Thy destiny is only that of man, but thy aspirations may be those of a god. Ovid — Metamorphoses WASHINGTON COLLEGE GHSSTBBTeWH, M YI S9 1 Li 6 ti 10 ifli ig bt. ,y..y i. mi «y • 4@SS EDITOR-IN-CHIEF BUSINESS MANAGER ADVERTISING MANAGER SUSAN STANT FRAZER JONES CHERYL ERLACH College is a place of change. After four years, we leave here with a new view of ourselves and our world. Not only do individuals change, but the college as an institution is constantly developing, and always building upon the achievements of the past. Perhaps in most ways, the Rever- end Dr. Smith would not recognize the college he founded at Chester Town. The campus has expanded greatly since its earliest days, and is now undergoing further develop- ment. But there are many traces of the past in our college life. They have become an inseparable part of Washington College, embodied in tradition. The PEGASUS this year attempts to remind us of these traditions. It seeks to show the movement of time, always accompanied by change, in the history of Washington Col- lege. It reminds us of those things that change and those that become familiar emblems of the past, linking past and present, and projecting what the future may hold. The natural beauty of our campus is due to its location in the remote country area of the Eastern Shore. The winding Chester River and the beaches of the Chesapeake Bay pro- vide an atmosphere of leisure. The campus itself, with its brickwalks and shade trees, is ideal for an enjoyment of the outdoors. We can easily see change and tradition: the growth of the Elm Tree, its dedication to past memories. Time affects natural surroundings . . . The Washington Elm, first planted in 1932. . . . and it causes us to rebuild our man-made environment. Develop- ment is a familiar word at Wash- ington College. From the past emerges an ivy-covered hall; in the present stands Kent House and the new Hodson Hall, and the labors of construction crews suggest the im- provements of the future. i US ' ' ' ; ' ' • HHH jjy ! •• • • • :  i B ' J H piP! College surroundings may differ through the years, but our purpose as college stu- dents remains forever unchanging — the search for knowledge, realized in the classroom and in the library, in groups and as individuals . . . Bunting Library when first built. 11 . . . but always with the faculty as our guides. Faculty and students are the essentials and in- separables. Perhaps this relationship has changed in the course of Washington College history; perhaps the tendency has been toward an even closer and more encompassing associa- tion. Whatever the effects of time in the past, we hope for the realization of this tendency in the future. The omens of today are promising. College is a faculty-student partnership in learning, and in other phases of campus life. The scope of faculty activity is broad . . . . . . combining instruction with the open air in true Greek fashion . . . answering our baffling questions (after a moment ' s thought) . . . . . . reaching into our campus organizations with determined leadership . . . 12 . . . awaiting those moments of private concentration — and daydreaming . . . attempting to participate in our less dignified activities . . . . joining us in our anticipation of victory . . . . and encouraging individual experiments. 13 Hubbard flagpole dedication in 1939. 14 However, college is even more than physical surroundings and educa- tion. It is now, and has always been, an aggregate of people united for the common purpose of learn- ing, a learning which extends be- yond the curriculum to the forma- tion of meaningful relationships with our fellow students and fac- ulty. Through the years, the college atmosphere has stressed more and more the importance of social ad- justment. Time has brought a wide variety to the social life at Washington Col- lege, extending its scope from grad- uations, concerts, assemblies, and dedications . . . Heritage and rededication at the 1963 commencement exercises. 15 ... to everyday contacts with our friends 17 Socializing in old Reid Hall lounge. to the close associations of dorm life. 18 19 Aside from these casual contacts, college offers many opportunities for group activity in campus organizations. As in social life, the passage of time has brought an increased diversification in available activities at Washington College. They range from athletics, as spectator or partici- pant; to the cave exploring of the science club; to informal and formal stage presentations; to political organization on campus in the SGA and participation in nationwide campaigns; and including activities which involve the Chestertown community as a whole. The Washington College Players in 1930. 21 The foundation of any college is its faculty and its students. As a small liberal arts institution, Washington College strives for the ideal of a faculty that shows an active inter- est in campus life. The 1965 PEGASUS is dedicated to Dr. Joseph McLain for his accomplishments in maintaining and improving stu- dent-faculty relationships as well as for his many achieve- ments in scientific research. For his promotion of individual study and research, and for his sincere interest in college life and college students, we are eternally grateful. 22 23 CONTENTS 26 48 94 112 132 154 186 201 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY SENIORS AND CLASSES GREEKS ORGANIZATIONS FEATURES SPORTS ADVERTISEMENTS STUDENT DIRECTORY 24 Enter now into campus life at Washington College through the pages of the Pegasus. 25 . . . With nearly this number, the Chorus gave its an- nual Christmas concert, demonstrating an in- creased skill at singing difficult music. However, membership declined steadily during the second semester until eventually the group was dis- banded. The high quality of work that was done during the first semester shows that Washington College can have a chorus equal to those of large univer- sities. The PEGASUS hopes that next year an equally enthusiastic turn-out will participate in both semesters of Chorus activities. The annual Chorus concert, held in Russell. 125 Koochey-koochey-koo. The activities began on Friday with a parents ' committee meeting and an honors dinner. On Saturday the faculty were in their offices for interviews with parents. At 2:30 the Washing- ton ' s Birthday Convocation was held in Russel Gymnasium. Following his address, the speaker, Fred M. Hechinger, author and education editor of The New York Times, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from President Gib- son. After the convocation, the Parents ' Associa- tion held its annual meeting and a reception was given at Hynson Lounge. That night the Morgan Baer orchestra and Hook Smith and his orchestra entertained at the first Washington ' s Birthday Ball. The Sho ' men captured the top spot in the Mason-Dixon Northern Division with a 6-0 record, and went on to take the Mason- Dixon Championship by defeating Roanoke Col- lege with a score of 3-1. Many of the team members were newcomers to the squad and through the experience they gained this season, the future prospects look optimistic. Start off. BASKETBALL Compiling an overall win-loss record of 5-12, the Washington College 1964- 1965 basketball team placed seventh in the Northern Division of the Mason- Dixon Conference, and had a 3-5 Middle Atlantic Conference record. Under the direction of Coach Ron Sisk, the Sho ' men played many close games throughout the season and totalled up many points. However, the offensive attack of the Sho ' men definitely over- powered their defensive ability, and this was the cause of many of the season ' s losses. Two of the 1964-1965 basketball team members, Rich Carrell and Tom Finne- gan, burned the nets to hit the 1000 point mark of their careers this year. Tom was also named to the Mason- Dixon Conference first team, received Honorable Mention to the A.P. Little College All Americans, and was named the team ' s Most Valuable Player. At the Middle Atlantic Confer- ence Championship Relays, the Sho ' men broke two school records and equalled one. Ben Whitman captured the Frosh Mile title and broke the school record (4:36.4). Marty Smith was the number two man in the 880, also breaking a school record (1:58.4). Vance Straus- burg equalled the school record for the 120 HH (14.9) and took a third place.
