f EGASUS 1985 WAsmnezon coccegz uomcDB ax a3HTSNti SPIRIT OF PROGRESSION The 1985 Pegasus Staff dedicates this yearbook to the Spirit of Progression which, through the efforts of administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of the college, has started a new cycle in the life of Washington College. Last year, Washington College students took the initiative to demand changes, protesting the dangerous cross-walk on 213. The city agreed to provide flashing yellow lights, and this year students walk safely to class. Spanish House, which has seen many changes through the years, has found new occupants yet again. The Business Man- agement Department has set up head- quarters ng. Sell Tioxxse Bell House, once a reknowned Ches- tertown boarding house, Is now the Creative Writing Center at Wash- ington College. In 1985, due to the renovation of other dorms, eight student writers lived there: eventu- ally, those rooms will be used as qui- et workrooms for upperclass writing students. Bell House serves as a lit- erary meeting place, a place for po- etry readings, art exhibits, lectures, and luncheons, much in the same spirit of comraderie which sur- rounded Bell Haven. Robert Day, whose Oval Office is centrally locat- ed here, hopes that Bell House will serve a dual purpose: to provide a retreat and gathering place for stu- dent writers as well as encouraging campus-wide participation in the enjoyment of art. At the same time, however, it shows an unwillingness on Cater ' s part to destroy tradi- tion. Whereas some college presidents might ' ve opted for the wrecking ball, Cater ' s plan reflects his attitude of preserving 1782. The renovation, costing somewhere near 1.4 mil- lion dollars, was partially funded by a grant from Benef icial-Hodson Trust, and will be re-named Cul- len Dormitory, after Thomas Cullen, a former member of Beneficial-Hodson ' s board of direc- tors. Although the project caused housing short- ages on campus, the new building is a source of pride for everyone. £elia Hanson Pavilion Dedication ceremonies for the new Leiia Hynson Pavilion at the Washington Col- lege Boating Park took place on April 20th. The $115,000 facility, constructed with funds given Hynson by the Beneficial- Hodson Trust, is the first step in the reju- venation of the College ' s boathouse prop- erty. Now, instead of crossing the finish line at the foot of High Street, the crew teams will finish in front of the Pavilion. Among those participating in the dedica- tion were (inset) Beneficial-Hodson Trust Chairman Finn Caspersen, Mrs. Hynson, Board Chairman Louis L. Goldstein, Presi- dent Cater, and Trustee Christian Have- meyer. 1 - Casey Swim Center The pool, a gift to the college from Eugene B. Casey, was open to students on a limited basis late last fall and was open for community membership in mid- January. Now open full- time, the Casey Swim Center adds a new dimension to on- campus recreation. HHf ' j l m Bi ' - ' ' 1 fepH Bfl « H Me g ?y .ayj H!i 1 vxm THE FUTURE . . . The new academic resources center, neccesitating the closing of Gibson Avenue, is among the many new projects scheduled for Washington College. The spirit of progression exemplified in the year 1985, will continue far into the future, adding a dimension of timeli- ness to a college rich in tradition. rciBSOH m 10 FALL f4aw Faces, Old Friends .- ■ Settling In M varS Fall Convocation Featured at Fall Convocation-, William Warner, Dr. Phillip J. The young, inexperienced team won against Chesapeake Com- munity College twice, and, in early October the netters stopped Marymount College 15-2 and 15-6. These kids are learning the game of power volleyball and they are holding up pretty well. This team may be a diamond in the rough if they stick with it. — Coach Penny Fall X) The Washington College Music Department gave many recitals throughout the year, starting as early as the first week of Septem- ber. Max Apple, the first of the Sophie Kerr sponsored series, Writers and their Editors, came to campus with the senior editor of Random House, Ted Solotaroff. The purpose of the series was to provide insights into the relationships that develop in such a situation, allowing that it is both a highly subjective and highly objective field. Max, the author of The Oranging of America, read from his work on October 17th, delighting the audience with a style full of wit. HallowQQn 22 Cross Country Jonathan Adams paced the Shoreman runners throughout the cross country season, and pulled across the finish line first for Washington College