Pegasus ' 68 Washington College Chestertown, Md. Did you ever look at yourself in a pool of water or catch your reflection in the tumbling surf? The features are blurred; the image is unclear. But you know it is really you. Despite the blur, you can recognize that body, that face. And you know that behind that reflection is a mind, and an un- known substance that makes you what you really are; an individual with your own distinguishable quali- ties. That pool of water, that tumbling surf; they too are individuals, and they too have their own special fea- tures. Man has conquered the water as he has the land, but he uses it for his own benefit without stopping to notice the individuality of every ocean, every river, every stream. aea Most men look to the water for recreation, enjoyment, and sport. For some it provides a peaceful change from the troubles and worries of daily life; while for others, the sea means life itself. . aiBMHHm ■■■■■BBnBHHHaHHHnn But whether it be the Atlantic Ocean or Worton Creek; the Chester River or the Chesapeake Bay, ■SHMHBMailHH each pool of water, no matter how wide, no matter how deep, is like every one of us; alike in the general sense but each with its own distin- guishable features. Like a pool of wa- ter, every Washington College stu- dent retains his or her own identity. In truth, we are individuals, entities unto ourselves. The festivities and ceremonies sur- rounding the opening and dedication of the college ' s Fine Arts Center in- cluded the laying of the cornerstone, a convocation address by Douglas Seale, director of Baltimore ' s Center Stage Theatre, and the awarding of two honorary degrees. Professor Robert Ennis of the University of Delaware presented a series of five lectures on architecture; world- renown pianist Eugene Istomin per- formed in the new Tawes Theatre; and the Washington College players put on their production of the Broad- way musical Oh What a Lovely War . FINE ARTS CENTER 12 13 Dr. James possesses two of the greatest marks of a fine teacher: a thorough knowledge of his material, whether it be English literature or art, and a sincere interest in conveying to his students not only this knowledge, but also the desire and means to discover knowledge on one ' s own. For Dr. James, stimulation and encouragement come naturally from his vibrant personality. His enthusiasm cannot be contained within himself, therefore it over- flows into his lectures, making them dynamic, dra- matic, and provocative. Upon learning that the Class of 1968 had dedicated its Pegasus to him, Dr. James wrote: There could be no more heartwarming honor for a teacher than such an expression of appreciation from those for whom he is working and whom he derives such joyous pleasure from working with. The Class of 1968 takes great pride and pleasure in dedicating this edition of Pegasus to such a dynamic and dedicated man. 14 15 16 ADMINISTRATION AND FA CULTY 18 ORGANIZAT IONS AND FEATURES 38 GREEKS 86 98 SPORTS ED CLASSES 132 ITOR DONALD S. GIBSON, LLD., PRESIDENT 20 Dear Class of ' 68: As the time draws near for your graduation, you doubtless face the future with mixed feelings. For many of you the B.A. is but a stepping stone to further academic work; for others it probably will be a terminal degree. But you will all share one thing — this world we live in. And I need hardly tell you that it is not perfect, and that mankind himself bears the chief responsibility for its imperfec- tions. As Matthew Arnold said, We are here on a darkling plain Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, Where ignorant armies clash by night. The world — your world — desperately needs your light. You are better prepared than most to assume your share of responsibility for pro- viding it. Good luck and Godspeed. Sincerely, AimSj . 6 LANDON C. BURNS, Ph.D., DEAN OF THE COLLEGE 22 As my first year, and your fourth, at Washington College comes to an end, I suspect that there are still many things that you could teach me about the campus and about my job. I have learned a great deal this year — in many ways from you, individually and collectively — so that I feel a special identification with you in the class of 1968. In The Eighth Day, Thornton Wilder speaks of a figure in the arras (he doesn ' t mean Polonius), and of the way in which various kinds of people react to the probability of there being a grand design in our lives and perhaps in the universe. May you who go, and we who remain at Washing- ton College, fall neither into the complacency of being so sure we know what that design is that we stop searching, nor into the nihilism of denying the possibility of our apprehending it. To put the matter another way, when you return in ten, twenty, or fifty years, I hope you will have continued to grow intellectually and spiritually and that you will find that the College has done the same. Lambda Chi Alpha ' s Lady Bug and the Senior Class ' Raid Can also received honors. The successful theme of the Jay continued on Kibler Field, where the Sho ' men scored a 3-0 soccer victory over Western Maryland. The week-end concluded with the dance at the armory, at which the SGA finally convinced Jimmy Ruffin and the Van Dykes that they should entertain. r LASH! A statute in 1321 required that all Doctors, Licentiates, and Bache- lors of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. The WRA, in conjunction with Dean Clark ' s office, provided the senior women with a no- curfew key system, and completely revised all rules governing the women ' s residences. The or- ganization sponsored a Christmas project, and in May gave a party in honor of the retiring house- mothers. President Glenn Leggett said the Board of Trus- tees approved the new policy in the belief that any regulation of hours, either by the college or by the individ- ual, is a matter of security rather than morality and that the reasonable secu- rity of the woman ' s residences can be assured without the necessity of the col- lege ' s maintaining an arbitrary ' hours ' system . Well, put a mirror before him and make him see himself in the act of living, under the sway of his passions: either he remains aston- ished and dumbfounded at his own appearance. or else he turns away his eyes so as not to see himself, or else in disgust he spits at his image. or again he clenches his fist to break it; and if he had been weeping, he can weep no more; if he had been laughing, he can laugh no more, and so on. — Pirandello — 77 In the spring many of W. IFC WEEKEND IFC weekend was characterized by The Princetons playing in an empty armory on Saturday night, and a Sun- day afternoon that witnessed more beach than party. After Monday night ' s Songfest, a visit by militant neighbors resulted in a two-front campaign against the fraternities. However, the local militia took com- plete charge of the situation before either side could claim a victory. FLASH! Dr. Richard Brown came to the rescue of Caroline House ' s ema- ciated, flea-bitten mongrel, Nelson, when he donated one square foot of his property for a doghouse. The seniors managed to survive Mike Fineberg ' s and Pete Rosen ' s valiant attempts to raise money at Friday ' s auction, and that evening, the Mitchell Trio sang to an unusually large audience. On Saturday, the kites of Barbara Price and Don Zimmet were victorious, and the first hour of the big dance that evening was spent waiting for the star attraction, soulsinger J. J. GRADUATION WEEKEND JUNE 1-2, 1968 184 President and Mrs. Gibson ' s seniors and guests only reception on Saturday evening proved to be most en- joyable. Gracious hosts always, the Gibsons gave the seniors a chance to talk of the past, present, and fu- ture. 185 Through some stroke of good luck, the processional was conducted with a minimum of confusion. The eleven o ' clock bacculaureate service was convened by the Rev. Omro M. Todd, after which Rabbi Richard G. Hirsch, the Director of the Religion Action Center in Washington, D.C., delivered the sermon. The two-thirty o ' clock commence- ment was presided over by President Gibson, with Dr. Lincoln Gordon of the Johns Hopkins University deliver- ing the Address to the Graduates. The Mandamis was read, the gradu- ates were presented with their diplo- mas, and prizes were awarded. And then it was over. 186 :  v: i:23 « Donna Blatt receives the George Washington Medal. While retaining the basic format of its predeces- sors, this year ' s edition follows the newest trends in yearbook publication. Being part yearbook and part portfolio, Pegasus ' 68 marks a transitionary period at Washington College. Some basic steps were taken this year to change the personality of Pegasus, and it is hoped that within a few years, the publication will achieve full portfolio status. Almost all editors try to work alone, only to dis- cover that it is impossible.
