« C C c ty o ?957 Pefa cte Presented by the Senior Class of TV C t 9 t tt Chestertown, Maryland Icwe w The 1957 Pegasus exemplifies the close of an- other year at Washington College. This year a new type printing is being used, called offset print- ing. The staff hopes that this pictorial deluxe book will bring back fond memories in future years. The candid — the posed — the serious — the funny — the new and shiny pages of today will become a treasure of faded memories in years to come. Prize this book highly and guard it closely, for it holds the key to many days of future hap- piness as you sit by the fireplace on cold winter evenings and dream of your days at old Washing- ton College. l fc sSti%£ j X £fa W Robert H. Admittedly an unusual dedi- cation, it is on the other hand a most natural one. Hardly a student enters Washington College and remains to graduate who does not wish that some- time he could make Chestertown his permanent home. The virtues of this famed old Eastern Shore town have heen particularly impressed upon us in this, our senior year. Chestertown, in the fall of 1956, staged a great celebration of its 250th Anniversary. And we were more than casually im- pressed with its record since 1706 when the Maryland Colonial Assembly erected the port of Chester Town. What is it that is so impressive about Chestertown, that makes it more than just the town in which we have spent four college years? The answer is that Chestertown is so many things. Few towns, in any of the original colonies, have produced so much rich history and tradition. Few other towns can boast so many great Americans. Among others, for example, are John Peter Zenger who more than any other American in colonial days set the pattern for freedom of the press and who resided in Chestertown as a printer for a period; Charles Willson Peale, who so ably embodied the spirit in American art as it flourished during the Revolution, and who lived in Chestertown in the mid-eighteenth century and attended Kent Free School of which his father was headmaster, and which later became Washington College. T hen there are the famous Nicholson brothers and Lambert Wickes who were in the top flight of our Revolutionary Naval leaders. And despite its size, this little community was the home of five United States Senators — James Lloyd, Philip Reed, Ezekiel Forman Chambers, James Alfred Pear- cex, and George Vickers. Chestertown was the residence of the Reverend Dr. William Smith, founder of Washington College, but whose fame spread wider. He was first Provost of the College of Philadelphia, which grew into the University of .-.-.■ ■ mm. Pennsylvania, and he wrote the charter of neighboring St. John ' s College in Annapolis. At the same time he was a distinguished clergyman who delivered funeral orations in the style of the day for many American leaders. He was the motivating force for the creation of the Protestant Episcopal Church of America when the colonial Episcopalians severed their connection with the Church of England. Of interest here is the fact that at a church conclave in Chestertown in 1780 the title Protestant Episcopal Church of America was first used. Is it any wonder, then, that we are proud of Chestertown and wish to dedicate our annual to it? There is much, much more of importance. There is the unusual record of the town ' s contribution as a colonial port, with British Customs officials stationed here. Its contribution of men and materials in the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and in all subsequent wars comprise a record of distinction and pride. Its contributions in higher education, as the home of Maryland ' s first chartered College, must be emphasized. All these things create in us a sense of pride and of belonging to the past from whence everything springs upon which we build today and for tomorrow. Aside, however, from its outstanding even ts which we saw so well por- trayed last fall, and apart from its distinguished leaders and people down through the years, Chestertown means so much more that is personal and closer to us. It means the wide Washington Avenue, the few remaining brick sidewalks, the beautiful trees, the stately colonial mansions of which Ches- tertown has its full share alongside of Annapolis on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay. Chestertown means the gleaming blue Chester River, the fishing and swimming and other activities it provides. It means the friendly merchants, the warm churches, the fine hospital that is so close for our purposes. Chestertown, in fact, becomes a part of us and we trust that we shall not be taken so far away that we cannot visit it frequently, and maybe, in days to come, settle down here when we want refuge from the teeming cities and demand quiet, yet progress, charm, and accessibility to all places of importance. And so — we salute Chestertown and dedicate our yearbook to it. Together, the two will enable us, at least, to relive the happiest days of our lives. iwi -— So o utte4. . . . ? ate utie Put Them All Together and 7fa ? And thus, as Dr. Clark left, so did many treasured memories of his immortal coaching ability of the W. C. lacrosse teams of the past. The two pictures on this page represent the two never-to-be-forgotten poses of Dr. Clark on the Lacrosse Field. In 1954 his team won the Laurie Cox Divisional Championship, placing sixth in the nation. From under his mentorship came many AU-Americans such as Billy Russell, Dick Weller, Bob Lipsitz, Joe Seivold and Hesse Howard. $ Dr. Charles B. Clark Dr. Clark ' s successor is Don Kelly, of Chester- town, a famous Olympic lacrosse player in his day, and an outstanding letterman in high school and college. As Dr. Clark has gone from the ranks of the teaching and coaching profession to work for the Atomic Energy Commission, his thoughts in the Spring will undoubtedly turn to his second love, Lacrosse. He has established the lacrosse spirit and tradition at Washington College; he has up- held the fair play and sportsmanship of W. C. athletic teams. The students of W. C, especially Lacrosse players will always think of him as Mr. Lacrosse, and a man of outstanding leader- ship in the college teaching ranks. Dr. Charles B. Clark Co-Captains Ed Bair and Hesse Howard John Howard was selected to the first team Ail-American last season, as he led the country in assists. Howard was the winner of the Turnbull Trophy of the Mt. Washington Lacrosse Club and the Stephen Seth Trophy of- fered by the Naval Academy. In 1954 he also led the country in assists with 51 as the Maroon and Black won the Laurie Cox Divi- sional Championship. Joe Seivold was selected to the third team All-American. The past four years has brought about a new attitude toward the Washington College tennis teams. Both athletes and students are taking more of an interest in the sport because of the favourable records compiled by the ten- nis teams in the past few years and because of the increased interest among college stu- dents in playing the game for recreation. Veteran George Hanst displays his back-hand talent against Ft. Meade. Under the mentorship of coach John Wyatt, the 1956 tennis squad had one of the best seasons in the past few years.
