This year has seen Washburn correlating military tactics and meteorology with the pro- verbial three Rs. Washburn women have begun to match their steps with the ever-increasing line of University men and women who are dedicating their lives to the achievement of lasting freedom for America and her peoples. Each succeeding month has meant the end of college for the duration to a growing number of Washburn men. It has meant good-bye to families, friends and sweet- hearts. But with the supreme sacrifice already made by nine of our Washburn men, Ichabocls are marching to war with courage in their hearts, and on their lips, our university motto, Non Nobis Solum. 4 fa srl -fo 4' W, QV ' ff lp., ff 'av-:M f 'M 4 awp, .J1ff4'J,4fn4f f sdw' 4 ' r I .rv 'fs NY vujx S '3 ff Egwwffa-W xanga: W, . Dee has been coaching Washburn's athletes since l937. Bob Raugh, Head Football Coach, has been at Washburn since last fall. He obtained his masterfs degree in physical education from the University of Kansas last year, after spend- ing several years coaching high school teams. George Parker, Assistant Coach since 1940, is another Washburn alumnus., He is now in complete charge ot the gym classes. George Parker l For a season which from the standpoint of games won and lost was very sad indeed, the initial lchabod season for Coach Bob Raugh was really not at all catastrophic. The fine team of 1941 was thoroughly riddled by graduation and calls to the armed services, and the freshman-dominated combination which Raugh developed was adequate credit to his coaching ability. The opening games brought to light a tenacious lch- abod line and a hard-fighting sextet of backs operat- ing from Raugh's quick-opening short punt formation, but until the homecoming game the development of the admittedly green team was not complete. With that game, a 21-13 victory over Fort Hays Teachers, the Washburn boys caught the spirit of being a potent organization and went on to play fine football through the remaining games. The finest showing of the year was the 13-0 loss to the highly-touted Fort Riley mili- tary team. The lchabods played marvelously, limiting the army to two very difficult tallies and themselves threatening constantly to score. The 1942 eleven depended even more on stellar Ed Bolduc than had the teams of the two previous years. Bolduc, who in his first year won a place on the na- tionally recognized Little All-America squad, was con- tinually the backbone of the team, fighting enemy at- tacks like a Marine from his defensive fullback spot. Kansas sportswriters called him the best center in the state, and opponents concurred unanimously. Gene Lane and Augie Bohm manned the wings most of the season. Tackles converted to ends for-the pur- pose of strengthening the forward wall, both turned in line performances week after week. Their able re- serves were Dick Rock, husky Oklahoman, who was a state wrestling champion in high school, and Charley Cleveland. Both developed rapidly into capable wing- men. The impenetrable center of the lchabod line was manned all year by Paul Kvasnicka and Ben Eddy, both of whom-with Bolduc-won the Review's nomination for Little All-America honors. Both played rugged ball in every game, and their play undoubt- edly constituted a major part of the inspiration which finally made a scoring attack possible. Paul Thompson quarterbacked well and did the blocking in the backiield, and Ed Hailey filled the fullback slot most of the time with the strength and coolness of a coming star. l The backfield iind of the season was little Keith Baird, who in the Hays and Riley games provided the spark which led Washburn to the best performances of the year. Running and passing brilliantly, he con- verted a bunch of good football players into a touch- down-hungry aggregation. Credit for the scoring com- bination goes almost entirely to Baird. A severe carti- lage injury on the last play of the Riley game put him on crutches for more than a month, and his loss caused a definite let-down in lchabod morale in the final game with Southwestern. Ed Schneider and Charley Short were mainstays at tackle. Their consistently good play, though not spec- tacular, drew praise from critics regularly. Abie Wallace, between broken noses, did the ball handling in the backfield. He ran well from his num- ber two position, and made several fine returns of opponents' punts. His runback of a St. Benedicts punt for some sixty yards provided Washburn's first score. of the season. Regular backfield reserves were lack Adams, Bob Crites, Harold Butterfield, George Figgs, Ralph Brown, and Houston Hogue. They saw regular action and provided some sad moments for enemy linemen. Hgmgr mwdn, Coach Dee Errickson started the 1942-43 basketball season with a promising starting five in lim Tyree, Corky Ullom, George Beverly, Ed Bolduc and Homer Rhodes. Ed Hailey, Clare Howe, Gene Lane, Eddie Wallace, Ferd Slatten, Harold Hunter, Dana I-lolstrom and Bill' Gough were soon to share much oi the responsibility of the bas- ketball season. Iim Tyree was forced to quit the game because of a knee injury. Corky Ullom soon followed with a broken finger. Clare Howe and Ed Bolduc were ineligible at mid-semester. The outstanding victory of the season was the 40-32 defeat handed Kansas State before the local crowd. The Washburn quintet gave the home fans another thrill in the last home game of the season against Wichita when they triumphed 40 to 38 in a see-saw battle to the last minute. I 'I The necessity of a constant change in the starting line- up, added to the fact that Beverly and Rhodes were the only ones of the original starting five that played nearly all of the games, was responsible for our six victories out of the twenty-two games played. Southwestern was the champion in the Central Conference while Washburn fin- ished last. The student body was enthusiastic and appreciated the basketball team. Although this year's record is not out- standing in mere statistics, it represents many thrilling and exciting moments for the spectators.
