CHARLES W. REID. CHAI-:Liss VJ. REID, principal of Washi11g'toi1 College, was born in Chester county, Pennsylvania. Both of his parents came from England. He completed the four years' course at the Philadelphia High School, after spending two years in the grammar schools. He entered the Junior Class of Dickinson College, Where he graduated in the summer of '65, the honor man of his class. He immediately organized a private school at Milford, Dela- ware, which he taught for tvvo years. In the fall of '67, he went to Germany to study the classical languages. He spent one year at the University of Gottingen, one at Berlin, and six months at Bonn, mainly in the study of Greek. During his absence in Europe, he travelled through Germany, France, Holland, Relgium, Italy and Sicily, and spent three months in Greece. Un his return to America, he was elected a professor in Alleghany College, Meadville, Pa., where he filled the chair of modern languages for seven years, and that of Greek for eight. In 18845, he was appointed professor of Greek and German in St. John's College. In 1880, he was chosen Principal of Washington College. 14 -U7
