Editor-in-Chief HARRY R. DUNDORE Business Manager ROBERT N. CLEAVER ,- 70 t ft olUfe ■t e t95X !H 11! !!! ■mi 76e Sento (2 04 ' Dedccatt t It is with great pride that we of the 1958 Pegasus staff dedicate this year ' s yearbook to a man who for several years has devoted his life to the growth of Washington College. We thank him for his efforts in developing our college into an efficient organization, for never being too busy to help us with our schedules even though his job requires the efforts of ten men, and for his easygoing manner that makes our problems easier to solve. Our thanks go with our dedication to Mr. Ermon N. Foster. ' f ' ■HI v gm 49fl r 76e S d zd 4 FOUNDED 1782 WASHINGTON COLLEGE CHESTERTOWN, MARYLAND PRESIDENT ' S OFFICE Dear Class of 1958, The 1957 - 1958 school year has been a special one for all of us at Washington College and particularly for you Seniors. The special events of the 17 5th Anniversary celebration last fall cast a special glow over the entire academic year. You are proud, I know, to realize that 175 years ago this spring the college graduated its first class. The preceding four years have been a rich educational experience for each of you, perhaps more so than you realize at this time. I trust that the years ahead of you will be far more productive and rewarding because of the time you spent on the hill. As seniors you are not saying goodbye to Washington College -- just ' til we meet again. Do not let your sense of belonging here languish. Come back often. Join actively in the varied programs of the Washington College Alumni Association in your area. My warm good wishes go with each of you. Go od luck and Godspeed. Very sincerely yours, Daniel Z. Gibson ' ponecvond The traditional purpose of a yearbook is to preserve treasured moments of our college lives which will create lasting memories. Through this presentation, we hope your memories will be even more precious. With the realization that we are striving toward a common goal, the friendships we have made will be enduring; the fun we have had will be better appreciated because we know it is not granted to all peoples; the knowl- edge we have acquired will be more vital, because it enables us to accept responsibility. May this ideal which has inspired us, be a criteria throughout our lives. It is also the responsibility of the Art Club to make posters for those organizations on campus who do not have publicity chairmen. Through these activities the Art Club exists not exclusively for its own mem- bers, but for the pleasure of the student body by bringing to the students cre- ative interests in such a way as to enliven the interests of others. 85 % Ttetvwtut (?bd The Newman Club is a member of the Washington Province of the National Newman Club Federation. Its purpose is to unite all Catholics on the campus and to further their training under proper guidance of their beliefs in God. Meetings are devoted to spiritual and intellectual discussions led by the Newman Club Chaplain, Rev. John Masterson, assistant pastor of the Catholic Church in Chestertown. Various recreational and social activities are also spon- sored by the Newman Club throughout the year. m H , i i ) From left to right: Susan Elliott, Betty Warren, Jo Butcher, Sally Mudgett, Ellen Jo Sterling, Marty Jewett, Helen Kleinheksel, Carole Christensen, Jan Kush, Jane Rayner, 76e ( ieenCeacCeft Victory! Are you ready? Hep! Hep!, and so began our cheers. These ten girls attired in maroon and white were present at soccer and basketball athletic events to encourage the spectators to support our teams. Each year they contrib- ute new collegiate cheers with precise, graceful motions. The spirit of the cheerleaders seems to be contagious as is shown by the greater amount of support given from the fans this year. 6 7 e 7?tt. 1 en to t ttenany Society The oldest organization of campus, The Mount Vernon Literary Society, has had one of its busiest years since its founding. This small group of students, each having a deep interest in literature, pooled their resources and published the Society ' s magazine, The Mount Vernon Miscellany, for the third time. The Society ' s main activity has been the work of finding and bringing to no- tice any literary endeavors on the campus. This has been done by having various students read their work, whether it be in the form of poetry, essay, or short story, to the Society assembled. From what has been presented a committee se- lects what it considers the best work, and attempts to publish it in the magazine. 76e £C k The Washington College ELM is published every two weeks during the school year by an all-student staff which is aided and advised by Mr. James L. Bowers. In reporting campus activities, the ELM contains regular news articles, cov- erage of all sporting events, and interesting features on the people and hap- penings which make Washington College. The newspaper has seen many con- spicuous improvements during the 1957-1958 school year, not the least of which was the appearance of an eight page, as well as the appearance of several six- page editions. The ELM also published a special edition devoted to the World University Service Drive at the beginning of the second semester. 