mm. Pennsylvania, and he wrote the charter of neighboring St. John ' s College in Annapolis. At the same time he was a distinguished clergyman who delivered funeral orations in the style of the day for many American leaders. He was the motivating force for the creation of the Protestant Episcopal Church of America when the colonial Episcopalians severed their connection with the Church of England. Of interest here is the fact that at a church conclave in Chestertown in 1780 the title Protestant Episcopal Church of America was first used. Is it any wonder, then, that we are proud of Chestertown and wish to dedicate our annual to it? There is much, much more of importance. There is the unusual record of the town ' s contribution as a colonial port, with British Customs officials stationed here. Its contribution of men and materials in the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and in all subsequent wars comprise a record of distinction and pride. Its contributions in higher education, as the home of Maryland ' s first chartered College, must be emphasized. All these things create in us a sense of pride and of belonging to the past from whence everything springs upon which we build today and for tomorrow. Aside, however, from its outstanding even ts which we saw so well por- trayed last fall, and apart from its distinguished leaders and people down through the years, Chestertown means so much more that is personal and closer to us. It means the wide Washington Avenue, the few remaining brick sidewalks, the beautiful trees, the stately colonial mansions of which Ches- tertown has its full share alongside of Annapolis on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay. Chestertown means the gleaming blue Chester River, the fishing and swimming and other activities it provides. It means the friendly merchants, the warm churches, the fine hospital that is so close for our purposes. Chestertown, in fact, becomes a part of us and we trust that we shall not be taken so far away that we cannot visit it frequently, and maybe, in days to come, settle down here when we want refuge from the teeming cities and demand quiet, yet progress, charm, and accessibility to all places of importance. And so — we salute Chestertown and dedicate our yearbook to it. Together, the two will enable us, at least, to relive the happiest days of our lives. iwi -—
