Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1977 volume:

Don Kelly . ... . . : : y. - m This One ' s For You. I ' ll do it for a year. Or so Don Kelly thought when the late Harry Russell, editor of the Kent County News and Chairman of the Board of Visitors and Governors of Washington College coaxed Kelly to take charge of the lacrosse team in 1957. 21 temporary seasons, 165 victories, 93 defeats, 1 tie, and 70 All-Americans later, Don Kelly retired from the helm of the Washington College Lacrosse team with an 11-4 season this year and a 2 national ranking in the College Division for the third year. His name has been synonymous with winning lacrosse, having only 2 losing seasons, a period of seven straight Southern Atlantic titles and the Strohbar trophy, 26 consecutive victories from 1963-9, and Intercollegiate Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 1966. Kelly and Washington College ' s success are so remarkable, not only because the College enrollment of men is only 350 and financial scholarships are virtually non-existent, but because neither he nor anyone else at the school ever recruited players. They just came because they like the place or had friends who had gone here. In today ' s competitive dog-eat-dog world, Don Kelly stands alone at the end of an eminently successful era. I ' m eight, a swimming race has just begun-- Call them all back, I want to start over. In the salt air of summer I, with my lover and some friends, heedless of the drifting sun-- Listen! A droning in the sky, Take cover! Slap. The race is sprung, while I still hover (dive dive remember? you almost won) Call them all back, I want to start over. Come to me under the axle-tree, to suffer all wisdom when the blood begins its run, the droning, Here they come again, Take cover! In the still wake on the water I discover nothing but weather towed across the sun, Call them back, it says, and all start over. My best friend has gone to hide with my lover.
