BAND ln the fall of 1939, the trustees of Washington Academy decided to organ- ize a school band. Nine instruments were purchased and a request was made for musicians. Eighteen students answered this call, and the band was launched on its way. It was not until early February of 1940 that the organization was completed. Under the leadership of Mr. Hovey Wis- well, an alumnus of the school, and in- structor of several bands in the vicinity, it began regular practice, and with the ad- dition of nine more instruments, pro- gressed rapidly ln August of this same year the band held its first public concert in the new bandstand at East Machias By this time the band had grown to twenty five mem bers There followed a series of concerts ending in September After the last of these a barn dance vtas held to raise money for band uniforms X The band continued under the able leadership of Mr. Wisxx'ell for several years. In 1944 Mr. Wiswell resigned because of ill health, and Mr. Wallace Hall of Whiting became our instructor. We were not only fortunate in having Mr. Hall as our instructor, but in having several members of his family in the band as well. Mr. Hall has been with us now for seven years, and has done much to- ward the success of our band. We now have a membership of twenty. and the school owns twenty-seven instru- ments ln addition to this Mr Hall has supplied several instruments of h ovtn to those who are inter sted 1n becoming band members From this beginning only tvtelve years ago our band has become one of the best in the county lt makes several public appearances each year in parades and at school entertainments Sif- XX X B-XXD 4. mu lctt to iight lmdsex XX I-rxe l llrnsxxortlt -X -Xndruxs Instructor lltll R Henderson Xl Ixllton -X Roberts L Dennison Scurnd rim left I0 rlght C Cnrdntr l Small j bmall Xl look B Beam X lxulton Xl X C itcs B Williamson lront ron lcft to right P Hill S Smith B Gardner D Dmsmort l- Ilctchcr I' ln Balls Nl btrout . , . . is Y . . . .
