Coincidentally and very appropriately the recipient of this year ' s Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, Mr. McHugh has shown his excellence, not only as an educator, but as a human being. One of the prominent campus-wide themes that has been brought sharply into focus this year is that of our spirit of community. Washing- ton College has always been proud of this ' spirit ' which it professes to possess, and has sought to avoid the student-as-nigger caste system that exists in many larger colleges and universities. But the reality of this ' spirit ' has often been questioned and, by many, doubted. An at- mosphere of alienation and polarization has come to overshadow our impression of trust and open communication. But although belief in the existence of our spirit of community has fal- tered, there are many people who have worked to keep commu- nication and credulity alive. Mr. McHugh is an outstanding member of this group.. His attitude that the members of our community, regardless of age or position of power, are all individuals deserving of equal rec- ognition and concern, has given strength to the college as a whole. And his approach to teaching as a developmental experience has given meaningful direction to many students. And so, with respect and affec- tion, we dedicate this book to an outstanding man of our community. fx :
