ss PEGASUS Presented by the Pegasus Staff Georgia Habicht— Editor Robert Eissele— Business Manager w 1960 MSW UMPW r - - •«■' . ? -k iSHINGTON COLLEGE J : , , Wl « FOREWORD . . . In recent years, The Pegasus of Washing- ton College has been emphasizing the im- portance of tradition. This tradition has been a strong foundation for our progress. — Currently this progress has been particularly intense. Therefore, in addition to conducting the traditional functions of a yearbook, the nine- teen sixty Pegasus will attempt to convey this forward movement by the use of modern design. CONTENTS htroduction Vacuity Seniors Underclassmen Organizations Sports Mtivities k DEDICATION The class of 1960 and the Pegasus Staff would like to publicly recognize DR. IRVING BARNETT for his outstanding service. In this year of change and progress at Washington College, it is fitting that we recognize such a man for his contributions to a well-rounded liberal education. His contributions have not stopped outside his classrooms. He is a teacher. United Nations consultant, field officer and economic planner in China, lawyer economist with National Planning Board, and the Philadelphia director of the Asian technical assistance program for the Annerican Friends Service Committee. As director of the newest plan of studies at our college, the International Studies program, he seeks to equip students with an understanding of the theory underlying the various disciplines, a knowledge of contemporary problems, and a capacity to feel at home in an international atmosphere and to sense some of the problems facing those working in international affairs. We dedicate this book to him in the hope that we can continue the progress that he has initiated with his extensive knowledge, broad outlooks, and winning smile. ..■: . . r. % ■III I m il i iT f- f ,. Enclosed are some pictures of campus life at W. C. Some of these shots are of hazing, which has just ended. Every morning we rise and shine for breakfast and early classes. Each class lasts fift minutes, after which we have ten min- utes to brush up for our next session. We eat lunch at Hodson Hall, and then go to the snack bar for some relaxation. It is at this time that the ever important mail, our only contact with home and support, is picked up. After lunch we go off to language lab. Don ' t worry, this is a safe laboratory— no explosions. When we have finished with this lab most of us go somewhere quiet to study, prefer- ably the library. After dinner, if we don ' t stay in our rooms to study, we are back in the library. Finally when all our studying is finished, everyone congregates in someone ' s room to hash over the events of the day. This has been a usual day, but will have more to say after the weekend. Love, P. S. Send money. (Px yy 84 8:29, and Jigs will kill me. This was the winning tug. The longed-for letter— and money. We can find more ways to waste time. iHubIa usted .espanol? There are some members of the class of ' 61 who, although , they are only sopho- mores, have achieved distinction at Wash- ington College. Susan Gibson is President of the Canterbury Club, Ann Kane is Secre- tary of the Student Government Associa- tion, and Barbara Hart heads the G.I. A. A. Georgia Habicht is the editor of this year ' s annual, and Norman Rubin is President of the college choir. Skip Rudolph is one of W.C. ' s outstanding athletes, being named to the Ail-American, All-Southern soccer squad for the second year. A large percentage of the class of 1961 returned this year to help make the sopho- more class an active one. The first task facing the class was to set up a hazing committee to rule over freshman week. Unfortunately for the sophomores, hazing ended when the freshman boys won the tug-of-war. Settling down to serious studying was a difficult adjustment. But getting into the swing of things was easier to do this year than in our freshman year. In the spring the sophomores began to think about their future careers when they picked their major field of study. The hazing committee poses for a picture. Sophomore class officers Ida May Heinz, Treasurer; Florence Nash, Secretary; Jim Cassidy, Vice-President; and Scott Monroe, President, meet in the Snack Bar. In the early fall the sophomore class picked Carolynn Dunne, Barbara Hart, Barbara Belfi, and George Jerman to represent them on the Student Government Associa- tion. 89 JUNIORS Top to bottom: Clement Kell, Walter Hammond, Robert Emerson, Richard Jacobs, William Johnson, Robert Stadler, Philip Whelan, James Vitagliano, Daniel Egan, Richard Irvin, Doug-Livingston, Lee Curry, James Wild, Robert Lentz, James Carey, Dale Tyler, Albert Klair, Richard Schumann, David Lance, Rafael Sarmiento, John Maun, Douglas Bailey, Peter Wastie, Alex Fountain, Dolores Marquiss, Darlene Berger. 90 The junior class, although a small class in connparison to the rest of the school, has contributed a great deal to Washington College in the past year. When they returned last fall they had chosen their ma- jor and were prepared to write research papers and to take seminar courses in their in- tended field of study. By the time they became juniors, they had learned to combine their social, extracur- ricular and academic life. Earl Moore and Rufus Nye are two fine running freshmen who give added strength to a hard working team. Cross Country, while not as spectacular as basketball or lacrosse, demands great desire on the part of each runner. Captain OIlie Robinson had a fine year and will be missed next fall. DiMaggio ' s outstanding play won him a position at mid-field on the first team All-American squad, while Herb Moore was chosen goalie on the third team. Performances by Dick Callahan and Lee Curry brought them Honorable Mention All-American recognition at midfield and defense re- spectively. The first game of the season saw Washington College play its finest game of the year in a losing 8-6 effort against Navy. Other losses included University of Baltimore, Virginia, and Washington and Lee. The six wins were over Delaware, Swarthmore, Loyola, Dickinson, Hofstra, and Drexel. Mark Diashyn in his junior year had the best season yet. Mark scored 148 points to lead the team. Over a period of three years, Mark has scored 31 % of the team points, has entered 100 events, and finished first in 55. Mark also holds the Mason-Dixon Conference record in the 220 low hurdles with a time of 23.9 seconds. Seniors of 1959, Joe Thompson, Tom Grouse, and Q Parsons will all be missed. However, experience gained by Arnold, Pace, and Morris will give added strength this year. Joe Thompson, a calm distance runner, had a fine season as did Tom Grouse in the broad jump. Q Parsons carried the chores for pole vaulting being the only contender. Seniors Robinson and Eissele added points in the hurdle. Along with Diashyn, they proved to be a winning trio. Mark Diashyn leads his opponent In the hurdles. 146 OIlie Robinson, Mark Diashyn, and Bob Eissele warm up before a meet. All seniors, they should continue to lead the team. 147 BASEBALL The baseball teams of Washington College have long been noted as strong, and the 1959 team was no exception. Coach Tom Kibler directed the team to a season with wins over such teams as Delaware and Mount St. Mary ' s. With the return of hard-hitting Mort Lenane and the all-around ability of John Leverage, the SHO ' MEN got a big boost at the plate. With a fine pitcher in freshman Dave Leonhard and a good defense from Skordas, Phillips, and Miller, the team went on to have a fine season. The third base spot was taken over by Don Davenport who did an excellent job. Captain Bob Bragg, who graduated in June, 1959, will be missed behind the plate. The Washington College Players, noted for their productions of Shakespearean plays, presented Twelfth Night, a comedy in five acts. Produced and directed by Ann Matthews, the play was well-received. Vi- ola, who is disguised as a boy, and Sebasti- an, her twin, are the characters around which the play is centered. Many romances form complicated sub-plots which are final- ly r esolved towards the end of the play. Accompanied by Dr. Rubin and Dr. Smith, Dick Fitzgerald, in the role of the court jester, renders a song. 170 Diane Dickinson, in the role of Viola, and Dicl Fitzgerald engage in conversation. The complete cast takes a bow at the end of an enjoyable performance. 171 College Town . . . dependence upon one another . . . yet a certain resentment . . . the college is a world in itself . . . but it is necessary to leave our secure surroundings and venture into the unknown . . . just going downtown is a change for the student . . .
