JAMES ROY MICOU. JAMES Rov Micot, vice-principal of this college and pro- fessor of Latin, was born in Essex county, Va., in 1859. After attending for nine years private schools in his native town, he was sent in his fifteenth year to Richmond, where he spentfour years at one of the best schools in the State, its course of instruction being fully equal to that of the smaller colleges. Entering the University of Virginia in October, 1877, he graduated in the follow- ing June in the schools of Latin, German, French and Pure Math- ematic, thereby accomplishing in one session about one-half of the A. M. course, which always requires three and often four or more years for its completion. Forced by circumstances to leave the university, he began the study of law, and was in due time admitted to the bar. He had, however, meanwhile, accepted the position of instructor in mathematics in McCabe's University School, Peters- burg, Va., which position he held for six years, resigning to begin the practice of his profession. Before settling anywhere, he was elected vice-principal of this college, and bidding a final farewell to Coke and Blackistone, he in 1887 came to VVashington College, where he has since remained. 16
