Knowledge seemed to be overflowing from the cavity above his shoulders and he stepped into big time operations with faltering steps and landed among the scholars at the Uni- versity of Southern California--of course, as to be said about most males, there was WiffAiiR! With a bang and a pop he started off his senior year as an advisor in the 'IWasIiburn Players and he says, With the aid of the DEVIL and a good cast the show has been pro- duced. He was speaking of UICI-IABOD SCAN DALS Washburns first musical comedy, which I think to his surprise and maybe to the surprise of several others, turned out to be the most gigantic, stu- pendous, triumphal show in the history of Washburn. iThat is the newspapers account of it.i Some say that it stunkl And so--into the pages of Washburn's history goes another nobody-whose ambition is to make a living without working. Yep, fhree weeks I'd been af Washburn when fhe Guard was mobilized, iusf geffing onfo fhe knack of frafernify and college life. How differenf if was in high school. You know? When you come fo fhink of if-why-I've grown up in fhe Army .... Yep, I will soon be fwenfy-five -oh, whaf fhe heck .... I was a good sfudenf. I was proud of being good af if. I wanfed wifh all my hearf fo be as good af if again. Buf fhaf is 'rhe one fhing I am nof sure abouf .... I shook fhe worry ouf of my mind and opened fhe door fo Dean SeIIen's office wifh eager impafience. In your direcTion, I said, crowding closer, genTIy Taking her by The arm, and guiding her onTo The bus. ' When seT+Ied in The bus I made sure, even wiTh The crowd and all The mix-up, ThaT I was siTTing wiTh The small, heavenly-shaped bruneTTe. She moved over sIighTIy To allow room Tor me, buT she did noT speak. The bus had already sTarTed when I asked, Been aT Washburn long? She leaned Toward me, and The long dark hair, which was pracTicaIIy sTraighT-buT Tor a couple oT shallow waves-gIoriTied her wiTh radianT beauTy as iT alluringly Tell Torward-on her lovely shoulders and neck. The Talling oT her shoulder-IengTh hair caused my aTTenTion To Tocus in ThaT direcTion, and, wiTh The look oT a beauTy appraiser oT vasT experience, undersTanding The value oT real beauTy, Traveled slowly To The high-heeled shoes ThaT encased her small TeeT. I wondered Tor a momenT if she were going To lean closer To me beTore she replied, because her near- ness was making me nervous, buT Then she said, JusT This semesTer. I could see, even in a siTTing posiTion, ThaT The young girl was unusually beauTiTuI. She wore a lovely plaid skirT, pulled iusT righT abouT her hips, and a high-necked sweaTer wiTh no necklace. I-Ier mouTh was noT Too Thin nor Too Thick, wiTh The righT amounT oT IipsTickq in TacT, iT was abouT The mosT perTecT I could ever remember seeing, and I ThoughT how wonderTuI her Iips would be To kiss-a long, slow, drawn-ouT kiss. WiTh a sly Turn OT her head, she asked, You Trom Topeka? No-OO-oooo, I sTammered. Q Looking direcTIy in my eyes, she said, Never liked Topeka myseIT-iT's Too unTriendly-Too much rush- ing around. Her lips TighTened TogeTher wiTh a smack as she Talked, wiTh an air oT esTablished preTerence, and I kepT siIen+. I like The counTry. ThaT's where I'm Trom. AbrupTIy she Turned, gazed ouT The window aT The billboard: Then, all oT a sudden, she whirled around To Tace me, as if she had TorgoTTen 'someThing, and said, My name is Shelby HerberT. Laughingly, she added: NOT any reIaTion oT VicTors. I smiled. Glad To know you. She nodded and I looked aT her more closely. She musT be 20-possibly a liTTIe younger-no less Than I'-7. 302 7,..l.,T. We-I-I, once in a while, I sTammered. ' She eyed me sharply. 'Some oT us young ones haven'T goT God in our hearTs, and ThaT's why There's wars! H I've never gone To church much, I admiTTed, hesiTanTly. I'm noT very religious. WhaT's your reIiqion? said The persisTenT voice of The beauTiTul bruneTTe. ATTer a pause, I said, half resenTTully, wondering whaT kind oT a creaTure This IiTTIe Kansas TarmereTTe was, ProTesTanT. I'm PresbyTerian, she said, raTher maTTer-of-TacTly. and a sTeady churchgoer. I don'T believe I've missed many services in my liTe. I go To church every Sunday, even during The week-someTimes. As she Talked, her large expressive eyes sTared aT me. I wouldn'T ToleraTe The ThoughT oT being like some of The young ones now-a-days. How some are going To Turn ouT, I haTe To Think. ATTer a lull, caused by her ouTbursT. I reached in my pockeT Tor a package oT cigareTTes and oTTered her one. Thanks, she said. Taking one. I've always believed ThaT when girls Took To drinking you never could Tell where They'd end up, buT I don'T Think smoking is bad. Looking aT her I saw her sTaring aT me, buT when I eyed her openly, she lowered her eyes quickly and Turned away. In The meanTime, she had sTarTed humming a church hymn in a high whining voice. I ThoughT, Wonder whaT'll come nexT. I kepT looking sTraighT ahead as I TelT her TooT move closer and pause as her knee Touched mine. ATTer a momenTary pressure, she moved her leg away and slid her lovely body closer, so ThaT her hip was pressing againsT mine. I looked aT her ouT oT The .corner oT my eye. Her eyes were shining brighTIy behind her horn- rimmed glasses. I shiTTed, uncomTorTabIe, when anybody was abouT To pass our seaT, buT she siIenTIy slipped her hand under my arm and resTed her fingers on my Thigh. I moved my hand over her whiTe Tingers and clasped Them Tigihhy, so ThaT her Trembling merged wiTh The Tingle in my own hand. I-Ier preTTily-shaped hands were weT as I Touched Them. As soon as people began moving back and TorTh in The bus, I released her hand quickly and moved my chesT and head away Trom her. BuT she kepT her hip glued To me. Did you ever sing in church? she asked wiTh a laugh. ' Rising, I said, Sorry, honey-I've already gone Too Tar.
