The festivities and ceremonies sur- rounding the opening and dedication of the college ' s Fine Arts Center in- cluded the laying of the cornerstone, a convocation address by Douglas Seale, director of Baltimore ' s Center Stage Theatre, and the awarding of two honorary degrees. Professor Robert Ennis of the University of Delaware presented a series of five lectures on architecture; world- renown pianist Eugene Istomin per- formed in the new Tawes Theatre; and the Washington College players put on their production of the Broad- way musical Oh What a Lovely War . Dr. James possesses two of the greatest marks of a fine teacher: a thorough knowledge of his material, whether it be English literature or art, and a sincere interest in conveying to his students not only this knowledge, but also the desire and means to discover knowledge on one ' s own. For Dr. James, stimulation and encouragement come naturally from his vibrant personality. His enthusiasm cannot be contained within himself, therefore it over- flows into his lectures, making them dynamic, dra- matic, and provocative. Upon learning that the Class of 1968 had dedicated its Pegasus to him, Dr. James wrote: There could be no more heartwarming honor for a teacher than such an expression of appreciation from those for whom he is working and whom he derives such joyous pleasure from working with. The Class of 1968 takes great pride and pleasure in dedicating this edition of Pegasus to such a dynamic and dedicated man. 14