in every meet. The best group of harriers in several years, the Shoreman finished the season with a 4-11 re- cord — not impressive at first glance, but they were competitive with other teams, said Coach Don Chatellier. We were never blown away by anyone, he said, And we finished the season strong and healthy. The individual themselves did well. BROADSIDE EDITORS don ' t slow down, even for a blizzard. Editor In Chief Eric Lorberer ' s goal was to have a Broadside out every week, and they came very close to accom- plishing their goal. From left to right, the editors are; Mike Rudin, Janet Harvey, Eric Lorberer, Neil Rifkind, and Jeremiah Foster. VtV- f u. J ii Walter Abish and Peter Glassgold were the second in the series Writ- ers and their Editors. They gave talks on December 2, 3, and 4. The writers and editors to follow, Gjer- trude Schnackenberg and Pat Stra- chan, Charles Wright and Jonathan Galassi, came to Washington Col- lege during the Spring semester. 39 Patience -T555 I 5. 1 ' ij-Jr ' A I l- ! J ! Christmas 1 Basketball Coach Tom Finnegan ' s basketball team made us all proud with their 16-8 season, overall, and their 9-1 Middle Atlantic Conference season. Among the titles the Shoremen brought home this season were the Western Maryland Tip-Off Tourney, the eighth annual Wild Goose Classic Tournament, and a playoff position in MAC. The Shoremen faced tough teams, but they played hard and with the kind of finesse characteristic of the team. Bob Fornoff topped the 1,000 point mark this season. 32 CheerlGaders Preparing For The Show It takes many long hours to make ready for performance, a time in which every detail must be con- sidered- lighting, props, cos- tumes, the set. The show that the audience eventually sees is a re- flection of all that went into it. Preparations usually begin a month in advance. 34 Black Hearts Ball x . j Birthday Ball It ' s tradition. Every year, tension mounts as the days before the Birthday Ball wind down. It ' s the event of the year as alumni, students, and faculty get out their cos- tume ball best and make their way to the Gym. Of course, there are the other touches that make it special — a quiet dinner with friends, flowers for the lady. 36 37 The Bakkhai Sorority Rush 39 40 SPRING Lacrosse The Shoremen put in a fantastic effort this season, ranking number one in the coaches ' poll, seeded first for the NCAA Division III playoffs, and ending the regular season with eleven wins and only two losses. No one can pretend that the loss to Hobart at Kibler Field on Commencement weekend wasn ' t disappoint- ing, but the Shoremen ' s fans still have the thrill of the win over Hobart that brought our team to the cham- pionships. Marge, a double-major (German, Drama), earned honors in both majors and had the distinction of being on the dean ' s list for each of her four years at Washington College. Her plans, sponsored by the Fulbright scholarship, include a stay at Bochum University studying the develop- ment of the dramaturg ' s role in German Theatre. 44 Tennis , Men ' s Tennis at Washington College made history in 1985. They set a new record for most wins in a sin- gle season (17) and fin- ished third in the South Atlantic region of the NCAA. They won their first Con- ference title this year, and each team mem- ber was ranked high nationally. The Women ' s Tennis team finished the sea- son with an 8-4 re- cord, winning big over Trinity College, to whom they had fallen by one match point last year. 45 Craw Both the men ' s and women ' s crew teams kept fan enthusiasm high this year by refusing to be intimidated by tough competitors. At the Kerr Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River, one of the biggest events of scholastic rowing. Coach Chatellier saw his crew improve its 1983 time on the 2,000-meter course by 18 seconds. 46 Senior Convocation Features Art Buchwald 47 Truth can be humorous I have great respect for Ronald Reagan, I worship the very quicksand he walks on. And then there was the one about Reagan ' s claim that trees cause more pollution than automobiles. I saw a sign on a tree that said, ' Chop me down before I kill again. ' Looking back on the 1984 Presidential election, Buch- waid said that Mondale didn ' t win because every time you saw him interviewed by a reporter, you wanted to vote for the reporter. He wondered aloud why one particular campaign, fa- cetiously promoting the Secretary of Defense, never got off of the ground. Its slogan was Weinberger for President — Let ' s Get it Over With 48 52 (QMAIDOATKDM Y W.
