The upperclass students arrived on Friday and struck fear into the hearts of the freshmen with such cries as Square that dink and What ' s on page 22 of the handbook? After a week of tests, assemblies and meetings with student advisors, each freshman gradually became adjusted to life on a college campus. The beginning of the path to knowledge. Pressure is eased at an orientation assem- Several freshmen take time out from the week ' s activ- ities to become acquainted. Convocation . . . Soon after the school year started the Fall Convocation was held in Russell Gym. The principal speaker, Dr. Robert Harder, spoke to the faculty and students on the History and Philosophy of Science. Awards were presented to the outstanding students in each of the three lower classes, as well as to the fraternity and sorority with the highest scho- lastic average. DR. ROBERT HARDER The Visitors and Governors Medal for the senior with the highest scholastic record was presented to three seniors; Christine Olpin, Patrick Cullen, and Chester Babat. 36 Awards Robert Leitch accepted the Errol L. Fox Loving Cup for Kappa Alpha, the fraternity with the outstanding scho tic record. Concerts . . . The Concert Series opened in October with a presen- tation of Mozart ' s opera Cosi Fan Tutti by the Turnau Opera Company. 38 Speakers In an informal evening assembly Dr. Robert Nelson attempted to create a modern painting. I Speaking to an evening gathering, Mr. Gerard Widdington discussed the U. N. ' s activities in the Middle East. 39 Homecoming Weekend An eager team disappointed Friday night a pep rally, complete with bon-fire and cheerleaders, was held on Kibler Field. Both the team and the students were enthusiastic in preparation for the following day ' s game. Unfortunately, rain forced the post- ponement of the game with American Univer- sity. 40 Decorations Rain characterized the 1961 Homecoming Weekend. In spite of the inclement weather the fraternities displayed their decorations. This year Phi Sigma Kappa captured the trophy by depicting American University laying an egg over their loss to W.C. Un- fortunately the game was never played. 41 The Dance Dancing to the orchestra of Billy Butterfield, Washington College Students and alumni enjoyed their 1961 Homecoming Dance in the setting of a French ballroom. Russell Gymnasium was transformed into a Versailles Hall of Mirrors, complete with pillars and chandeliers. This was quite a job for Lisa, the Cinderella Homecoming Queen, who headed the decorat- ing committee before learning that she had been chosen by the student body to be their Queen. After becoming used to the rigors of college life, many of the freshmen began to take an active part in school affairs, academic, extracurricular, and athletic. In October, the class elected a Halloween Queen and King to reign over the parade in Chestertown, The class also held a success- ful hay ride and beach party for the enjoy- ment of its members. It is at this point that each student must choose his or her major field of study. The choice must necessarily be a worthy one which will be beneficial to each individual in his future career or profession. But decision making was only one pect of this years ' sophomore class. They combined with the junior class in the fall for an informal dance, and in the Spring the class held a beach party at Anthony ' s Beach. Time out for a chat between classes. 66 Class Leaders STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTATIVES; Theodore Parker, Kathy Worhington, Page Kelly, Henrietta Himmer.
