will be used as qui- et workrooms for upperclass writing students. Bell House serves as a lit- erary meeting place, a place for po- etry readings, art exhibits, lectures, and luncheons, much in the same spirit of comraderie which sur- rounded Bell Haven. Robert Day, whose Oval Office is centrally locat- ed here, hopes that Bell House will serve a dual purpose: to provide a retreat and gathering place for stu- dent writers as well as encouraging campus-wide participation in the enjoyment of art.

At the same time, however, it shows an unwillingness on Cater ' s part to destroy tradi- tion. Whereas some college presidents might ' ve opted for the wrecking ball, Cater ' s plan reflects his attitude of preserving 1782. The renovation, costing somewhere near 1.4 mil- lion dollars, was partially funded by a grant from Benef icial-Hodson Trust, and will be re-named Cul- len Dormitory, after Thomas Cullen, a former member of Beneficial-Hodson ' s board of direc- tors. Although the project caused housing short- ages on campus, the new building is a source of pride for everyone.
