I . 1 Cth .' - 21 THE WASHINGTON RECORD CHEERLEADERS It IS sometlmes found dlfficult 1n a large group to select Cheerleaders vuth out confuslon and w1thout makxnq It a lengthy process But we find that the type of selectlon by student body and faculty proves successful and IS a fa1r democratxc process A fevt of the quallflcatxons whlch we consldered necessary for selectlon of our Cheerleaders were a pleasnng personal ity leadershlp rhythm enthus1asm good sportsmansh1p scholastlc el1g1b1l1ty cour tesy and fa1rness Early IH November me held our tryouts Those w1sh1ng to try for th1s act1v1ty demonstrated the1r ab1l1ty on the Assem bly Hall stage IH v1ew of the student body and faculty After careful conslder atlon of the deslrable quallflcatlons of a Cheerleader the students and faculty cast the1r votes Th1S tryout resulted 1n the selectxon of the followmg as our Cheerleaders Clara Harmon Captam Mar1e Strout Sub Captaln ane Albee Betty Harmon Io Look Mary Look Au drey Ramsdell and Patr1c1a Vose We then got busy determlnlng our cos tumes dev1s1ng new cheers and pract1c1ng after school nxghts and whenever poss1 ble dur1ng Act1v1ty per1ods The perlod of tlme betvx een selectlon of cheerleaders and our first game vxas very short but vxe managed to f1nd old cos tumes to vtear 1nd to have 1 few new cheers ready IH 3ClCl1f1Ol1 to some of our old ones for the first g1me xx hxch vms 1 practlce game at Mxlbrndge Our first league game vtas vx1th M1 ch1as at our home court We vxere better prepared for th1s for we had our nevs costumes and more nevx cheers On Dec 16 vue had a barn dance at the IO O F Hall to help coxer the cost of our costumes Th1S proved both hnan cxally and soclally successful On an 2 we went to the County Cheer leaders Conference at WSNS Thms was the first Conference of th1s kmd vte have had and many useful ldeas were presented and problems discussed We feel that It was very vxorthvx h1le and that It helps to create a better understanding between the school cheerleaders We hope the conference may contmue and feel sure that It vxlll ard lmmensely Ill producmg better hlgh school cheer1ng We were able to make all the trlps w1th the team and had a very enloyable year of leadmg the fans 1n cheer1ng A cheerleaders we were able to make nevx acqualntances from surround1ng schools and to help create and ma1nta1n better sportsmanshlp between our schools We encountered qu1te a number of dxs appomtmg defeats but st1ll cheered on and d1d all 1n our povser to mamtaln a h1gh sp1r1t We have enyoyed cheer1ng for our team th1s year very much and vte hope that the basketball team and cheermq squad have a very successful year next year CLARA HARMON 50 , c , ' 'c Q E 1' - ' . BASILBALL year the baseball fever was blood, Even the first day there were people in the pouring rain storm. The game was tightly played by both teams considering the weather, but Calais Hnally beat us 7-6. Then came the game with Eastport, the boys were in high spirits over the prospects of beating Eastport, but again we were turned back, this time by a score of 8-Ll. The third game found us facing our arch rivals Machias. This was the game for which we had been waiting. Our team felt confident of a victory, but Ma- chias had a little too much power for us and we encountered another loss, 12-8. team 8-4. The following men made up the team, W. Colbeth, L. Ingalls, W. Gatcomb, R. Dennison, H. Dobbins, M. Dennison, E. Farnsworth, VV. Kinghorn, A. Ashley, with substitutes P. Iestings, L. Lund, and W. Sprague, VVe are looking forward to a better season in the spring.