3v 76e 70 46i t?to«t goMeye g io i The Washington College Choir, under the direction of Mr. Robert L. For- ney, is composed of college students who enjoy singing together just for the fun of it. The members meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and from this group is chosen the 48 voice Concert Choir, which presents programs both on and off the campus. After last year ' s successful tour of Western Maryland, this year ' s hopes are for an extended trip through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and points north. The President this year is Bill Pfeiffer, Vice-President, Sally Ann Groome, and Secretary, Jane Wilson. Although still relatively young, the choir has already established itself as an important activity on the Washington College Campus. JL JL ©Jlesft I i 7 ' Pe uu Sta Editor-in-chief. With the absence of six of last year ' s letter- men, the Coaches ' work seemed harder than before. Returning lettermen, however, of the 1956 season, Shelley Goodman, and the presence of such men as Moose Mix, Gus Skordas , Bob Bragg and Don Davenport did not leave the picture too glum. Tutored by Coach Kibler and Barry Burns, Flea Phillips looked like the best man to fill in for the fabulous Burns at the second base position. On the merits of the record last season, the men were not expected to drop far off the pace for. the new campaign. With more experience under their belts, the pitching staff led by Arnold Sten, Don Miller, Roy Henderson, and Al Rayne looked very strong. With added help from the other vets and a few newcomers, the 1958 Baseball Squad should have a successful season. The Sho ' men were also represented in the Mason -Dixon Championships held at Hampden-Sydney College. In this final track meet of the year we placed third in the mile relay with Cuc- cia, Potter, Diashyn, and Emory carrying the baton, while the only solo contender to bring home a medal was Mark Diashyn in the 220 yard low hurdles. Even though the Sho ' men captured only 3 wins against 5 defeats for the year, Coach Don Chatellier was satisfied with the overall performance of the men. The team presented a much stronger offense than in its previous year, and showed much better ability to move the ball into scoring position. They were op- erating without the help of the ' 56 scoring star, Rex Lenderman, who was sidelined with a back injury. However, Rex gave his best in helping Coach Athey bring home a winning season. Bob Bragg filled in with great scor- ing ability at center forward and came through with 17 goals. Such men as Arnie Sten, Joe Seivold, Don Miller, Jack Jennings, Don Davenport, Mick- ey DiMaggio, and the rest of the men helped make this great season possible. These men won several positions on all-opponent and all-conference ratings. Jack Jennings also came through on the second squad All-Amer- ican team. Next year will be a big question mark as far as the won-lost column goes. With the returning lettermen and new enrollees, Hank Macabin will gain his eligibility and be a great help to the team. Such men as Lenderman, Sten, Walters and Seivold will certainly be missed, but Coach Athey will make the best of the material on hand which, as a whole, is good. (? 1044 OUHt Ut Since Coach Don Chatellier has taken over the reins of the cross-country team, they have been improving steadily each year. The 1957 team had an outsranding year in compiling a record of six wins and three defeats. This is the best record the Sho ' men have had in several years. The team was led by freshman Dick Skinner, and co-captains Joe Thompson and Tom Crouse. The injury of Thompson for the greater part of the season hurt the team ' s chances in several of the meets. Along wirh Skinner, Thompson, and Crouse, and the return of lettermen Mickey DiMaggio, Jim Pickett, and Tom Woodward, Coach Chartelier has a strong nucleus with which to build next year ' s team. Also the year ' s experience gained by the other men and the addition of some newcomers should keep the team on its winning ways and perhaps come with an even better record than last year ' s team. This year ' s Washington College Sho ' men had a good season in posting a .500 over-all record and being the surprise team of the M-D Conference. At the start of the season, most observers con- ceded it would be Just like last year when the team won only four games. Coach Ed Athey worked hard to knit together a smooth-functioning unit, which did the college proud in more than doubling its win output of the previous year. At times the team showed its potential by downing some of the toughest teams in the M-D Conference. Outstanding performances were turned in by two Sophomores, Bob Brown and Dick Callahan. The mid-season loss of Marty Sweeny, due to poor grades, and Joe Seivold, due to injury, hurt the team when it was on its way to a better than aver- age campaign. In spite of this, a pleasant surprise turned up in the play of Bob Bragg. Bragg was not in the starting lineup in the first several games, but later broke in as a valuable asset. 13!
