V ■The intellectual integrity of any institution depends largely upon the quality and spirit of its leaders. With ade- quate guidance from those already schooled in the academic world, the student cannot help but find his college experi- ence rewarding both scholastically and emotionally. It is to just such a figure of understanding leadership that the 1969 Pegasus is dedicated. Dr. Nathan Smith, chairman of the department of history at Washington College, has long been recognized as an educator of the highest order. Respected by all as a man of intelligence and conviction. Dr. Smith has brought to his classes that aura of intellectual curiosity which of necessity must accompany the successful pursuit of knowledge. To him we extend our sincere appreciation and wishes for many more years of distinguished service. -. ' M « MI ML M BK JiPj-ii l p ' ' . At times I am not at all sure that you should be envied. Can mankind, given his innate selfishness and pugnacity, solve the prob- lems he has created? All of the old panaceas seem to be of doubtful value today and no one yet appears to have an adequate substitute. But we know— you and I and your professors— that the kind of education you have had in these recent years pro- vides the best answers to some at least of these problems. For a liberal education is synonynous with freedom— or the four or five freedoms-essential to the civilizing of man. Freedom from fear and want, freedom of speech, and free- dom in worship. These values must not be compromised. Good luck to you and Godspeed. i Sincerely, TO THE CLASS OF 1969: Lionel Trilling ' s perceptive, academic story, Of This Time, Of That Place, contains a delightful passage about time: A college year is not really a year, lacking as it does three months. And it is endlessly divided into units which, at their beginning, ap- pear larger than they are— terms, half terms, months, weeks. And the ultimate unit, the hour, is not really an hour, lacking as it does ten min- utes. For you and for me, for perhaps slightly different reasons, this passage has a special poignance in June 1969. As we leave Wash- ington College, I am sure we both feel that time has passed more rapidly than we had expected. I hope, however, that we leave with friendships and other ties which will outlive the rigid demar- cations of academic clock and calendar. p(a ( (- . ' g ffy y ' c. S. ■Uyti tyc BEVERLY B.
